    7. Cleaning the bathClean regularly to prevent a build up of soap scum thatcan be difficult to shift not to mention the bacteria thatcan thrive in the moist conditions.

    8. IroningIroning the washing in one sweep saves time in themornings when you are rushing around before theschool run or work. Use scented water for addedfreshness.

    9. Sort recyclingAn easy way to sort the recycling is to havetwo bins, that way you can sort as you go.

    10. VacuumingPut on your favourite music and get going. If you feel that you dont have time toclean the house and go to the gym, whynot combine the two - 30 minutes ofvacuuming burns 100 calories!

Jobs you love to hateSome cleaning tasks are more unpopular than others but thereare some helpful tips that take the pain out of the process.

    1. Cleaning the toiletAlways keep a bottle of toilet cleaner by the toilet so itcan be used regularly and by anyone.

    2. Cleaning the ovenAlways place items on a tray or tin foil to avoid spillagesin the first place. If you leave your oven too longbetween cleaning, food will be burnt on and harder toclean so regular cleaning is best.

    3. Cleaning the binUse strong bin bags that are unlikely to rip to ensuresmelly liquids and food debris dont leak and fester inthe bottom. If your bin smells, take it outside, fill withcold water and add 1 sterilising tablet per 5 litres ofwater, and leave for 15 minutes. This will kill allbacteria and fungi that will be causing the smell.

    4. Cleaning the drainsIf they are blocked, call in the professionals. To preventthis from happening, pour a cupful of bicarbonate ofsoda down the drains or sinks once a week, and thenpour a little warm water down very gradually. Leavefor an hour or so and then flush through.

    5. Cleaning windowsFor an economic but sparkly clean finish, dilute vinegarwith water (1:4) and use a cloth to wipe off the grime.Screw up some newspaper to buff the windows. Externalwindows will need washing up liquid, a sponge and elbowgrease or cheat and call in a window cleaner.

    6. Washing upWhen it comes to washing up, it is easier to do it as soonas you can to avoid stubborn, dried on leftovers that willtake twice as long to clean. It is also more hygienic asbacteria on food will multiply.

Removing candle wax from a carpet

Firstly fill a plastic bag with ice cubes and hold it over thewaxy area until it goes really brittle. You should then be ableto pick off the wax. If this doesnt work, try the oppositeby placing kitchen paper over the area and then going overwith an iron on a medium setting. The wax should stick tothe paper.

    Stained cups

Tea and coffee stains in mugs and cups make them lookpermanently dirty. Stained cups and beakers can be soakedin a solution of Milton until the stain has disappeared. It isbest to wash melamine cups as soon as possible after use toavoid stains as these can be tougher to remove.

    Chopping boards

Pungent foods like onion and garlic can leave behindsmells on chopping boards. After washing them inwarm soapy water, rinse and then wipe over Milton

Sterilising Fluid diluted with water (45ml (3 halfcaps) to 2.5 litres of water). This will alsodestroy any germs left lurking in the boards

that are causing the smell and give youpeace of mind that the boards are

    really clean!

    Fridges and freezers

Germs certainly thrive better in warm conditions but theycan survive perfectly well in the cold, and even freezing

doesnt kill all germs. Its important to kill germs in yourfridge to prevent contamination of food. To kill germs andstop mould developing, wipe the fridge and freezer insideand out with a solution of Milton (dilute 3 half caps in2.5 litres of water). Dont forget the shelves and storagecontainers. Do the fridge on a weekly basis and the freezereach time you defrost it.

    Pet bedding and towels

Germs can thrive on pet bedding causing a health hazard notto mention a smell around your home! Make sure you washtowels and bedding regularly either at a high temperatureor better still add Milton Antibacterial Fabric Solution intothe wash. It will kil l any bacteria and fungi lurking that couldspread infection or cause odours.

AskAggie...Domestic Goddess Aggie MacKenzie knows a thingor two about cleaning sticky situations. Here areher top tips for cleaning around the home.

    Washing machines

Mould appears in washing machines due to the damp, particularlyin the drawer. Dont use bleach as it is too harsh and could damage

rubber parts inside the machine. Remove the drawer and useMilton Sterilising Fluid dil uted with water. Scrub with anylon brush and leave to soak in the sterilising solutionfor a few minutes. Wipe around drawer area andinside of the washing machine with the sterilisingsolution and then put on an empty wash to rinse.

    Brassware

You can actually raid your kitchen cupboardsto find some good brass cleaners. Try mixinglemon juice and salt into a paste and rubbing onthe brass gently to remove dirt. Be sure to rinseit well and then buff to a shine with a soft cloth.Tomato ketchup also works well!
