In reviewing this edition of Miller Matters I think we would all agree that our school is an amazing place for students to learn. What our teachers here manage to accomplish is truly re-markable. I invite you not only to share your gratitude directly with the teachers and staff throughout the year; but also, when you experience a staff member doing something special that truly impacts your child or family positively, please email me personal-ly; these messages brighten my day, and I would love to share them with teachers and staff. As you will have seen in the media the COVID-19 situation contin-ues to evolve, and I thought it is important that I bring you up-to-date with NSW Ministry of Health advice. Consistent with current guidelines, children, students and staff who are unwell with respiratory illness should remain at home until symptoms resolve. In accordance with our current practice if any student becomes unwell with COVID-19, infection control guidelines will be implemented and the Department will follow the advice provided by the NSW Ministry of Health as appropri-ate. At this time there has been no impact on school operations, in-cluding excursions, and I will continue to keep the school commu-nity up-to-date on this matter. For further NSW Ministry of Health advice, please refer to the attachment and should you have any questions, please contact the school office. Dr Ken Edge—Principal

WELLBEING AT MTHS
Wellbeing is everyone’s business, and at Miller Technology High
School we genuinely believe that. Our Wellbeing team is busy each
morning greeting everyone with a smile and feeding the school with
warm toast to make sure that we are all ready for the busy school
day. But, that’s not all we do. The wellbeing team is always busy,
working behind the scenes to make sure that students are as cared
for as possible. Some of the wonderful things we have been doing
include our year 6-7 transition program. This is where our transition
team visited each of our primary schools and presented a number of
exciting taster lessons to students. Orientation day was also held in
December where we met many of our new year 7 parents, and had
the opportunity to learn more about them. We also had a chance to
show some of the awesome work we do at MTHS.
Our recent Year 7 Project Based Learning program is another great
example of the way Wellbeing works with the rest of the school. This
was made easier by the information we gained about our students
and parents from our transition program. Everyone worked really
hard to make sure that our parent showcase ran smoothly. Thank you
to everyone who participated and made it an awesome day.
This year, we were lucky enough to have gained another awesome
counsellor! Meet Emily! Emily has lots of experience working with
students and is always super friendly and approachable. Emily, along
with the other counsellors, plays an important role in our school. She
is a member of our learning and support team, and supports stu-
dents’ mental health and wellbeing.
t’s it from us for now. Remember to keep smiling and being the best
version of yourself that you can be! Ms H Trad
YEAR 12 PHYSICS—KICKSTART WORKSHOP JEWISH MUSEUM EXCURSION
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES FOR
OR ATSI STUDENTS
Year 12 Physics attended a Kickstart workshop run by Univer-
sity of Sydney on Wednesday the 4th March 2020. It was run
by a University Student who had just finished his Masters on
Particle Physics. The students had a great time learning about
the different fields in physics and how they all interact with
each other. After a rainy morning getting a little wet, the stu-
dents had an amazing time working with University equip-
ment and understanding how the universe works. A big thank
you to University of Sydney, Mrs Vlahos and Miss Alessi for
giving these students the opportunity to explore the wonder-
ful world of Physics.
Ms B Alessi
On Wednesday March 4th, 28 MTHS Year 11 Modern History
students, along with Mr Nugent, Ms Pollard and Mr Charlier,
travelled to the Sydney Jewish Museum. The excursion forms a
key part of our investigation of the Holocaust and the construc-
tion of history.
On arriving at the Museum, the students were guided through a
range of exhibits on the historical context, events and aftermath
of the Holocaust. The students were able to personally examine
artefacts and accounts, connecting their ideas from academic
investigation to the realities of the Museum’s collection.
Subsequently, the students had the opportunity to listen and
speak to Susan Warhaftig, a survivor of the Holocaust. Susan’s
refugee experience was similar to that of many Miller students,
families and members of the community. Our students had a
wide-ranging discussion with Susan, asking thoughtful and re-
spectful questions.
During this discussion and the following workshop, the Miller
students continued to represent the highest ideals of the school.
Their behaviour, demeanour and positivity were all highly im-
pressive. They discussed a difficult and challenging part of history
with nuance, specificity and sensitivity.
These 28 young people are not only diligent students, but also
exceptional ambassadors for our school. Their excellence was
reflected in the following feedback from the Sydney Jewish Mu-
seum staff to Dr Edge:
“The students were totally engaged, showing a maturity and
wisdom unusual for students of their age and able to empathise
with the Jewish experience and with each other.
Dr Edge, congratulations. You and your staff are doing wonderful
work with these new young Australians. They were a credit to
themselves, your school and their families.”
We are proud to have the opportunity to work every day with
such inspirational young people .
Mr C Charlier Just wanted to touch base regarding another Scholarship opportunity for year 10 students. Do you know how many Indigenous students you have in year 10 at Miller for 2020? If you are able to pass along this info, I would love to speak to you further about a Scholarship Program we run with Op-tus that could benefit these students. This program offers workshops out at Optus Headquarters in Macquarie Park where students will also have their own mentor for the program. The workshops cover topics such as the following: •Cyber Safety •Interview to Impress •Building Your Personal Brand •Pathways to Employment This program also offers financial assistance of $500 to go towards the students schooling. Applying for ADFA is a competitive, dual application process that can take up to 12 months. It's preferable you apply in Year 11, but you can still apply in Year 12.
