Welcome to Collingwood Art on the Street, year 7! We are delighted to showcase the creativity, talent and diversity

of our arts community through this popular program.

This year’s theme “Collingwood Celebrates Canada” inspired entries related to our community, culture, people and natural surroundings. More than 125 submissions were received and this year 70 artists are featured, almost a third of which are students or emerging artists.

The result is an incredible array of artwork on banners and chairs forming an outdoor art gallery of contemporary and traditional works that enhance our community from Victoria Day to Thanksgiving weekend.

Also on display are four sesquicentennial panels with artwork and timelines on the history of Collingwood, five murals that represent the heritage of our community and three new murals at “Walk the 400” gallery, a temporary gallery along our waterfront promenade. In August and September, “Keys to Collingwood” festival will add pre-loved pianos to the streets and everyone is invited to take a seat and play a tune!

We hope you will enjoy Collingwood Art on the Street and take some time to explore one of Ontario’s most charming historic harbourfront towns on Georgian Bay rich with award-winning restaurants and cafés, trendy boutiques, live music and art galleries.

Collingwood Art on the Street is a community effort and we’d like to thank Collingwood Collegiate Institute Woodworking for assembling the chairs and CCI Visual Arts for coordinating so many student entries.

3 5Five heritage murals were commissioned between 1999 and 2001 featuring culture, people and events from our community’s past. In 2016, three new murals were mounted at Walk the 400 Gallery, a temporary art installation at the waterfront promenade. The murals are maintained by the Town’s Public Art Program. HEADING DOCKSIDE By Beverley Smith, 2000Huron Street and Ste Marie StreetA painting honouring the shipbuilding industry which was the lifeline of Collingwood for 100 years. The workers, many of whom spent their lifetime at the shipyard, are depicted heading to work.

SKI TRAINBy Richard Gill, 200186 Hurontario StreetIndividually sculpted and kiln-fired clay pieces depict the 1950’s “ski train” arriving at the Craigleith Station baring passengers bound for the ski hills.

PUBLIC ART MURALS

Hurontario Street and Side Launch WayWalk the 400 Gallery is named after a road within the Collingwood Shipyards that was once nicknamed ‘The 400’ to describe the daily flow of workers and shipbuilding materials that travelled its length. ‘The 400’ ran parallel to today’s Promenade, directly beneath the Yard’s cranes that were located approximately 100 feet west of the water’s edge. The gallery space is provided by FRAM.
