Nigeria Emerges
Nigeria is one of the world’s fastest growing
emerging markets and it has achieved significant
growth in recent years. This is in part due to rising
oil prices and the restructuring of the economy
which is expected to grow by 10% in 2011 as the
government builds new infrastructure and
privatises the energy sector.
In 2010 the country was ranked 31st in the world in
terms of GDP and its manufacturing sector is the
second-largest on the African continent. It is the
largest economy in the West Africa region, 3rd
largest in Africa (behind South Africa and Egypt)
and is on track to becoming one of the top 30
economies in the world in 2011.
Nigeria produces about 3.3% of the world's oil
supply and is ranked 12th in production at 3
million barrels per day and the industry accounts
for almost 80% of GDP and above 90% of total
exports. Rising oil prices have benefitted the
Nigerian economy whilst the Financial Services,
Telecoms and Construction sectors have also
grown significantly. Significant gas deposits are also
now being exploited and are expected to be a major
revenue source during the new decade.
A Changing World
The world is changing at an ever increasing
pace and Emerging Markets have been thrust
to the forefront of the world economy as their
large populations and abundant natural
resources have generated significant wealth.
In contrast, since 2007 the mature economies
of the West have been weighed down by high
levels of personal and public debt and
economic growth has slowed down
significantly. Nigeria now faces the challenge
of maximising the potential of its natural
resources and developing the necessary
infrastructure to allow it to become a leading
economic power.
