(The United Methodist Church today continues to take a strong stand against alcohol abuse.) Some asked whether the church was contributing to the problem of alcohol addiction by serving fermented Communion wine. In response, Thomas Welch, a Methodist in New York, developed a method of pasteurization that would keep grapes from fermenting and that allowed him to make non-alcoholic wine. Welch called the drink, ‘Methodist Unfermented Communion Wine.’ It later would be known as Welch’s Grape Juice.” Having shared that with them seemed to be a natural time to share my thoughts on alcohol. I have never said, and would never say, drinking alcohol is a sin. I can’t say what the Bible does not say. The Bible cautions against the abuse of alcohol. I choose not to drink for several reasons. I am an old school United Methodist pastor and it used to be forbidden. Of course, one old Book of Discipline required pastors to sleep in long pajamas. I grew up in a home where alcohol was not present and yet had family members who died of alcoholism that were dear to me. I watched at an early age the dangerous possibilities of alcohol use and decided to avoid them. As a pastor I have seen parents struggle with their children’s addictions while the parents did not seem to understand that children watch adults and then imitate adult behaviors. As a pastor I served a com- munity that had a 4 year old child killed by a drunk driver who attended my church. I did not want my chil- dren to follow a bad example that I taught them. Peer pressure is enough. I used to not allow drinking at church functions at churches I served. I grieve my shrinking to socie- tal norms. Social occasions in the world ought to be different than our witness in the church. I struggle with hypocritical behavior. We don’t allow alcohol on church grounds but do at church functions? I am proud of our AA presence and yet we cannot invite these recovering addicts to some of our church social gatherings. The community of faith should to be a place where people can gather without risking relapse. God help us to be different than the world. Across the Pastor’s Desk

I am being blessed this year to teach our confirmation class along with Sean and Allison. It is a

wonderful engaged group that I am enjoying. This past Sunday night we studied the sacraments. I shared

with them the following anecdote from our Credo confirmation teaching manual about why we use grape

juice:

“During the nineteenth century, Methodists became very concerned about the dangers of alcohol.

(The United Methodist Church today continues to take a strong stand against alcohol abuse.) Some

asked whether the church was contributing to the problem of alcohol addiction by serving fermented

Communion wine. In response, Thomas Welch, a Methodist in New York, developed a method of

pasteurization that would keep grapes from fermenting and that allowed him to make non-alcoholic

wine. Welch called the drink, ‘Methodist Unfermented Communion Wine.’ It later would be known

as Welch’s Grape Juice.”

Having shared that with them seemed to be a natural time to share my thoughts on alcohol.

I have never said, and would never say, drinking alcohol is a sin. I can’t say what the Bible does not

say. The Bible cautions against the abuse of alcohol. I choose not to drink for several reasons. I am an old

school United Methodist pastor and it used to be forbidden. Of course, one old Book of Discipline required

pastors to sleep in long pajamas. I grew up in a home where alcohol was not present and yet had family

members who died of alcoholism that were dear to me. I watched at an early age the dangerous possibilities

of alcohol use and decided to avoid them.

As a pastor I have seen parents struggle with their children’s addictions while the parents did not

seem to understand that children watch adults and then imitate adult behaviors. As a pastor I served a com-

munity that had a 4 year old child killed by a drunk driver who attended my church. I did not want my chil-

dren to follow a bad example that I taught them. Peer pressure is enough.

I used to not allow drinking at church functions at churches I served. I grieve my shrinking to socie-

tal norms. Social occasions in the world ought to be different than our witness in the church. I struggle with

hypocritical behavior. We don’t allow alcohol on church grounds but do at church functions? I am proud of

our AA presence and yet we cannot invite these recovering addicts to some of our church social gatherings.

The community of faith should to be a place where people can gather without risking relapse.

God help us to be different than the world.

From the Counselor’s Desk Happy Valentine’s Day! Yes, I know that I am a few

days early but why not celebrate a few days early...the

roses may be a little less expensive. I really like the idea

that there is a national holiday dedicated to telling people

closest to us that we love them. The relationship theorists

tell us that this is an important principle in keeping the

emotional excitement in our long-term commitments

alive. Love is not just a feeling, but also intentional ac-

tions on the days that we don’t feel like it helps to keep

our relationships healthy. Meaningful touch daily (a hug,

hand holding, or a pat on the back) is just one way that

we can tell the most important people in our lives that

they are special. So....learn the love language of your

spouse/significant other, child, and/or pet and speak it!

Follow the way of love...I Corinthians 14:1 (NIV)

Pressure: A burdensome, distressing, or weighty condition. Are you feeling pressure right now? Is it affecting your health, your attitude, or your relationships

with your family and friends? Would you like to have someone to talk to, just to help you get through the next month or two? Our Stephen Ministers can help. Call Shirley Wiley, Referral Coordinator, at 478-234-0195, for more informa-tion.

The Missions Committee will hold its first meeting on Sunday, Feb. 9th, at 12:30 PM in the church conference room. Anyone interested is welcome to attend. If you're interested in joining the commit-tee, please contact Ed Moore at 478-454-4031.

Fifties Plus Our next meeting will be February 10th. Angie D. Mar-tin will present the program on The Red Bird Mission, to show a way to volunteer. The program will be WE LOVE OUR VOLUNTEERS, AND WE LOVE TO VOL-UNTEER. I hope to recognize the many ways people in our group volunteer.
