Mill ValleyFall Arts Festival

I’d like to invite and welcome you to the 54th annual Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival in beautiful historic Old Mill Park. Catch the new and comfortable free shuttles

to the park where you’ll view over 135 booths of fine arts and crafts and enjoy live entertainment as you leisurely stroll

through the beautiful redwood grove. We definitely have one of the loveliest natural settings for our festival. As a nonprofit community arts organization, we are very proud

to announce our new Emerging Artists Awards Program. Two dedicated high school students were awarded cash prizes this year to help further their creative studies. (See more on page 7). We plan to make this program an integral and annual part of our community outreach. Your participation in the festival helps make this and other programs a reality.

The Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival has always been a wonderful community event. With the help of our many volunteers, we hope that it will continue to delight for years to come.

Gather together with your friends and neighbors and enjoy Art in the Park at one of Mill Valley’s favorite traditions, the Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival.

hroughout the past 40 years, I have enjoyed producing and directing hundreds of fairs, festivals and special

events throughout Marin, the Bay Area and the country. My life’s passion has been developing significant community events. I am a Mill Valley native and a true believer in the need for and value of events that spring from the heart of a community.

I am very proud of my involvement with the Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival. It is a magical combination of the right stuff to offer a truly wonderful and engaging experience for all who participate and attend.

The Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival is perhaps the oldest arts festival in the western United States. Started in 1957, The Mill Valley Fall Festival was created as a celebration of Mill Valley’s unique artistic and engaged values. Fifty-four years later we are all still guided and challenged by that heritage.

Our Festival attracts over 130 fine artists, many local and some from as far as Hawaii and New York. Our Festival is rated one of the top 10 fine arts and craft shows in the Northwest. It attracts thousands of art lovers and buyers from all over the Bay Area. Our Festival provides exposure and a livelihood for the many fine artists and craftspeople who display and offer their works for sale.

Our Festival showcases our wealth of local entertainers, many of national stature.

It provides them important exposure and the opportunity to perform for old and new friends on their home turf.

Our Festival helps support the community art projects in the public schools and provides important promotion and fundraising opportunities for our local nonprofit organizations.

Our volunteer committee of local artists, involved residents and Board of Directors design, plan and produce the Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival. This structure is unique in this world of homogenized and bland “Any City” Art & Wine Festivals. These dedicated volunteers generously give of their time to design and produce our Festival. They have brought the Bay Area a spectacular event for over 53 years. Our Festival this year is the direct result of their efforts and continues to be a source of pride for all of us and the community of Mill Valley.

he first Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival Emerging Artist Scholarship was awarded to Kevin Templeton at the Tamalpais High

School senior awards night June 1st in Ruby Scott Gym. Lynne Klein, president of the Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival and Tamalpais High fine arts teacher, presented the award. Kevin, who has a 4.0-plus GPA, will be attending New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University this fall. The $500 award will go toward Templeton’s freshman college art supplies.

Kevin was both shocked and honored to be the first recipient of the Emerging Artist Award. “I would like to thank the Tam Ceramics Program that made receiving such an award possible. I’d also like to thank my parents and teachers for encouraging me to apply and, of course, the Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival selection committee for choosing me.”

Kevin started working in clay his freshman year at Tam and found that both his passion and aptitude for the medium soared. He has studied ceramics each year and attended a College of Marin summer course. He has a reputation in the art department as a “master thrower” for his ability to throw large quantities of clay into a variety of classical and expressive forms. Kevin says he wants to focus on functional as well as artistic pieces. He loves to make teapots since they are both aesthetic and functional.

Festival in Old Mill Park as part of Tam High’s student exhibit. The Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival committee is very excited to implement this scholarship

program and plans to continue the awards every year to one senior and one junior who excel in the arts. The junior selected this year is Evelyn Buzbee. She will receive her award at the Festival. Students interested in being considered for the award are required to fill out an application and submit samples of their work to be juried.

The MVFAF will award two outstanding high school students in the arts each year.

Trying something differentor many years the Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival image committee has selected one piece of art from a

different artist each year to adorn the event’s poster. Since many artists with many different styles of work exhibit at the festival, the committee decided this year to commission a poster image that would represent and promote the festival itself – an image that was bright, fun, artsy and eye-catching.

Michael Osborne of Michael Osborne Design of San Francisco answered the call and donated his time and talents creating this year’s poster. He created a design that in fact did just what the committee was looking for,

an image that is festive, fun and grabs the viewer’s attention.Mr. Osborne started with the concept of hands, every artist’s basic tool. He traced the

hands of all the workers in his office and chose one. He copied and rotated the hand until the concept came forward; a rainbow heptagon puff ball, a paint-ball flower of creativity. The festival committee wants to thank Michael for his generous donation to the 54th Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival. See him in booth #78. We’d also like to thank Mohawk Paper Co. for the paper donation, in combination with Woods Lithographics’ amazing printing capabilities.

Michael Osborne is president and creative director of the San Francisco-based graphic design firm MOD/Michael Osborne Design, Inc., established in 1981. For more information, visit www.modsf.com.

EHRET CHIROPRACTIC Spirit, mind and body integration

MY APPROACH TO HEALTH CARE

Whenever we are overwhelmed our body goes into a defensive posture

to protect itself. When the situation passes ideally we come back to

neutral but often we get stuck in that posture. The tension stored in the

body is like a memory of the experience and as long as it remains we keep

reacting as if that moment is still happening.

The way we maintain a state of ease is by responding appropriately to

what is. What is—is the present moment. Responding to anything else

produces a relative state of disease.

Chiropractic adjustments help release the tension that binds our

consciousness to the past, erasing the memory and allowing our

consciousness to return to the present moment.

Periodic chiropractic adjustments can help keep body tension to a

minimum, consciousness present, and facilitate maintaining a state of ease.
