Oct. 5, 2010 By Julia Sellers, South Carolina Bureau Chief, The Augusta Chronicle

AIKEN --- Willie James Harley was the first friend Kenith Corley met when he moved toAiken at age 6.

Just across the road from each other on the north side of Aiken, the two grew up withdreams of playing college football. Their only major disagreement was about fishing.Harley wasn't an angler, said Corley.

"Willie is a little older than I am, but I was the more sensible one and like the bigbrother," he said.

It was trust, and knowing they had each other's back, that kept them friends for 42 years.

On Friday, Corley received the devastating news that his lifelong pal had been killed inAfghanistan by an improvised explosive device.

Harley, a 48-year-old staff sergeant, was with the National Guard's 1221st EngineeringCompany based in Graniteville and Batesburg. Spc. Luther Rabon, 32, of LexingtonCounty, S.C., was also killed in the attack, according to Col. Peter J. Brooks, aspokesman for the South Carolina National Guard. Their company of about 100 mendeployed in July.

Corley was attending their alma mater Aiken High's football game in Florence when hereceived the news from Harley's daughter and sister.

Harley's son, Christopher, who is also serving with the company, confirmed it beforemilitary personnel even contacted the family, said Corley.

"We just said it has to be true because Chris is over there with him," he said. "At first wewere all shocked with it and it's taken a little while for it to sink in that this reallyhappened, but I think the family's doing quite well."

Throughout high school, the boys -- both defensive tackles -- battled it out to see whowould take on William "The Refrigerator" Perry, said Corley. They wanted to be thebest, and that meant going up against the best.

After high school, the two went to work at Graniteville Mills. Still wanting to chase thedream of college ball, the men quit after a year to condition for tryouts as walk-ons forDivision II schools.

"We knew that (working at the mill) wasn't what we were supposed to do. But tryouts, man, that was the worst," said Corley. "We weren't ready. We didn't have it."

Corley packed up for Presbyterian College in the Upstate before transferring back toAiken Technical College. Harley decided to join the Army Reserve instead of returningto the mill.

Harley kept his football dreams alive by coaching East Aiken Elementary's squad andsharing the game with his own boys.

“The Laws Passed By Democrats AndRepublicans Alike Helped Their Wealthy

Friends Pay Much Lower Taxes, Lower InPercent Than Anything Since Income

Taxes Began”

September 13 - 27, 2010 Spark Newspaper

We can measure it statistically: in 1979, the wealthiest one per cent of the population got10% of all the income in this country.

By 2007, 24% – almost one quarter of the country’s income was grabbed by this sametiny part of the population, the capitalist class and their close allies.

This is the picture of the increased exploitation of those who do the actual work.

We can measure it by the deterioration in our everyday lives: by the loss of value in ourhouses – or even the loss of our homes; by the reduction in what we have to spend onschool clothes for our kids this year; by the vacations we didn’t take; by the fact ourelders’ income has them scraping at the end of every month.

If this is not bad enough, tax law changes over the past 30 years have screwed us too.The laws passed by Democrats and Republicans alike helped their wealthy friends paymuch lower taxes, lower in percent than anything since income taxes began.

The top one per cent, these few households, has saved on average $300,000 per year

in federal taxes on income.

If we want to know why our pockets feel pinched, these tax and income policies are thereason.

If we wonder what happened to all the billions of dollars needed for education or healthcare, it went to the wealthy.

Let them collect the money needed to run the society from those who have too much! That debt is way overdue.

September 28, 2007 By PAUL D’AMATO, Socialist Worker [Excerpts]

RUSSIA WAS the first and only country to achieve a socialist revolution--that is, asociety in which ordinary people had their hands on the levers of power.

For that reason alone, the capitalist rulers of the world cannot allow it to stand on its ownmerits. The later degeneration of the revolution into bureaucratic, one-party totalitarianrule must be read back into the past to “prove” that the revolution was doomed to fail.

This is the purpose of the hundreds of studies published by Russia “experts” that portrayLenin and the Bolshevik Party as ruthless, nasty and authoritarian. The revolution, inmost accounts, did not involve the masses in determining their own destiny, but was thework of individuals bent on exploiting mass discontent for their own purposes.

This framework serves two purposes: to elevate the role of individuals in the making ofhistory, and simultaneously to denigrate the role of ordinary workers, who are seen asnaïve dupes.

Lenin is portrayed as a superhuman madman, bent on one-man dictatorship--andpossessing an irresistible will to power. Historian Robert Payne, for example, writesabsurdly of Lenin, “His fanatical will was like a lever which attempted to throw the wholeglobe into an orbit more to his liking; and because he pressed so hard on the lever, theearth still shudders.”

The reality is that the Bolshevik Party became a mass party in the course of therevolution, winning the allegiance of the most militant workers. Far from being Lenin’s

8/8/2019 Military Resistance 8J10 Welcome to Obamaworld[1]

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/military-resistance-8j10-welcome-to-obamaworld1 16/29

cat’s paw, the Bolsheviks were a party alive with debate and disagreement, with differentfactions fighting over the revolution’s course.

Lenin was certainly the most respected leader in the party, but it was a respect earnedby his role as a theoretician and practical leader, not by hypnosis or fiat. Indeed, Leninoften found himself in the minority and had to fight hard for his positions. Moreover, in a

number of cases, Lenin’s views, particularly on tactical questions, were wrong, and wererejected or adjusted by the party.

When Lenin returned to Russia in April, his views--transfer all power to the Soviets--wereconsidered by other Bolsheviks to be completely out of touch and even anarchist. It tookhim some weeks of hard argument to win over the party.

Lenin also had to fight tooth and nail to convince the party of the necessity of preparingfor an insurrection once the Bolsheviks had won over a majority in the Moscow andPetrograd soviets.

On the other hand, Lenin proved to be wrong after the July Days when he argued that

the soviets were now bankrupt institutions. The party, though it officially voted toabandon the slogan “All power to the soviets,” never really abandoned it at the local leveland soon restored it.

Lenin was also wrong in his views that the insurrection might begin in Moscow--Petrograd was clearly the leading revolutionary citadel in Russia--and in his insistencethat the insurrection should be organized through the Bolshevik Party, independently ofthe soviets. Other leaders, such as Leon Trotsky, were able to set a better course onthese questions.

*********************************************

THE ARGUMENT that the Bolsheviks “hijacked” the revolution fails to take into accountthat the Bolsheviks were only one political party among many competing for the supportof the Russian people.

The fact that the Bolsheviks were able to win mass support away from the SocialRevolutionaries and Mensheviks flowed not from their superior persuasive powers orability to command blind obedience, but because of their program.

They were the only party that demanded land to the peasants, factories to theworkers, all power to the soviets [elected workers’ councils] and an end to thewar.

“All other major political groups,” writes historian Alexander Rabinowitch, “lostcredibility because of their association with the government and their insistenceon patient sacrifice in the interests of the war effort.”

In short, whereas the other parties acted as a brake on the revolution, the Bolshevikswanted to see it through to the end.

8/8/2019 Military Resistance 8J10 Welcome to Obamaworld[1]

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/military-resistance-8j10-welcome-to-obamaworld1 17/29

At the same time, the party was not for some kind of minority putsch against theProvisional Government led by Kerensky. Lenin and other party leaders worked torestrain the movement when they felt that a premature revolt threatened the movementas a whole with defeat.

It must be remembered that Lenin’s position was that the party must “patiently explain”

their demands and win over the majority of the working class before it could movetoward decisive action against the Provisional Government.

Lenin’s bold and determined leadership, as well as the Bolsheviks’ relative unity anddiscipline compared to other political parties, were key factors in the revolution’ssuccess.

But this unity and discipline was not bureaucratic--it was organic and political. The partydebated and voted on all key questions, and local organizations of the party possesseda great deal of leeway to carry on their own independent initiatives.

Rabinowitch attributes much of the Bolsheviks’ success in transforming themselves from

a party of 25,000 on the eve of the February Revolution into a mass party capable ofleading a successful struggle for power with a membership of a quarter million to “theparty’s internally relatively democratic, tolerant and decentralized structure and methodof operation, as well as its essentially open and mass character.”

The conspiratorial, clandestine forms of organization of the Bolsheviks that preceded therevolutionary period were imposed by necessity on all illegal parties as a result of therepressive conditions of Tsarism. The Bolsheviks were always prepared, whenconditions changed, to move toward open, democratic methods of organization.

This little fact is practically ignored by most historians.

The dreaded “democratic centralism” of the Bolshevik Party was exactly what the termimplies: the fullest and freest debate, combined with strict adherence to decisions oncemade. This is what gave the party its ability to “read” what was happening in thedisparate sectors of struggle, generalize from that experience and offer guidance to it.

Democracy without centralism is a talk shop. Centralism without democracy createsbureaucratism and isolates the leaders from the ranks.

As Trotsky later wrote:

“How could a genuinely revolutionary organization, setting itself the task of overthrowingthe world and uniting under its banner the most audacious iconoclasts, fighters and

insurgents, live and develop without intellectual conflicts, without groups and temporaryfaction formations?...

“The Central Committee relied upon this seething democratic support. From this, itderived the audacity to make decision and give orders. The obvious correctness of theleadership at all critical stages gave it that high authority which is the priceless capital ofcentralism.”

8/8/2019 Military Resistance 8J10 Welcome to Obamaworld[1]

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/military-resistance-8j10-welcome-to-obamaworld1 18/29

Rabinowitch, in his book The Bolsheviks Come to Power, is able to demonstrate in richdetail that “within the Bolshevik Petrograd organization at all levels in 1917, there wascontinuing free and lively discussion and debate over the most basic theoretical andtactical issues,” and that the party had shifting left, center and moderate tendencieswithin it, right through the revolutionary period.

“Leaders who differed with the majority were at liberty to fight for their views, and notinfrequently, Lenin was the loser in those struggles.”

*******************************************

SURPRISING THOUGH these insights are to most bourgeois or anarchistcommentators, the Bolsheviks’ open and democratic character flowed from itscommitment to workers’ self-emancipation.

Lenin’s insistence on the need to build a disciplined party of revolutionaries is usuallypresented as a product of his “distrust” of the working class’s revolutionary potential--when, in fact, Lenin’s entire political career was based on the proposition, established in

the early years of the Russian Marxist movement, that, “(t)he revolutionary movement inRussia can triumph only as the revolutionary movement of the workers.”

Nikolai Sukhanov, by no means a Bolshevik supporter in 1917, but who witnessed theparty at close quarters in the days leading up to the October Revolution, observed theinterconnectedness between the party and the working class:

The Bolsheviks were working stubbornly and without letup. They were among themasses, at the factory benches, every day without a pause. Tens of speakers, big andlittle, were speaking in Petersburg, at the factories and in the barracks, every blessedday.

For the masses, they had become their own people, because they were always there, taking the lead in details as well as in the most important affairs of the factory orbarracks. They had become the sole hope...The mass lived and breathed together withthe Bolsheviks.

What Sukhanov seemed not to understand is that the Bolsheviks themselves wereworkers--leaders on the ground in the day-to-day struggle.

They did not parachute in from somewhere else; they were already there.

As early as June, for example, Bolshevik delegates dominated the conferences of thefactory committees. The Bolshevik vanguard was not an isolated elite, but organized

working-class militants tempered by shared experience and shared politics, developedthrough interaction with their fellow workers.

One lesson of the Russian Revolution is that workers can take over the running ofsociety; revolutions can win. Of course, the lesson of many failed workers’ revolutions(1905 in Russia or 1919-23 in Germany, for example) is that such victories are by nomeans guaranteed.

8/8/2019 Military Resistance 8J10 Welcome to Obamaworld[1]

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/military-resistance-8j10-welcome-to-obamaworld1 19/29

Another, equally important lesson is that such a revolution can only win, as it did inRussia, if the working class organizes its own revolutionary party to guide its path topower.

Abolitionist John Brown led a group of 21 other men, five black and sixteen white, in a

raid on the U.S. arsenal at Harper’s Ferry, Virginia.

They had hoped to set off a slave revolt, throughout the south, with the weapons theyhad planned to seize. Virtually all his compatriots were killed or captured by Gen. RobertE. Lee’s troops; Brown was wounded and arrested, and hanged for treason within twomonths.

Before hearing his sentence, Brown was allowed make an address to the court.

“. . . I believe to have interfered as I have done, . . . in behalf of His despised poor, was not wrong, but right. “Now, if it be deemed necessary that I should forfeit mylife for the furtherance of the ends of justice, and mingle my blood further with theblood of my children, and with the blood of millions in this slave country whoserights are disregarded by wicked, cruel, and unjust enactments, I submit: so let itbe done.”

“Had I interfered in the manner which I admit, and which I admit has been fairlyproved (for I admire the truthfulness and candor of the greater portion of thewitnesses who have testified in this case), -- had I so interfered in behalf of therich, the powerful, the intelligent, the so-called great, or in behalf of any of theirfriends -- either father, mother, sister, wife, or children, or any of that class -- andsuffered and sacrificed what I have in this interference, it would have been allright; and every man in this court would have deemed it an act worthy of rewardrather than punishment.”

Although initially shocked by Brown’s exploits, many Northerners began to speakfavorably of the militant abolitionist.

“He did not recognize unjust human laws, but resisted them as he was bid. . . .,” saidHenry David Thoreau in an address to the citizens of Concord, Massachusetts. “No manin America has ever stood up so persistently and effectively for the dignity of humannature. . . .”

John Brown was hanged on December 2, 1859.

On the day of his death he wrote:

“I, John Brown, am now quite certain that the crimes of this guilty land will neverbe purged away but with blood.”

Osceola (“Black Drink”) (circa 1804-1838) Seminole leaderBy George Catlin, 1838

Carl Bunin Peace History October 15-21

The U.S. Army, enforcing Pres. Andrew Jackson’s Indian Removal Act, capturedSeminole Indian leader Osceola (meaning “Black Drink”) by inviting him to apeace conference and then seizing him and nineteen others, though they hadcome under a flag of truce.

The Seminole had moved to Florida (then under the control of Spain) from SouthCarolina and Georgia as they were forced from their ancestral lands, then forced farthersouth into the Everglades where they settled.

Under the law Jackson urged on Congress, they and the others of the “Five CivilizedTribes” (Choctaws, Chickasaws, Creeks and Cherokees) were to be moved, by force ifnecessary, west of the Mississippi (Arkansas and Oklahoma).

 Npg.Si.Edu [Excerpt]

Although neither a hereditary nor an elected chief, Osceola was the defiant young leaderof the Seminole in their resistance to Indian emigration.

In 1835 he plunged his knife into the treaty he was asked to sign that would move hispeople from their swamplands in the Southeast to the unoccupied territory west of theMississippi. This action precipitated the Second Seminole War--a seven-year game ofcat-and-mouse in the Florida swamps against federal troops.

Tricked into talking peace, Osceola was captured in 1837 while carrying a whiteflag of truce and was imprisoned in Fort Moultrie, South Carolina.

This treachery so outraged George Catlin that he went immediately to the prison. He andOsceola became friends, and Osceola willingly posed for his portrait.

“This gallant fellow,” wrote Catlin, “is grieving with a broken spirit, and ready to

die, cursing the white man, no doubt to the end of his breath.”

Soon after this portrait was completed, Osceola died of malaria. Osceola’s name wasderived from the Indian term “Asiyahola,” the cry given by those taking the ceremonialblack drink that was supposed to cleanse the body and spirit.

Trial:Lawsuit Asks Court “To Force TheGovernment To Disclose The Process ItUsed To Determine That A U.S. Citizen

Can Be Executed Without Trial”

SEPTEMBER 25, 2010 By EVAN PEREZ, The Wall Street Journal

The Obama administration was preparing a request on Friday to block a lawsuit over thescope of its targeted killing program for suspected terrorists, in a case that challengesthe government's powers in its war on terror.

U.S. officials say national security is threatened by Yemeni-American Islamist clericAnwar al-Awlaki, whose fiery sermons are a major draw for anti-American jihadists onthe Internet. Mr. Awlaki, a U.S. citizen, is believed to be targeted for extrajudicial killingfor his alleged involvement in terror plots against the U.S.

Last month, Mr. Awlaki's father, with the aid of U.S. civil-liberties groups, filed suit inDistrict of Columbia federal court seeking an order to stop the government from killingMr. Awlaki unless he posed an immediate threat.

The suit also asked the court to force the government to disclose the process itused to determine that a U.S. citizen can be executed without trial.

The government was scheduled to file its response to the suit late Friday.

A U.S. official said the government would challenge Nasser al-Awlaki's standing to bringthe suit on behalf of his son, who is believed to be hiding in Yemen.

The government doesn't admit or deny whether it plans to kill Mr. Awlaki, or disclose anydetails of the targeted killing program.

But the official said it would argue that Mr. Awlaki, as a U.S. citizen, would have accessto the courts if he wants to surrender peacefully.

The filing was set to argue that it is not for the courts to decide whether it is legalto kill an American in Yemen, far from the actual battlefield in Afghanistan, wherethe U.S. is fighting al Qaeda. Congress and the president should determine thatquestion, according to the filing.

As a fallback argument, the U.S. was planning to say that even if a court decides toallow a case to proceed, the government's state-secrets privilege would prohibit the suitbecause classified programs could be exposed.

Vincent Warren, executive director of the Center for Constitutional Rights, said:"Targeting a person for assassination without due process is exactly the question

for the courts to answer."

The center and the American Civil Liberties Union are representing the elder Mr. Awlaki.

Asked whether the father has standing to bring the lawsuit, Mr. Warren says: "Thefact is, Mr. Awlaki cannot take steps to legally protect his life without endangeringhis life.

“Even communicating with lawyers risks exposing his location, potentially leadingto them killing him."

The Awlaki case raises broader issues of how far the government can go in its efforts to

pursue terrorists.

Robert Chesney, a University of Texas law professor, said: "What this is really about isthe overarching question: Is the battlefield really limited to Afghanistan or is it the wholeworld?"

The Obama administration has expanded the use of targeted killings, mostly in droneattacks carried out by the Central Intelligence Agency or the military. Most of thoseattacks have been in Pakistan and Afghanistan, where al Qaeda planned the Sept. 11,2001, attacks.

The administration has cited the laws of war and a post-9/11 congressional authorization

for use of military force as the legal grounds for many of its counterterrorism moves.

The Great Obama Health CareReform Fraud:

“So Far, Only 3,600 Signed Up For

The New Health Insurance”“Each Person Would Have To Pay MoreThan $6,100 Per Year, At A Minimum, In

Premiums And Deductibles”

September 13 - 27, 2010 Spark Newspaper

The first part of Obama’s health care reform began July 1, when those with pre-

existing medical conditions were allowed to sign up for health insurance.

For years, the health insurance industry had been denying coverage to those who had a“pre-existing” condition or who had a history of illness.

The Congressional Budget Office estimated that four million uninsured people would beaffected, and that perhaps 200,000 would sign up immediately.

So far, only 3,600 signed up for the new health insurance. Why so few? Plain andsimple, they can’t afford the outrageous rates offered under the plan.

Kaiser Health News pointed out that each person would have to pay more than

$6,100 per year, at a minimum, in premiums and deductibles.

Yet the health insurance companies are getting a billion dollars a year from thefederal government for the next five years to sign up these people with pre-existing conditions.

In other words, the system has been “reformed” to help the insurance companies.
