Dear Parents and Community
NAPLAN Last week, the Year 3 and 5 students participated in the annual National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy. I would like to congratulate the students on their efforts and achievements throughout the testing period. Book Fair Thank you to Mrs Topham for organising and running the annual Book Fair and to Mrs Jones for assisting. We had many parents and community members walk through the library doors to purchase some beautiful books. Both classes participated in a bookmark competition, which entailed each student choosing their favourite book and designing a bookmark based off it. Congratulations to the following students; Junior Room - First: Tyler Douglas , Second: Rory Seymour , Third: Keira Latham Senior Room - First: Benji Martin, Second: Aiden Georgy, Third: Molly McCuish Read Aloud in May Challenge Don’t forget about the ‘Read Aloud in May Challenge’ that is well underway. You should have registered by now and be recording your nightly reading for your chance to win. If you have misplaced your nomination form, please see your child’s classroom teacher for a new one.
Certificates of Distinction The recipients of our homework Certificates of Distinction were highlighted in our previous newsletter. Unfortunately, Heidi Seymour was absent for the photo, and was accidentally omitted from being mentioned. Congratulations to Heidi.
Lightning Carnival
Next Monday 28 May, our Year 3-6
students will be travelling to Moora to
participate in the annual Lightning
Carnival. Our students will be involved in
either football, soccer, hockey or netball
with students from St Joseph’s, Moora,
Dandaragan, Kalannie, Watheroo,
Wongan Hills and Dalwallinu. I wish all of
our students the best of luck in their
chosen sport.
Performing Arts
Next week, students from PP to Year 6
will be participating in the Performing
Arts Festival in Moora. Our students
have been busily learning a new song
and choreographing a dance, and are
excited to perform in front of a crowd. I
hope to see many parents and
community members in attendance and
know our children would love to see
some familiar faces in the crowd.
Assembly
Our first assembly for the term will be
held next Thursday, 31 May, at 8:50am.
The Senior Room will be performing
whilst the Junior Room will be
presenting their Bring and Brag. We
hope to see you there. Continued next page ...

Skipping is back at Miling Primary School! In Game Factory last week I taught the Seniors a couple of skipping games, to encourage them to practice skipping at recess and lunch. The student leaders then helped me to run some skipping practice for the Junior Room. It ran smoothly and they managed the students well. Everyone had a good time and kids were keen to show off their skipping skills.
Thinking back a little further, week 2, the Senior Room had its second attempt at Triple Threat Dodge and made significant improvements. The ‘it’ teams co-operated far better, getting in front of each other’s throws so as not to lose the ball. One team set the new record of 9 people out in 1 minute. A good reflection from this game is the importance of supporting roles. It can seem like the player with the ball is all important but if their team mates don’t support them and they don‘t think about where they are then they are likely to waste time by throwing the ball out of the court. Similarly, in life and in the classroom, it’s easy to think that only the person in the spotlight matters but by listening to and supporting that person we can learn from them and help them do a better job. The Juniors enjoyed playing Snake again and, despite good competition and plenty of excitement, they managed to look after each other fairly well; not leaving behind the tail of their snake too often.
I’ll go quiet for the next two weeks as I’ll just be supporting at the Lightning Carnival and I’m not working on the day of Performing Arts. I still look forward to attending as a spectator though!

The purpose of a school board is to set the long term future direction of
the school, maintain effective oversight of the implementation of the
business plan and provide additional expertise to help the school achieve
the best outcomes for students. This year, the school board would like to
lift their profile in the community. To assist in this, we will shine a
spotlight on our board members throughout the year.
First up, Paul White, Miling PS School Board Chairperson!
What is your role on the board?
Chairperson, Parent Representative.
How long have you been on the board for?
Since 2015.
What made you join the board?
At the time, I had three kids at Miling PS.
What traits define you?
Good listener (Lisa talks enough for the both of us!).
What’s one thing you can’t live without?
If I don’t say my wife she will probably put rat poison in my dinner.
If you could learn anything, what would it be?
We never stop learning really, but probably need to brush up on paramedicine.
What is the best advice you have received?
Always listen to the teacher!
What do you love about Miling PS? There’s a great culture at Miling PS amongst staff, students and
parents. Students graduate from Miling PS well prepared for their secondary education.

Miling defeated Strikers in another hot game of hockey. It was a home game and great for the kids to
have lots of supporters on the sidelines. We won 4-0.
Seniors
We started with an almost full squad which we would need for the hot weather. However 10 minutes
into the game we had lost two of our halfbacks with injuries. Thanks to Chloe Taylor as a last minute
fill in. Thankfully, both CJ and Tash returned to the field in the second half, but unfortunately we went
down 2-0.
Thanks to everyone who helped out with our home game.

This week we had our toughest challenge so far up against Robins Red. It bwas a great test for the
team and they played a great game, coming out with a 1 all draw.
Seniors
This week we celebrated a great player, teammate and Club person, Clare Douglas, who played her
200th senior game for Miling. As hard as we fought, unfortunately we couldn’t get back the early goal
scored from Strikers 2, and lost 1-0.
CONGRATULATIONS to Clare on a great hockey career so far and bring on the next 200 games!
The Miling Netball Club is holding a fundraising raffle for a hamper with
all sorts of goodies for the whole family.
Raffle tickets are available at the Post Office, or you can contact Karen
on 0448 541 100 or Janette on 0429 922 198.
$2 per ticket, or $5 for 3 tickets.
We would appreciate your support. Thanks!
