• There are two schools of thought regarding multiplicity of devices. Some people want one device that does everything. Others want their devices clearly delineated.

• People want lots of features, but also want a device that's simple and easy to use.

• People are frustrated by a lack of compatibility across devices.

User Research Findings

Page 13: MiLife Graduate Design Seminar II Discovery & Exploratory Research Synthesis

miLife

• People want their devices to be durable and reliable.

• Value is a big factor.

• People use the internet and email from their home and work, but use their cellular phones elsewhere to communicate and get information.

• The size of the device is important.

User Research Findings

Page 14: MiLife Graduate Design Seminar II Discovery & Exploratory Research Synthesis

miLife

• People don't use or carry PDAs and MP3 Players very often.

• People always carry their cell phones, usually in their bags, pockets, or hands.

• People are still using paper to capture and organize information. It seems to be because paper is accessible, cheap, fast, and easy.

User Research Findings

Page 15: MiLife Graduate Design Seminar II Discovery & Exploratory Research Synthesis

miLife

• Devices now act as portable hard drives for information.

• Trend is to have all your information available on all your different devices.

• Microsoft dedicated to "bringing the smart devices together with very rich interfaces" in "seamless computing experiences."

• Bluetooth has re-emerged as the standard for personal-area networks.

• Broadband, streaming video and music will soon be commonplace.

• GPS is being built into many phones and other devices.

Product Research Findings

Page 16: MiLife Graduate Design Seminar II Discovery & Exploratory Research Synthesis

miLife

• Ideally should fit in a purse or pocket.

• Should support transfer of data for backup or upgrade.

• Should be very compatible with other devices — possibly Bluetooth enabled to move information between devices easily.

• Should use materials that embody quality and economy.

Implications

Page 17: MiLife Graduate Design Seminar II Discovery & Exploratory Research Synthesis

miLife

• Translate functions and qualities of paper to digital.

– Functions: communicating, capturing and organizing information quickly, as a memory tool

– Qualities: accessible, cheap, fast, easy, reliable, portable, versatile

• We have to either design one device that does many things, or we have to design a device that only does 1-2 things very well.

Implications

Page 18: MiLife Graduate Design Seminar II Discovery & Exploratory Research Synthesis

miLife

• Design needs to have appropriate features without being complex.

• Receiving and sending information should be at least as easy as using a cell phone.

• Device should be durable.

• Devices should possibly be GPS enabled.
