THE WAYFORWARD

MILESTONE FOUNDATION

Page 2: Milestone Foundation Brochure_October 2015

We have a focus upon the following areasand activities:

• Youth unemployment • The provision of safe spaces and activities • The promotion and development of emotional intelligence / resilience training

The Foundation’s activities fall within the following objectives:

• Advancement of education and relief of unemployment • Community participation in healthy recreation • Promotion of social inclusion

THE MILESTONE FOUNDATION

WAS ESTABLISHED IN JULY 2013

BY MILESTONE GROUP PLC TO

HELP DELIVER ON ITS CORPORATE

MISSION TO 'MAKE A PROFIT &

MAKE A DIFFERENCE'

WHO ARE WE?

OUR VISIONFor all people, the opportunity to live their life to its full potential with tolerance and respect for others.

OUR MISSIONTo educate and empower young people to build a better future for themselves and others.

WHAT DO WE DO?We support and promote the protection, education and empowerment of all members of society, but particularly the young. We believe that, with the right tools, any one individual has the potential to change the world.

We are constantly on the look out for individualsand organisations that are doing exceptionalwork in their chosen field, especially those whooften go unnoticed.

By collaborating to identify and deliver projects and programmes embedded with our education, training and operational tools, we are building anever-expanding network of quality services and delivery partnerships that span across the public, private, and third sector communities. By working together, we look to help match organisations for delivery purposes thereby improving efficienciesand increasing funding opportunities, whilst promoting our participating partners in the process.

This methodology helps to ensure that we add valuable educational and social impact to our target audience, the surrounding community, and also help our delivery partners achieve their own specific objectives in the process.

WE AGGREGATEWE COLLABORATEWE AMPLIFY

WHY DO WE DO IT?We believe that everyone is born with:

• The desire to succeed • A need to belong • To feel they make a difference

We want to create the opportunity for our partners and participants to achieve all of these and more.

We look to build and aggregate partnerships and strategic alliances at local, regional and national level as people in business, community and education are essential partners in our delivery model.

Our commitment is to promote the services and activities of all our partners to the wider communities to help positively change or influence the way in which business is done and to facilitate the creation of additional opportunities for development and efficiencies wherever possible.

Our intention is to help create a process that assists other charitable entities to become sustainable. We do this by facilitating introductions to new sources of funding and commercial partners, productising offerings, providing access to distribution, raising partner profiles, and providing data and evidenceto support their ongoing development.

HOW DO WE DO IT?

Social value impact is the effect of an activity on the social fabric of the community and the wellbeing of its individuals and families.

We believe our operational process and range of services – which incorporate education, and training activities, volunteering, mentoring, entrepreneurship, community and outreach initiatives amongst other things – will promote and produce a wide range of measurable social benefits for all members of society regardless of age, gender or belief.

We work with an ever-expanding range of bespoke digital systems and mobile solutions to ensure social value impact is measured for each of its activities – examples of which are shown later.

SOCIAL VALUE IMPACT

Page 4: Milestone Foundation Brochure_October 2015

THERE IS INCREASING PUBLIC

CONCERN AT THE EXTENT AND

DEPTH OF EMOTIONAL AND

BEHAVIOURAL DIFFICULTIES

EXPERIENCED BY CHILDREN

AND YOUNG PEOPLE, PARTICULARLY

IN DISADVANTAGED AREAS

EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE

ABOUT EIThe current UK curriculum is poorly served by material that addresses emotional and moral development directly. As a result, children’s emotional intelligence rarely reaches its potential. This can lead to pooroutcomes during school and later life.(Source: A Curriculum for Life – Youth Select Committee Report).

An Ofsted report in 2013 also found that the school curriculum was “usually more coherent and comprehensive” if it offered social and emotional learning thereby highlighting the necessity for provision in this area.

One of our core areas of focus is the promotion and delivery of education and training which supports emotional intelligence. By giving people the tools by which they can more effectively shape their own lives, they go on to be mentally stronger, healthier, and happier members of society. Our approach focuses on developing individuals from the inside out. It is our belief that this process offers positive and significant long-term benefits, not only for the participant, but also for their family, friends, employers, their community and the world at large. EI or sometimes EQ (Emotional Quotient) is a modern concept developed in the mid-1990s. Emotional intelligence is the measure of an individual’s ability to recognise and manage their emotions, and the emotions of others, both individually and in groups.

Research shows that having a high IQ does not ensure that you will be the most appropriate person for a job, or have the most friends, since the connection between an individual’s intelligence quotient and emotional intelligence are not found to be linked.

Both IQ and EI attempt to measure different aspects of human intelligence. These measurements, along with personality, make up an individual’s psyche. Emotional intelligence is the one part of the human psyche that we can develop and improve by learning and practicing new skills. IQ and personality are more static measures and likely to stay quite constant through life.

This knowledge or self-awareness is applicable to all people and not just those deemed to be vulnerable or from disadvantaged backgrounds.

EI/EQ or resilience training is embedded throughoutour work. Examples include: Winning in the Game of Life™ (early intervention), the Passion Project’s“Life Ready” and “Work Ready” training programmes (young people), and via The Business Gym for the Corporate marketplace.

THE PASSION PROJECT

OUR FLAGSHIP PRODUCT

A HUMAN PROJECTThe Passion Project is our flagship product. It is a large-scale youth engagement programme that generates positive outcomes for young people by unlocking the individual’s potential, and supporting their development through a network (ecosystem) of sustainable commercial and social partnerships.

Designed in collaboration with young people, its focus is to bring together all the parties involved in the provision of youth engagement, careers advice, and training and employment opportunities for the purpose of providing an end-to-end service for young people.

The Passion Project’s collaborative approach naturally develops a supportive social marketplace that provides for both the development of the individual whilst also helping address the social, economic and political needs of its participating partners.

By using a network of relationships, it offers its members access to a social exchange / marketplace aimed at helping to address those issues that arise from the existing wide scale fragmentation acrossthe commercial and charitable sectors.

Using a combination of physical activities, participation in education and training, underpinned by interaction with a digital platform and the smart use of mobile applications, the programme offers us a unique opportunity to generate and record significant social impact.

The programme’s operational transparency and regulation of member organisations has been designed to ensure that the integrity of the programme remains intact regardless of size. The core focus is

the achievement of positive outcomes for the target audience of young people whilst also delivering services and creating opportunities of value for its members and society as a whole. The Passion Project’s network of relationships provides access and signposts to a wide range of information and support organisations that are incorporated to help participants navigate life’s challenges.

The programme is committed to education and training, however, it has a particular focus on promoting the development of young people’s emotional intelligence and wellbeing as the bedrock for all future learning and employability training.

The DNA of the Passion Project is based upon a universal set of rules designed to preserve the integrity of the programme regardless of scale, and to ensure that the ongoing associated commercial and social benefit is received by all.

THE LADDER

TRAININGOur courses are specifically designed to be a dynamic learning experience for young people aged 16-25. By focusing upon both the “inner game” of values, beliefs, self-perception and doubts, an understanding of how these factors can affect the “outer game” of achieving success in life is gained.

Those who join the course are taken on a journey of personal development that builds self-awareness, motivation and personal leadership, as well as learning the skills necessary to work effectively as part of a team, take up employment in an organisation and contribute as an active citizen to society.

SIMPLY PUT: OUR PEOPLE

AND OUR PROCESS

WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT?

OUR PEOPLEThe Milestone Foundation team is made up of individuals who have proven track records ofdelivery in their respective fields and who sharea common purpose – to make a difference.A comprehensive biography for each member of the team can be found on the Milestone Foundation website – milestonefoundation.org.uk

OUR PROCESSThe use of bespoke digital media, technology, and mobile applications plays a big part in our operation. Examples of this can be found across all of our engagement methods, as well as in our data collection and evidence gathering tools used to monitor our projects. The impact of having a joined-up approach provides a number of advantages ranging from enhancing efficiency, providing evidence for future funding and collating data to share with partners to help measure social value impact.

The process used in the Passion Project and its rules of engagement create a highly scalable, self-sustaining ecosystem designed to drive significant social impact and benefit to all. In the future it is our hope that our aggregated data and methodology can be used to help guide policy.

We are fortunate to have access to a number of products that help demonstrate the potential for large-scale impact and include Winning in the Game of Life™, Disorder Magazine, and OnSide. More details can be found on these and our pilot results in the following case studies or on the Foundation’s website.

ONSIDE

OUR WORK

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENTWe’re constantly working with our technology partner, Milestone Group Plc, on the development of digital tools to underpin our commitment to the collection of data and the measurement of our social impact. An example of which is OnSide, a mobile application used to measure and monitor the engagement of young people participating in sporting activities.

Through our partners, we are aligned to a number of schemes being run throughout the UK that cater for many thousands of young people on a weekly basis. Sports clubs and organisations that operate sports coaching and training sessions have numerous responsibilities when working with the general public and in particular the young or vulnerable members of society.

Apart from managing operational efficiencies many health and safety obligations exist to ensure that the safety of the participants, the coaches and the general public remain a priority to any organisation engaging in such activities with severe penalties for noncompliance.

OnSide was designed in collaboration with Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT), Charlton have an industry renowned reputation for the work they do in the community. OnSide was originally created to replace a paper based attendee registration process used by coaches to record attended at football training sessions. Since its inception, OnSide has developed and is now used to record the attendance, compliance, risk assessment and governance information of their community initiatives, as well as providing lone worker protection to teams and individual coaches.

THE BENEFITSThe participating pupils improved in thefollowing areas:

• Information sharing • Provides for Safer community • Comprehensive Risk Assessment tool • Enhanced record keeping and audit trail • Compliance / Best Practice • Secure • Provision of accurate data • Provision of data / bespoke impact reports

A great example of technology development through a people centred approach to its development OnSide now also includes News Share. This provides the ability for community stakeholders including Law Enforcement, Local Authority and Schools to share relevant news items and alerts with the Club and it’s coaches, providing a real-time platform for information sharing between all the parties helping to build safer neighbourhoods.

The Newshare facility provides up to date information regarding missing persons, community news, training courses and events and can be accessed by any coach from their mobile devices

DISORDER MAGAZINE

OUR WORK

EDUCATION & TRAININGDisorder Magazine UK is an independent, cutting edge and constantly evolving youth magazine featuring the best in new music, fashion, art, technology and film. The original publication, with The Bluetones gracing the first cover, launched into record stores as an East London fanzine in 1999. Early copies saw features with the likes of Britpop favourites Suede and Blur; then in 2004, with the strong support of Channel 4/4Talent, Disorder launched the first glossy print magazine into newsagents, achievinga circulation of 65,000 copies worldwide. Acquired by Milestone Group Plc in 2013 as a youth and media engagement tool for Milestone’s charitable initiatives, The Foundation works with Disorder to develop and deliver creative based training progammes. Disorder Magazine engages young people from all walks of life who are enthusiastic about fashion and music, and are keen to gain some industry experience in their chosen field of interest. RECENT DEVELOPMENTS

WINNING IN THEGAME OF LIFE™We are delighted to confirm that we have recently secured the necessary funding to facilitate the roll out of our Winning in the Game of Life™ educational programme in 100 primary schools throughout the UK commencing in January 2016.

The necessary teacher training will be carried out by those educational specialists involved in the original pilot in 2013 / 2014 and a social impact survey with a leading educational establishment to capture the resulting changes in pupils’ behaviour and learning is currently under discussion.

EMPOWERING OTHERSNEW: MOBILE APPLICATION

We are in the process of developing our own mobile application designed to help engage and connect our partners and target audience. The application will be used to update our audience and partner network on developments via integrated news items across a range of social media networks.

A unique feature of the application is the inclusion of an entertainment platform offering content from a wide range of providers. These include iTunes, Google Play, Netflix, Deezer, Vudu, and many more, showcasing over 43m songs, 85,000 films, 300,000 TV programmes, 25m books, 1.4m Apps/Gamesand 24/7 radio.

The platform also offers the audience access to branded / pre-paid card & virtual accounts, online retail store plus a travel and hotel bookings platform.

This functionality, through a revenue sharing agreement, allows us the opportunity to create a number of new revenue opportunities that can be used to fund new projects, support partner initiatives and develop new products.

Once launched, and as part of its licensing agreement, the Milestone Foundation mobile application will be made available as a white label offering to other charitable organisations who are also in need of sourcing new revenue streams, attracting new supporters and raising profile.

Whilst the white label opportunity may only be of real benefit to those organisations who already have access to a large audience or supporter base, the Foundation has included a feature in its mobile application that provides for the showcasing of Partner initiatives, and is intended to help support their development by encouraging donations from our audience to their cause.

Page 15: Milestone Foundation Brochure_October 2015

We aim to support the government's pledge to tackle youth unemployment through the delivery of three million apprenticeships over the next five years in collaboration with our network of partners. The purpose of thealliance is to help build a routeway for quality apprenticeships with career pathways equal to those offered through higher education. We believe it can offer improved and meaningful CSR initiatives, measurable social impact in communities and innovative pathways to apprenticeships by: • Putting life skills first • Providing emotional intelligence • Providing individual careers guidance • Offering innovative apprenticeship route ways to sustainable employment

The Alliance will provide sustainable apprenticeships whilst paying an appropriate wage enabling the young people to feel valued for their contribution. Our intention is to maximise employer engagement in the delivery of the apprenticeship framework to help drive improvements in success rates, sustainable employment and increased industry activity and acceptance. With the offer of quality apprenticeships giving hope and opportunities to more young people, and along with the sharing of best practice, it is our expectation that the associated delivery standards will be improved resulting in increased satisfaction for both the employer and the apprentice.

Through collaboration with Sport, Industry and Business along with engagement via local and central Government, we aim to enhance and strengthen the “apprenticeship reputation” with young people and employers alike across our partner network. Through our relationships, we intend to identify 500 work-ready apprentices and partner them with appropriate apprenticeship opportunities made available to the Foundation.

These young people will be supported by our volunteers and mentors over the next 12 months to help cultivate and develop young apprenticeship ambassadors and work place mentors who in turn will look to help engage a new generation going forward. It is important for all parties that we engage young people through their natural skills and areas of interest, provide them with life skills and careers guidance to ensure they are matched with the best possible opportunity for their individual needs.

The Alliance will only promote apprenticeships that offer substantial training and support so as to ensure we offer the best opportunity to create a positive impact for both the employer and employee which in turn increases the future appeal of the programme.

Another key aim of the Alliance is to help provide schools with the support they need to provide life skills, good quality careers advice and work experience for their pupils.

If you are passionate about young people, quality education or sustainable employment and want toknow how you can support the Alliance please pledge your support.

We would like to hear from you if:

• You need apprentices • You want to make a social impact • You deliver quality training • You are a responsible employer • You promote responsible procurement • You are a community organisation • You provide innovative youth engagement initiatives • You can support volunteering & mentoring • You need ethical CSR solutions
