Hundreds of years ago in the red lands of Arizona, a group of native American Warriors left their homes to set out on a journey to seek a Spirit– a Spirit that was believed to give men the power to conquer new lands and preserve their youth. These men set out, braving the elements. But having travelled far and wide fruitlessly, many gave up hope and returned one by one. Until there were only two left- who refused to give up until they found the Spirit. After forty days and forty nights of travelling without rest or an end in sight, they slept. And in a dream, the Spirit revealed itself, waiting for only one of them at the foot of the Black Mountain. With renewed energy, each wanting to be The Chosen One, they set off for the Black Mountain that very night reaching it at the crack of dawn, only to discover a roaring river surrounding it on all sides! Not wanting to loose out at this crucial stage, they both dived in to the roaring waters and raised towards their goal. And just as one of the men was on the verge of reaching the other side, he heard a scream of terror. He looked back to see his competitor floundering in the savage waters about to be swept away. The man’s conscience prevailed, saving a fellow man was more important than finding the Spirit. And without any further thought, he returned back! In a flash, savage waters magically calmed, turning the mighty river into a sparkling stream. And a booming voice rose from the heart of the Black Mountain. “I am Tucson” it echoed. And the Spirit you seek is within you…. And as long as you travel together keeping a look out for one another, the Spirit will live on! Keeping you young, keeping you alive! Neeru joins me in my prayers to The Almighty to bless you and everyone in your Family and your Club with the Spirit of Tucson in the Rotary year 2010-11 and thereafter. Modern anti T.B. treatment can cure virtually all patients. It is, however very important that treatment be taken for the prescribed duration which in every case is a minimum of six months. Because treatment is of such a long duration, once the patient feels better after a couple of months the treatment is often interrupted, the reason being that apart from poverty there are numerous other problems that they face and have to manage while fighting on all fronts with T.B. as a major disadvantage making life as close to hell as possible.

Members of our club have rallied together to help a substantial number of patients who do not have the resources to get treatment for T.B. and its upgraded version of MDR, since the last five years. These years have been a period of learning with some heart rending instances which strengthen our resolve to do something for the less fortunate.

One such case is of an MDR patient who was in such a bad state that he could not walk let alone come to the clinic. His wife had deserted him and father was invalid, his old mother came regularly to the clinic and ensured that he took the medicines properly. But unfortunately she had a severe heart attack and could not survive, but by then the patient had been shifted from MDR to regular T.B. medicines, and finally after a few months was cured completely.

In our second phase of treating MDR patients we have achieved great success in terms of treating number of patients getting either cured/ converted to regular patients. Providing T.B. medicines is not sufficient, they also need advice on matters of diet, health and hygiene from time to time.

This project requires significant resources in terms of funds and time. In the past the club has been receiving donations from members, associates, our club and individuals from other countries. We sincerely hope that we will keep receiving funds for the projects to survive and grow as well as volunteer so that we have a pool of members/anns who understand the systems due to which this project is running smoothly and give new ideas so that the project can be taken to the next level.Rotary Greater is grateful to all the donors who have contributed to the programme from time to time. This year, we have received donations from Ann Vinita Kejriwal (Rs 11,000), Rtn Sanjay Tandon (Rs 5,000), Dr Ravi Tandon (Rs 11,000 + calendars for the volunteers).

Apart from this, one of the members gave free bags and files to all the patients. Bottles of Tonic and sanitizers were also received from our Secretary Rtn Rishi Kapoor.

We are also thankful to Rtn. Dr. Pankaj Tandon for his continued involvement and advise for the efficient running of this project.

What would life be without some fun, frolic and enjoyment. All work and no play would indeed make RCKG dull so all the members let down their hair and enjoyed themselves at the Blue Mask Party organized at Palate Restaurant, Rave Moti on 30th July 2010. The PDs for the evening were Rtn Rajiv Agarwal & Ann Manju Agarwal, Rtn Rakesh Kapoor & Ann Sangeeta Kapoor, Rtn. Sanjay Gupta & Ann Poonam Gupta who made special efforts in making the evening glamorous and enjoyable. Every entrant was given a beautiful blue mask made by the PDs. The décor was in blue, the dress code was blue. All around one could see creativity and pains taking efforts at their best. Palate was transformed into a Venetian Evening masques, music and dancing et al. The evening had romantic overtones with the Rtns and Anns collecting hearts or rather stealing hearts from behind the masks.

Ann Nandita, much to the chagrin of Rtn Dinesh won the maximum hearts. Then there was dancing and revelry. Anns and Rtns danced and made statuesque poses like hand in hand, back to back, Jhappi and the proposal pose. Oh, it was so romantic. The games organized kept all busy and involved. Annets seem to be having a good time as well. The evening winded up with merry making and a delicious dinner.

5th of August 2010 saw the ann wing programme at the residence of Ann Neelima Desai. A demonstration on icing techniques was held by Mrs. Shraddha Singhania. The anns not only enjoyed the demo, they also participated in the event. The rotarians can expect many iced cakes in the coming weeks.
