ANCHOR —OPUS DATELINE: HOLLAND
A cooperative effort by state, local and federal law enforcement personnel has resulted In the arrests of seven members of the anchor, a notorious underground weekly, it was announced.
The daring midnight raid, which came off without a st i tch, was prompted by in format ion discovered by an FBI undercover agent assigned to the anchor case, federal authorit ies said.
According to FBI sources. Agent Zelda Skagfang learned of a top anchor tactical planning meeting that was to be held under the guise of a birthday party. Local police kept the known members of the group under surveillance unt i l Friday night, when Governor Milliken mobilized units of the Michigan National Guard. The Guard units surrounded the building where the meeting was being held, and the state and local police moved in, making the arrests.
No resistance was offered, police say, but those arrested were searched for dan-gerous weapons, drugs, abort ion ads, and VD. An object off icial ly described as being " round, fluffy and gooey' looking with some candles stuck in the t o p " was confiscated at the scene, as were several fountain pens and 1939 Underwood Noiseless. Said one police off icer: "The fact that it has a silencer on it pretty well establishes the fact that they were up to no good, in spite of what they c la im."
Agent Skagfang had been posing as a cleaning lady on the Hope College campus for the past year in connection with the anchor case, authorit ies said.
Those arrested were: left to right: Tom (The Waterloo Kid) Siderius, Dave (the Knave) Dustin, "B ig Garret t" DeGraff, "Greasy Gerald" Swieringa, Bob (Bri l lo) Roos, Louie ("da Louse") Schakel, and "Bad Barry" Schreiber. Authorit ies are stil l searching for "Mad Mary" Houting, E. Verduin, Kay Hubbard and Bob Blanton.
At this t ime, the group are being held in escrow, await ing tr ial . If convicted, they could be hanged in Effigy, a town due east of Borculo.
