The Stockholm Public Library is a very mono- lithic monument that is seen as an icon for the neighborhood of Stockholm. Keeping this in mind I decided after the visit that an addition to the building would require a connection to the an-nexes and a careful consideration on circulation through-out the building and its connection. After looking at the axises of the Asplund library and the porportions of the annex building opposite, I formed a shape that created a new annex that was slightly angled and closer to the Asplund library to connect to physicallyto a new west reading room. This also created a more defined plaza for the occupants and flower market currently there. The heights of the buildings were defined by the connections; the back volume joining the Asplund library and the annexes meet both to create a continous connection line between each building.

Le Piagge, a suburb of Florence, Italy, is an unique area in that it has developed in a very sprawl manner, unlike most of Italy. The area is con-nected to Florence by a 3 mile long park, Le Cascine. The area has “7 poles” run-ning north/south to the arno (river) connected by the road “via longitudinale” . The challenge was to develop an urban plan for the il laghetti (lake) pole. The program included an elementary school, gym, 16 town homes, and a co-housing/co-working area. A partner and I developed the urban plan and individ-ually developed the hous-ing projects for the site.

Co-housing is a concept that is becoming of more interest in Europe due to the failure of social housing. Es-sentially two or more families share a living space, but are provided with a small per-sonal space also. Sincethe project is still consid-ered low-income, how many square meters per a person is limited. This co-housing/co-working project was designed with views, lighting, privacy, and urban context in mind. The project was brocken into seperate units to allow an open passage between build-ings for a defined edge but connection to the street. The corriders become the verti-cal circulation to the private units while the ground floor stays public as the co-work-ing units.

This small shop located on an open site in an industrial section of bir-mingham is meant to be as efficient as possible while still having space. The goal of the project was to furthur develop our design, structure, mechanical and lighting systems. The structure is a puzzle of tilt-up walls with insulation and small metal frame at-tachments. The program included a shop area, engine room, carbon fiberglass room, office area, bath, and de-tached woodshop. The site included a moto-cross track.

Montgomery Housing Units

The site is located in a long and rather narrow historic building in the middle of downtown Mont-gomery, AL. The building connects directly to The Alley, a new devel-opment to bring people to down-town Montgomery. The ground floor of the building is to be a childrens museum and the top two floors are for residential units.

The challenge of the project was to bring light into all the units. The party walls were not to be punc-tured and the facade windows could not be moved either. This design created a large courtyard space with a catwalk from each egrees. Each unit had their own personal balcony, either in the courtyard or to the street or alley and the large courtyard space to congre-gate. Each unit was unique due to the small scale of the project and designing to recieve light in every unit.

Columbus Science and History Museum

The site is located in Columbus, GA a block away from Broadway Avenue, the main street of downtown. The site is lo-cated next to the river with only a large grassy area splitting the two. The site is also right next to the industrial area of Colmubus that is being revived with conversion to lofts.

This architectural proposal aims to mediate between the urban fabric of Broadway and the industrial fabric of Front street with the expected green space before the river. The exhibition spaces provide spaces abundant with natural light or controlled with artificial light and the shadows of the exhibitions are meant to draw citizens in. The large area also provides spaces for commu-nity activities such as a farmers market on the corner of Front Street and 14th. The architectural roof is meant to echo the various roof heights of downtown and to mediate between the city and park.

Sculptor’s Studio

Sculptor’s Studio

The site for this studio was on a small pond in the woods of Auburn, Alabama. There was a small steep incline with a small plot of land before the pond edge with a trail running around the pond.

The design of the studio came about mainly form first which seemed appropriate for a sculptor. The building is mainly two inter-locking shapes, one for the studio and one for living. The two shapes meet with a skylight at the top and the entry on the ground. The stu-dio looks over the pond with large doors opening to a small area be-fore the ponds edge. The living space houses a small kitchen and a loft for the restroom and sleeping area. The square footage is rather small, but efficient for a studio get-away.

Lakeview District Birmingham, Alabama

Page 25: miles, allison_5

The Lakeview District was an urban planning project within the urban studio at auburn. We looked at the assest and potential of the district and designed a plan for the near and long term for the dis-trict to go by. We showed the clients in various public meet-ings through maps and eleva-tions. We did many analysis’s on the district before resolving to the proposed plan which we presented to about 80 mem-bers of the community. I personally developed the connectivity plan to the right and drew the next two spreads of elevations.

Mixed Use in Chicago

The site was located in the upper north side neighborhood of Chicago, a very upscale area. The program was retail, a public venue, a healthcenter and about 40 residential units.

On rush street there is a dis-tinguished relationship be-tween the scale of the build-ings and the people in the park. This project tries to keep that human scale while still creating a rather large pro-gram. There is a visual band that runs continuously from bottom to top interlocking the programs at each level and bending to create balconies where needed. Also to encour-age the human scale a plaza was designed to bring people around the corner and into the building. It is an area for overflow of restaurants, bars, and the performance venue. A different atmosphere than the park.
