New software release strategyWe have introduced a new software release strategy, where bug fixes will be separated from new features. Now, you will be able to upgrade RouterOS without adding any new features, just the most important fixes.

Starting from v6.31 you are able to select a release “branch” in the quickset upgrae menu and web download site. The choices are “Bugfix only”, “Current” and “Release candidate”. Bugfix only will only contain verified fixes, and no new features. Any version can be chosen to be a bugfix version, it is not indicated by the version number, but RouterOS will show the version type (starting v6.33).

The Current release contains the same fixes but also new features and other improvements, sometimes also less critical fixes than in Bugfix. And finally the Release Candidate is more likely to a nightly build. We will not do intensive testing before publishing these, only check if the upgrade can be done and if most features work fine.

The graphic illustrates an example release flow in all these branches.

New wAP Access PointsThe wAP (wall access point) is a small weatherproof wireless access point for your mobile devices, perfect for installation outside your house, in the garden, on your porch or anywhere else where you need wireless access from your phone or computer.

It can be mounted on a ceiling, wall or a pole, as you prefer. Everything is included - drill template, plastic ties, screws and screw anchors. The cable can be routed through the wall through the breakout on the back of the case, to make your installation look clean and inconspicuous.

The wAP can also be securely closed, so that only the installer can open it using the provided special screwdriver. Since the unit is attached from the inside of the case, this makes your

device safe to use in public locations.

The device has one 10/100 Ethernet port and can be mounted on a wall to provide basic internet access in any location. It

looks unobtrusive and sleek, available in two colours - black (RBwAP2nD-BE) or white (RBwAP2nD).

We are releasing a test version of an exciting new feature - Cloud Hosted Router (CHR).

It is a Virtual Machine image of RouterOS that has full functionality of RouterOS without any kind of conventional RouterOS license, with the limitation of 1Mbit per interface, in future, we will offer unlimited speed with a perpetual license or subscription. This allows you to use RouterOS in training classes, for testing, for experimentation or any other purpose, without the need for a 24h trial or a Demo license.

WPS button

The familiar and popular RB750 just got a whole lot better, bringing improved design, more RAM, faster CPU and better throughput at the same affordable price and a new name - hEX lite!

Its price is lower than the RouterOS license alone - there simply is no choice when it comes to managing your wired home network, the hEX lite has it all.

Not only it’s affordable, small, good looking and easy to use - It’s probably the most affordable MPLS capable router on the market! Combined with our latest RouterOS version it will provide unprecedented 850MHz CPU with ability to overclock it up to 1GHz. No more compromise between price and features - hEX lite has both. With its compact design and clean looks, it will fit perfectly into any SOHO environment.

Box contains: hEX lite in a plastic case and power supply.

Starting from RouterOS v6.25 you can now use WPS (WiFi protected setup) in your RouterBOARD device for convenient guest access. The next time your guests attempt to connect to your AP, just ask them to select the WPS option, and click “WPS accept” in Quickset, or push the Reset button on the device. Since RouterOS only supports the WPS “button mode”, this is a secure and simple way to allow any wireless device to connect, without the need to type anything. Just push the button and the client will be granted access. WPS is supported by most operating systems, including Android on your phone. The wireless-cm2 package is required for the WPS mode functionality.

RoMON

EoIP 15th anniversary and a new encryption feature

RoMON, or Router Management Overlay Network, is a new feature that we have added to RouterOS v6.xx. This feature allows to discover devices over multiple hops, similar to how MikroTik Neighbor Discovery works.

The RoMON network operates independent from L2 or L3 forwarding configuration, so you can discover what RouterOS devices are located inside networks that previously were not directly accessible. By enabling RoMON on all your RouterOS devices, you can manage devices no matter what the routing configuration is in your network.

You can not only discover these devices, you can also ping them, SSH to them, and connect to them with Winbox - without the need for tunnels, NAT or special routing rules.

RoMON uses a MikroTik Proprietary protocol and supports only Wireless and Ethernet like interfaces.

RoMON enabled devices establishes a independent MAC layer peer discovery and data forwarding protocol. Communication is based on the RoMON ID which is taken from the first MAC address of the board, this ID can also be changed. For security, a special “secret” can be set.

To start discovering RouterOS devices beyond your network, simply enable RoMON in all RouterOS devices - this is done in the “tool romon” menu. Then, use Winbox v3 to connect to your nearest RoMON router and start discovering. Read more: http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:RoMON

One of the most popular protocols made by Mikrotik - EoIP (Ethernet over IP) was created by Mikrotik fifteen years ago this year. First publicly released in September 2000 with RouterOS v2.1 beta, this protocol was created to simplify bridging of Ethernet networks and connecting remote locations into a single network, by creating a tunnel on top of an IP connection.

When the bridging function of the router is enabled, all Ethernet frames (all Ethernet protocols) will be bridged just as if there were a physical Ethernet interface and cable between the two routers (with bridging enabled). This protocol makes multiple network schemes possible.

The EoIP protocol encapsulates Ethernet frames in GRE (IP protocol number 47) packets (just like PPTP) and sends them to the remote side of the EoIP tunnel.

The first EoIP documentation page was created a little later in January, 2000. EoIP is still very popular today, and is supported by all RouterBOARD devices by default.

To celebrate the 15th anniversary of EoIP, Mikrotik is adding keyphrase encryption support. Simply add a keyphrase to the configuration of each EoIP interface and all traffic over the tunnel will be encrypted using IPsec. With the addition of encryption, the protocol is still simple, robust, and easy to use.

FastTrack -- Up to 890Mb/s NAT on RB2011 WANNew fasttrack feature supports single stream tcp up to 900Mb/s NAT/mangle on WAN port

FastTrack is implemented as a new action for firewall filter/mangle - “fasttrack-connection”. This provides the flexibility necessary for users to combine any existing firewall implementation with the new FastTrack feature.

The “action=fasttrack-connection” works similar to “action=mark-connection” - it flags connection tracking entries so that following packets from these entries can be “FastTracked”.

In current implementation FastTrack can work with IPv4/TCP and IPv4/UDP connection tracking entries.

Even in the “FastTracked” connections some packets will still go the regular path to maintain connection tracking table integrity (to refresh timeouts, update connection states and more), but as you can see in the picture on the right - it is only a few percent of total number of packets

Real-life exampleBoard: RB2011UiAS-2HnDConfiguration: factory default (Home AP mode in QuickSet with firewall and masquerade)Traffic: With any TCP/UDP traffic (test below performed with single TCP stream)

Before FastTrack

• 360Mbps throughput and CPU @100%• 44% of CPU time was taken by firewall

After FastTrack

• 890Mbps throughput and CPU @86% • 6% of CPU time was taken by firewall

In this example FastTrack allows us to use all firewall features, but at ~1/20 of CPU resource cost, leaving you with free CPU resources to get more throughput or use elsewhere in configuration.

We do plan to add FastTrack to factory-default configuration for devices that come with NAT and firewall.

Many new RouterBOARD devices are equipped with PoE out support on at least one of the Ethernet ports. This is indicaded by the “i” letter in the product name, for example “RB2011Ui” has PoE out on the last port.

This feature is for providing power to another RouterBOARD. For example, you can power a SXT device that is used to connect to your ISP wirelessly. If for some reason you need to power cycle the device, RouterOS offers some new features, like power monitoring and power cycle for any number of seconds. This is to avoid you being disconnected, if you are connected over the PoE out port.

Protected RouterBOOTStarting from RouterOS v6.26, we are now offering a new feature for securing your RouterBOARD device. What this feature does is it disables the reset button and jumper on your RouterBOARD, and also turns off the console access, so the booting mode can no longer be changed to Ethernet, or run Netinstall.

The only way you will be able to change routerboot configuration is through RouterOS. If you forget the password, complete reformat of the NAND and RAM will be required, initiated by a special procedure. This is to ensure that even if somebody gains physical addess to your device, he can’t access the device by serial cable or by changing boot mode with the button.

Winbox 3 release candidateDue to popular demand we are introducing a big upgrade to our GUI configuration method - Winbox. The new version includes some long requested features and even new ones.

The new Winbox can now remember all of your settings and layouts in each router, or use your favorite layout for other routers too - you only need to see Firewall Filter with a specific set of columns? No problem, save this session and then use it whenever connecting to any router.

Another great feature is the ability to group saved routers into groups by location or list (as you prefer). You can also sort them by address, username, session, group, note and even model name. If your list is huge - search and filter are also available. And what would such management possibilities be without ability to have this on multiple computers? This file is easily transferable and can even be used in Dropbox, so you can have synchronized router lists in all your computers.

We have also added a global “inline comments” setting, so that all rule lists can have the comments inside it’s own column, not under each rule. This also makes it possible to sort by comment. And of course, this setting is remembered between sessions.

Winbox 3 is also very secure. To protect your router list, you can set up a “Master password” which will encrypt the winbox database file.

• Remembers all layout details between sessions

• Inline comments global setting• Winbox loader can self upgrade • Choose any of the saved sessions

when connecting to a router• Group, filter and sort saved routers• Set up master password to encrypt

router database• Move database to Dropbox or copy to a

different PC• Import or export database to Winbox 2

Radome for mANT

FTC

RB911G-5HPacD

Here is a video from our SXT ac test, which we performed in our anechoic wireless test chamber, to rule out all outside influence factors. This shows the capabilities of the 802.11ac technology in the SXT units. The test was done on default configuration, with 80MHz ac channels, on a distance of 5 meters. Since the signal was too strong, the result could even be slightly better at bigger distances.
