UC DAVIS IS A PROUD MEMBER OF THE BIG SKY CONFERENCE Gm. 10 - at Montana State OPENING KICKOFF • UC Davis hits the road for the final time this season trying to pick up its first 2016 win away (0-5) from Aggie Stadium. • The Aggies are also appearing on ROOT Sports television for the second time this year (EWU was the other)... They’ve been part of the network’s Big Sky game-of-the-week television package every year since joining the league in 2012. • UC Davis is looking to rebound after giving up its highest yardage total (602) since facing Eastern Washington (627) on Oct. 1... Since then, it held down Southern Utah (260), Northern Col- orado (269) and Cal Poly (364) well below their offensive averages before playing the Vikings. • The Aggies, conversely, hope to continue rushing the ball like they did against the Vikings after gaining 190 yards (2nd-highest in 2016) while averaging 5.6 yards per carry. • RB MANUSAMOA LUUGA (812 yds) needs 188 yards for his first career 1,000-yard rushing season and the program’s first since RB GABE MANZANARES had 1,285 in 2013... Luuga, whose yards are fourth-most in the Big Sky and 22nd nationally, is averaging 90.2 yog. • He’s also looking to get back on the receiving end of a pass after having his streak of 22 games with at least one catch snapped last weekend. • FB ETHAN HICKS recovered a fourth-quarter onside kick against Portland State, the Aggies’ first onsides try this year. • QB C.J. SPENCER made his first appearance since suffering a knee injury against Southern Oregon in the only play he played in that game... He threw for a TD and ran in another during the fourth quarter on Saturday. • LB RYAN BUA has 27 tackles, including 1.5 sacks, since making his season debut against four games ago... His stops are the Aggies’ most during that span... Bua had an 11-yard sack on Saturday among his eight tackles. • UC Davis was 7 for 16 (.438) on third down, its best success rate of the year... Its seven conver- sions tied a season-high, also done at Oregon. • Freshman WR JARED HARRELL had his first 2 TD receptions as an Aggie, catching an 11-yarder from QB BEN SCOTT in the first quarter and a 14-yard grab from Spencer in the fourth. • The Aggies last went winless on the road in 2008 when they were 0-6... Overall, UC Davis had a 5-7 overall record. • SS DARRYL GRAHAM was penalized and ejected for targeting in the fourth quarter… By NCAA rule, he will have to sit out the first half of Saturday’s game at Montana State. ALL-TIME SERIES• Montana State leads, 4-1… The Bobcats have

won four straight in the series and are 2-1 against the Aggies at Bobcat Stadium.• UC Davis’ only win came in 2006 in the first-ev-

er series matchup when the Aggies’ upset No. 20 Montana State, 45-0… QB JON GRANT threw for 324 yards and 5 TDs in that win while WR TONY KAYS had 10 receptions for 143 yards... It was the third of five straight road games that saw the Ag-gies play at least one game in each of the Pacific, Mountain, Central and Eastern timezones while covering nearly 11,000 miles to start the year.

TFL PARADE LED BY ZAK PETTIT• DE ZACK PETTIT entered the 2016 season with

12 career TFLs but through nine games has nearly equaled that total.• He has a team-high 9.0 this year and has at

least a 0.5 TFL in every game except the opener at Oregon and last weekend’s matchup versus Portland State... Pettit had 3.0 TFLs for 14 yards at Wyoming and 2.0 for 10 yards against Northern Colorado.• DE ANTHONY BAUMGART is second on the

team with 6.5... He’s come on strong 4.5 TFLs over his last four games. (more on him below)

DEFENSE FINDS TRIO OF TDs• The Aggies have scored three defensive

touchdowns in 2016, ranking them T-1st in the Big Sky (with Montana and NAU) and T-9th in the FCS.• FS KELEEN CULBERSON returned a fumble 21

yards at Wyoming, CB ISIAH OLAVE’s 11-yard pick-6 sealed the win over Northern Colorado, and DE ANTHONY BAUMGART opened the scoring at Cal Poly with a 61-yard TD off a fumble return.• UC Davis has more than one defensive touch-

down in a season for the first time since picking up two in 2007. (interceptions by FS JONATHAN BARSI, LB DAVID HECKMAN and fumble recovery by CB JEREMY SCOTT).

SCOTT POSTS PAIR OF 300-YARDERS• QB BEN SCOTT opened the 2016 season with

back-to-back 300-yard games, giving him four for his career... He went 27-47-1 for 303 at Oregon and then 22-29-0 for a career-high 381 against Southern Oregon.• His 1,792 yards this season are a career-high,

eclipsing the 1,734 he posted in 2014.• Scott was held to just eight completions last

weekend against Portland State; his lowest total as a starter.• Among active FCS quarterbacks, Scott is 8th in

completion percentage (.623), 10th in completions per game (19.4), 13th in passing ypg. (222.8) and 24th in passing efficiency (135.5).

INTERCEPTION DROUGHT• The Aggies had four interceptions against

Southern Oregon on Sept. 10, surpassing the three they had all of last year... They added two more against Weber State but since then have just one over their last five games (CB ISIAH OLAVE’s 11-yarder for a late TD against UNC).• UC Davis has 13 takeaways this season, better-

ing the 11 they had last season, and are still in in the black in turnover margin (0.22), ranking fifth in the Big Sky and 51st nationally.• Last week’s game against Portland State

marked just the second time this year the Aggies have not gained a turnover. (SUU was the other)

Bobcats Schedule

UC DAVIS IS A PROUD MEMBER OF THE BIG SKY CONFERENCEGm. 10 - at Montana State

YOUTH ANESI LEADS LB CORPS• Head coach RON GOULD noted earlier this

year he thought LB NAS ANESI had one of the best set of spring practices of all the Aggies, and Anesi isn’t disappointing this fall.• The redshirt freshman is currently second on

the team with 48 total tackles, despite missing the opener at Oregon, had a team-best and career-high nine stops (7 solo) against Portland State and has 22 total tackles over his last three games.• Anesi has added 3.5 TFLs for 14 yards, includ-

ing a 9-yard sack at Southern Utah, and has a quarterback-hurry for good measure.

BAUMGART BREAKING OUT• DE ANTHONY BAUMGART, from nearby Ante-

lope HS, is making the most out of his first year as a starter... The Aggie sophomore entered the year with six games of experience but no tackles to show for it.• This year, he’s been one of the most consistent

players on the defensive side of the ball, contrib-uting 39 total tackles (T-4th on team), including eight against Southern Oregon and six at Eastern Washington.• Additionally, his 6.5 TFLs, highlighted by at

least one of the last four games (4.5 for 29 yards in that span), are second-most behind DE ZAK PETTIT.• Baumgart is also second on the team with a

pair of sacks, gaining one each against Southern Utah and Northern Colorado for 19 total yards.• Beyond those numbers, though, he has also

pitched in with two other big plays, picking off a pass against Southern Oregon that he returned 15 yards, and then scooping up a first-quarter missed tackle at Cal Poly that he returned 61 yards for a score.

DOSS SOARS OVER 100-YARDS 2X• WR KEELAN DOSS already has a pair of

100-yard receiving games this season, picking up career-high 116 yards against Oregon in the season opener and then adding 104 at Wyoming two weeks later... Both came on seven catches.• Combined with WR RAMON VARGAS’ 208-

yard effort against Southern Oregon, Doss’ ex-ploits helped give UC Davis five straight 100-yard games dating back to last season... However, they have not had once since although Doss had four grabs for 91 yards and a TD last weekend.• Doss is a redshirt sophomore after missing last

season with injury but is showing why he was a dangerous target (22-325, 2 TDs, long of 70) as a true freshman in 2014... He leads UC Davis with 52 catches for 649 yards and 6 TDs this season... Doss has 30 more grabs than the next closest Aggie.• He’s ranked among the top 50 FCS players in

rec. TDs (37th, 6), rec. yds. (48th, 649) and rec/game (32nd, 5.8).

TEAM CAPTAINS• OL CHRISTIAN SCHNEIDER, RB MANUSAMOA

LUUGA, DT INOKE RAIKADROKA, LB RUSSELL REEDER... When injuries keep one of the season captains out of a game, substitute captains are selected by the coaching staff.

BLAIR EARNS POW HONOR • Freshman K MATT BLAIR was named the

ARP CONTINUES GAME STREAK• FRED ARP was an assistant coach with the

Aggies for more than 40 years before retiring at the end of the 2007 season... His accomplish-ments as defensive line coach and his reverance from the players he coached helped lead to his eventual enshrinement in the Cal Aggie Athletics Hall of Fame.• He has been a constant on the sidelines as

a coach and as a program alum... This week’s game against Portland State will mark the 441st consecutive UC Davis game he has witnessed... Now, THAT’s a streak.

RECRUITING CLASSES RANK HIGH• HEAD COACH RON GOULD was regarded as

one of the nation’s top recruiters during his long tenure at Cal and he’s brought that prowess to UC Davis.• His most recent recruiting class this past Febru-

ary was ranked No. 10 among all FCS and tops in the Big Sky by Saturday Blitz, and was No. 17 by Hero Sports (third in the Big Sky).• Gould’s 2014 class was comprised of 12 players

rated two stars by Scout.com.

GETTING IT DONE IN THE CLASSROOM• The Aggies posted an NCAA Academic Prog-

ress Rate of 981 to lead the Big Sky Conference for the fourth consecutive year... The distinction earned them an APR Award from the FCS Ath-letics Directors Association for the fourth straight year.• UC Davis has increased its APR each year

during the impressive run and owns the sec-ond-longest active streak of APR Awards. (Bryant University has won five straight).• The APR measures student-athlete retention

and eligibility and helps provide a real-time mark of classroom performance.• The Aggies also had an NCAA graduation suc-

cess rate of 83 percent in the most recent report, marking the second straight year they’ve led the Big Sky in that measurement as well... For the re-cord, the entire UC Davis athletics program had a graduation rate of 88 percent... The program has led the Big West four straight years and seven of eight since reclassifying to Div. I in 2007-08.

ROOT FOR THE AGGIES AGAIN• UC Davis is featured on ROOT SPORTS in

2016 for the fifth consecutive year as part of the DirecTV regional network’s partnership with the Big Sky... In all, 10 league games are being show-cased throughout the 2016 season. • The Aggies traveled to Eastern Washington

earlier this year and are at Montana State next week as part of the package... This is the first year since joining the Big Sky that UC Davis will not host a game that appears on ROOT Sports.

COMING UP NEXT• UC Davis will finish the 2016 season next week

when it hosts the 63rd annual Causeway Classic at 1 p.m. at Aggie Stadium against rival Sacramen-to State.• The Aggies won last year’s game, 35-21, and

will be looking to improve upon the 44-18 all-time Causeway lead (44-19 when including their one playoff showdown in 1988).• The Hornets won the last meeting at Aggie

Stadium, 41-30, in 2014.• UC Davis was won five of the last six games

and is 2-2 against the Hornets at Aggie Stadium.

RON GOULD Head Coach4th year11-32 (UC Davis)11-32 (Career)

A 16-year veteran of the California Golden Bears’ coaching staff, Ron Gould became just the 16th head coach in the 100-year history of UC Davis football when he was named to the Aggies’ top position on Dec. 17, 2012. He replaced Bob Biggs who finished his 20-year career as head coach following the 2012 season.

Gould’s short tenure with the Aggies has been marked by highly respect-ed recruiting classes, high academic achievements by his team and two wins in the Causeway Classic against rival Sacramento State.

One of the most highly regarded running back coaches in the country, Gould has mentored some of the top runners in the game. In fact, the last three Super Bowl winners have each had one of his proteges: C.J. Anderson (Denver Broncos), Shane Vereen (New England Patriots) and Marshawn Lynch (Seattle Seahawks). Additionally, Jahvid Best, who played for the Detroit Lions before retiring from the NFL, showcased his speed this summer in the Rio de Janeiro Olympics while competing in the 100-meters for Saint Lucia.

Recruiting is the cornerstone to every successful football program and Gould has already established himself as one of the top recruiters at the Football Championship Subdivision level after earning similar respect while at the Football Bowl Subdivision level at Cal.

That was evidenced by his most recent recruiting class in 2016, which was ranked No. 10 among all FCS teams (and tops in the Big Sky Conference) by Saturday Blitz, and No. 17 by Hero Sports (third-highest in the Big Sky). That came two years after his 15-player 2014 class was comprised of 12 players rated two stars by Scout.com.

While his leadership in recruiting is helping to establish an exciting future, his emphasis on academic achievement has yielded similar results in two measurements by the NCAA: Academic Progress Rate (APR) and Graduation Success Rate (GSR). For the past four years, UC Davis has led the Big Sky in APR. It’s the second-longest active streak in the FCS. The Aggies also had a GSR of 83 percent in the most recent data released by the NCAA, marking the second straight year they’ve led the Big Sky in that area.

On the field, UC Davis has put together one of the most disciplined teams in the FCS. In 2015, the Aggies ranked third nationally in fewest penalties (45), fewest penalties per game (4.09), fewest penalty yards (382) and fewest penalty yards per game (34.7). Additionally, ball control moving the ball close to the goal line were strengths for UC Davis, which was ranked second in time of possession (34:37) and tied for fifth in red-zone efficiency (.906).

Gould’s first season with the Aggies produced a tie for fourth place in the powerful Big Sky Conference, a run of five victories over UC Davis’ final eight games, and a convincing 34-7 win over rival Sacramento State in Gould’s first Causeway Classic. He highlighted his second year by reclaiming the Golden Horseshoe with a 48-35 win over rival Cal Poly.

Gould, 50, joined the Aggies after an impressive career Cal where he developed several of college football’s top tailbacks over the past decade, a list that includes NFL players Lynch (Seattle Seahawks), Best (Detroit Lions), Vereen (New England Patriots), Justin Forsett (Houston Texans) and Will Ta’ufo’ou (Jacksonville Jaguars). Other players who got their start with Gould and later signed NFL contracts include Chris Manderino (Cincinnnati) and Tarik Smith (Dallas Cowboys).

He didn’t take long to place his stamp on the UC Davis running backs, helping guide transfer Gabe Manzanares to the program’s best rushing total (1,285 yards) in more than a decade in 2013.

Manzanares went on to win Big Sky Newcomer of the Year honors while ranking among the conference and NCAA Div. I FCS leaders in several sta-tistical categories. Manzanared was named to the All-Big Sky third team in 2014 while finishing with 2,116 career yards in just two seasons.

GAME 1: No. 24/22 Oregon 53, UC Davis 28 Sept. 3 • Autzen Stadium (Eugene, Ore.) • Attendance: 53,817

GAME STATISTICSUC Davis held strong against No. 24/22 Oregon during the first quarter of their season-opening matchup at Autzen Stadium on and then played tough the rest of the way before the Ducks post-ed a 53-28 win before 53,817 fans.

Senior Ben Scott threw for 303 yards and ran for a 9-yard touch-down that gave the Aggies an early 7-0 lead. Senior Manusamoa Luuga put a workman-like effort together, rushing for 96 yards and three touchdowns and catching four passes for 51 more.

Sophomore Keelan Doss, returning to the Aggies’ lineup after redshirting last year because of injury, caught seven passes for 116 yards, including a long 50-yarder from Scott on UC Davis’ first play of the second half that preceded a 20-yard TD run by Luuga.

UC Davis rolled up 392 yards in total offense, had three sec-ond-half scoring drives of at least 65 yards and held the ball for

more than 37 minutes. The Aggies’ special teams picked up a pair of turnovers, including a fumble that led to their first touchdown.

Dakota Prukop, who transferred to Oregon from Montana State, threw for 271 yards and three touch-downs while Royce Freeman’s 87 rushing yards and two scores led the Ducks’ 251-yard ground attack. Darren Carrington had 117 receiv-ing yards and a touchdown on seven catches. UC Davis sacked Prukop three times.

UC Davis was not intimidated against one of the more storied

programs of the past 30 years. After being stopped on its opening drive, the Aggies got the game’s first break when Charles Nelson fumbled Wadman’s 37-yard punt and Darryl Graham fell on it at the 33-yard line.

Facing a 3rd-and-8, UC Davis got down to the 4 when Scott hit freshman Jared Harrell for a 27-yard pass play. A penalty pushed the Aggies back to the 9 but Scott rolled right on the next play before scampering up the middle for his second career TD run.

The Ducks’ had quick strike to start the third quarter, keyed by Freeman’s 49-yard run to the 1-yard line, preceded Prukop’s TD rush and made it 33-7 as Oregon capped 33 straight points.

Luuga capped two long drives with a pair of 1-yard touchdowns. The first came at the end of an 11-play, 65-yard drive in the third quarter while the second put an exclamation point on an 8-play, 75-yard drive in the fourth.

Freeman scored from five yards, Darren Carrington caught a 55-yard TD pass from Prukop and Tony Brooks-James ran in from 33 yards for the Ducks’ remaining scores after halftime.

Safety Ryan Parenteau had eight tackles for the Aggies’ de-fense while Zach Jones, Darryl Graham and Russell Reeder each had seven. Parenteau and Jones each forced fumbles while Gra-ham had a fumble recovery.

Reeder, Keleen Culberson and Brandon Jamison each had sacks. Scott was only sacked twice, including just once after the opening play of the game.

UC Davis did not have any fumbles while Oregon had three, two which they lost.

GAME 2: UC Davis 52, Southern Oregon 35 Sept. 10 • Aggie Stadium (Davis, Calif.) • Attendance: 5,433

GAME STATISTICSQuarterback Ben Scott threw for a career-high 381 yards and four touchdowns, Ramon Vargas had 208 receiving yards and Manusamoa Luuga had a 90-yard touchdown run as UC Davis beat Southern Oregon in a nonconference football game.

The teams combined for 1,260 yards of total offense; 653 for Southern Oregon an 617 for the Aggies. UC Davis, which tied its highest scoring output since tallying 55 against Iona in 2008, went over 600 yards for the first time since 2014 against Montana State (610).

Scott finished 22 of 29 while throwing touchdown passes to Keelan Doss, Nehemiah Winston, Ethan Hicks and a 65-yarder to Vargas. His 381 yards eclipsed the 379 he had in his first start against Montana State two years ago.

Vargas’ receiving yards are the fourth-most in school histo-ry and marked the first 200-yard game for an Aggie receiver since Tony Kay’s school-record 233 yards against Texas A&M-Kingsville in the 2001 NCAA Div. II playoffs.

Luuga had 13 carries for 145 yards, highlighted by his 90-yard TD run late in the first quarter that gave UC Davis a 21-14 lead. The long run is tied for the second-lon-gest in program history and tied Joe Trombetta’s 90-yarder against Western Washington in 2007 as the longest at Aggie Stadium.

Defensive end Anthony Baumgart had eight tackles, 2 TFLs

and an interception to help lead the defense while linebacker Zach Jones had five tackles. UC Davis had four interceptions against Southern Oregon, eclipsing the three it had all of last year. Safeties Darryl Graham, Mitch Casas and Ryan Parenteau also had picks.

The Aggies erupted for 21 points in the first quarter and 35 by halftime. Their first-half scoring was their best since 38 against Win-ston-Salem State in 2009.

Luuga then electrified the 5,433 fans in attendance when he bolted through the line with a minute to go in the first and raced 90 yards for his career-best run. That surpassed his previous best of 46 yards against Nevada on his first collegiate rush in 2013.

Tied at 21-21 after Rey Vega raced 48 yards with 9:13 left in the first half for Southern Oregon, UC Davis took the lead for good when Scott threw it up at the left endzone pylon and Doss came down with it in traffic for the score. Luuga’s run up the gut for 13 yards with 4:59 to go gave the Aggies a 35-21 halftime lead.

.UC Davis took a 21-point lead midway through the third quarter

when Vargas got behind the defense and Scott found him for a 65-yard score. It was the longest reception of his career, beating the 58-yarder he hauled in from Scott against Montana in 2014.

Freshman Matt Blair gave the Aggies their biggest lead of the game with his first career field goal from 29 yards. Fullback Ethan Hick’s four-yard TD catch from Scott early in the fourth quarter – the first of his young Aggie career – rounded out UC Davis’ scor-ing.

Besides their four interceptions, UC Davis also broke up four passes and had 8 TFLs. Half of Baumgart’s eight total tackles were solo stops. He returned his interception 15 yards.

UC DAVIS IS A PROUD MEMBER OF THE BIG SKY CONFERENCEGm. 10 - at Montana State

Receiver Keelan Doss posted his second 100-yard receiving game of the season and Keleen Culberson returned a fumble 21 yards for a score but Wyoming used two quick touchdowns for an early 14-0 lead lead en route to a nonconference football win over UC Davis.

Doss caught seven passes for 104 yards and a touchdown, quarterback Ben Scott threw for 178 yards and Joshua Kelley rushed for a team-high 46 yards. The Aggies, though, were held to just 255 total yards after racking up 617 in last week’s win over Southern Oregon.

Senior Luke Williams caught a 3-yard TD pass from backup quarterback Brock Dale late in the game, freshman Matt Blair had a 41-yard field goal and defensive end Zak Pettit had a game-high nine tackles, including 3 TFLs. One of the latter was a sack that

resulted in a forced fumble against Cowboys quarterback Josh Allen and led to Culberson’s score.Trail-ing 35-9 going into the third quar-ter, UC Davis came out and put to-gether its best drive of the game. Scott found Doss for an 18-yard gain to midfield and then hit tight end Nehemiah Winston down the left sideline after he broke free and was wide open. That set UC Davis up at the Wyoming 25 and two plays later Scott found Doss again, this time right at the endzone pylon for a spectacular 25-yard score.

Wyoming was in control to that point after its quick start. Down 14-0, UC Davis got on the score-board late in the first when Blair capped a 13-play, 57-yard drive. That came after the Aggies had gone three-and-out on their first two drives, totaling just two yards.

Culberson picked up his touchdown with an assist from Pet-tit on the Cowboys’ next possession after Blair’s field goal. Allen was forced out of the pocket by Pettit, who spun him around and caused him to lose the ball. It flew right in the hands of Culber-son who raced untouched 21 yards for the score. The Aggies got to within 14-9 after that big play, which also produced UC Davis’ eighth takeaway of the year

Wyoming scored twice in the third quarter, the first time coming on Allen’s 3-yard TD run around the right side with 4:52 left in the quarter. The Cowboys’ Carl Granderson then sacked Scott, forcing a fumble that Wyoming recovered and later turned into a 21-yard field goal byCooper Rothe with 27 seconds to go.

Scott went down with an injury late in the game and was re-placed by Dale who pushed UC Davis near the goal line and then found Williams for the short TD pass.

Besides his rushing, Kelley returned three kickoffs for 104 yards, including one for 55. Scott finished 18 of 31 for 178 yards and a touchdown. Culberson had eight tackles while linebacker Brady Stibi finished with seven stops. Doss also went over 100 yards re-ceiving against Oregon.

UC DAVIS IS A PROUD MEMBER OF THE BIG SKY CONFERENCEGm. 10 - at Montana State

Joshua Kelley had a 91-yard kickoff return for a score and Luke Williams made a spectacular 14-yard TD catch during UC Davis’ furious fourth-quarter rally that tied its Big Sky opener with Weber State, but the Wildcats took advantage of a late Aggie turnover to post a win on Taylor Hintze’s 35-yard field goal as time expired.

The Aggies trailed 35-20 after Hintze’s 37-yard field goal with 7:19 remaining but then scored on Kelley’s and Williams’ heroics to knot the game with 1:35 to go. The Aggie defense then forced the Wildcats to punt for the third consecutive series but Isiah Olave was hit on the return by linebacker Landon Stice and the resulting fumble was recovered by Weber State at the UC Davis 23.

Clark rushed to the 18, spiked the ball on the next play and Hintze came in and converted his third field goal of the game to deliver the Wildcats the wild win. It was disappointing ending after

a strong UC Davis finish.UC Davis led 10-8 late in the

first quarter after freshman Matt Blair drilled a career-best 48-yard field goal but Weber State rattled off 22 straight points to take a 32-10 lead early in the third quarter. Clark hit Darry Denby for a 34-yard score and Andrew Vollert from 22 yards in the second quarter before Hintz kicked a 54-yard field goal to end the first half. Garrett scored from three yards on Weber State’s opening drive of the second half to give the Wildcats their biggest lead.

But Keelan Doss, who caught seven passes for 91 yards, fol-lowed Blair’s 27-yard field goal in the third quarter with an eight-yard touchdown pass from backup quarterback Brock Dale early in the fourth. Dale had temporarily replaced Scott because of an injury.

Hintze’s second field goal with just over seven minutes to go was followed by Kelley’s electrifying return up the right sideline. He took the ball at the 9, cut to the outside and then outran the cover-age for the Aggies’ first TD kick return in two years, the third-lon-gest kick return for a score in school history and the fifth-longest kick return overall.

The teams traded punts before the Aggies forced another with 2:31 to go that gave them the ball at their own 33. Scott and Wil-liams then went to work. Scott hit Williams on a crossing pattern for a 40-yard gain on the first play and then followed with a 13-yard pass to Williams that put the ball on the 14. But the duo saved their best for the next play with Williams making a diving catch while falling out of bounds in the endzone. He was initially ruled out of bounds but the call was overturned on review and UC Davis picked up the touchdown. Scott then hit Martin on a short pass for the two-point conversion.

The Aggie defense, which held Weber State to just 57 yards in the fourth quarter, then held again and the Wildcats had to punt from their own 34 with less than 25 seconds remaining. Olave took Jacob DeMaio’s 43-yard punt at his own 23 and was met by Stice who jarred the ball free. It was recovered by Tre’von Johnson and three plays later Weber State had the win.

Manusamoa Luuga rushed for a career-high 160 yards and scored three touchdowns, and UC Davis tallied 23 unanswered points to stun No. 4/5 Eastern Washington in the first half, but the Eagles answered with a big second half en route to a Big Sky win.

All-America wide receiver Cooper Kupp had 12 catches for 274 yards and two touchdowns for the Eagles while Quarterback Gage Gubrud threw for 486 yards and six touchdowns.

Eastern Washington scored two quick touchdowns to take an early 14-0 lead before being dominated in the second half by UC Davis, which scored 23 unanswered points for a 23-14 halftime lead. The Eagles, though came back to outscore UC Davis, 35-7, in the third quarter and take control of the game.

The teams combined for 1,042 yards of total offense; 627 from the Eagles and 415 by the Aggies. Luuga’s rushing helped UC Da-

vis post a season-high 247 yards on the ground. Sophomore Joshua Kelley rushed for 95 yards on nine carries, including an exciting 58-yard TD run in the second quarter that got UC Davis on the board af-ter trailing 14-0.

The Aggies allowed just 16 yards to EWU’s high-powered of-fense in that second quarter after giving up 192 in the first. UC Davis punted on its first four possessions but then turned the tables on the Eagles thanks to great defense by recovering a fumble, forcing a safety, and then holding them to

two punts and a missed field goal to close the half.Meanwhile, the offense started clicking on all cylinders with

Luuga scoring his first TD on a two-yard run with 9:20 left in the half and then following with a hard-fought 7-yard TD on a short pass two drives later that made it 23-14.

But like they did in the first half, the Eagles scored two quick touchdowns to get the scoring going in the third quarter. Shaq Hill caught a 17-yard TD from Gubrud and then Gubrud raced in from a yard to make it 28-23. But UC Davis showed quick resiliency with a 5-play, 64-yard drive that was capped by Luuga’s third score, a one-yard plunge that returned the lead to the Aggies.

It’s the second time this season that Luuga has found the end-zone three times after also doing it in the opener at Oregon.

From there, it was all Eastern Washington. Kendrick Bourne had 4-yard touchdown catch, Tamrick Pierce ran in from a yard and then Kupp capped his day with a 71-yard TD reception that made it 49-30. D’Londo Tucker had a 27-yard interception for a score early in the fourth and Hill added another score with a 22-yard catch from Gubrud with 11:16 remaining to round out the scoring.

Zach Jones had 10 tackles and forced a fumble to lead the Aggies’ defense while Isaiah Olave had eight stops. Linebackers Christian Leota and Quincy Bennett added seven tackles while cornerback Vincent White had two of the Aggies’ five pass-break-ups. UC Davis held the Eagles to just 141 rushing yards and an average of 3.9 per carry.

Quarterback Ben Scott threw for 162 yards and a TD but was sacked three times. Luke Williams caught five passes for 52 yards while Keelan Doss and Luuga each caught four.

UC DAVIS IS A PROUD MEMBER OF THE BIG SKY CONFERENCEGm. 10 - at Montana State

The UC Davis defense turned in its best performance of the season, holding Southern Utah to 260 total yards, but the offense wasn’t able to capitalize in the Thunderbirds’ Big Sky football win.

UC Davis played without starting quarterback Ben Scott, who was injured, as well as five other starters, Quarterback Brock Dale completed 23 of 45 passes for 219 yards in his first career start as an Aggie while Joshua Kelley rushed for 62 yards on 12 carries, including a 34-yarder.

Safety Ryan Parenteau, defensive end Anthony Baumgart, safe-ty Delvin Alexander and linebackers Nas Anesi and Ryan Bua each had sacks for the Aggie defense.

Safety Keleen Culberson had a team-high nine tackles, includ-ing eight solo, and broke up a pass. UC Davis forced Southern Utah to punt nine times, six of them coming after three-and-outs.

The Thunderbirds gained just 77 yards on the ground and 183 through the air but were able to take advantage of a big play, a special teams miscue and a long drive to score three touchdowns in the second quarter after neither team started well offensively in the first.

Matt Blair had a 26-yard field in the second quarter as South-ern Utah took a 21-3 lead into the break. Keita Calhoun had a 28-yard field goal in the third quarter for the game’s only scoring after halftime.

Neither team was able to get untracked offensively in the first quarter with UC Davis and Southern Utah combining for eight punts in the opening 15 minutes. With the defenses taking center stage, both teams went 3-and-out three times on their first four drives and both went only six plays on the others.

The Aggies had just 23 total yards in the opening quarter while the Thunderbirds only had three. Defensive end Antho-ny Baumgart, linebacker Nas Anesi and safety Ryan Parenteau helped lead the way for UC Davis with early sacks.

Southern Utah, though, finally broke through with the game’s biggest offensive play to that point when quarterback Patrick Tyler hit Brady Measom on the near sideline early in the second quarter and Measom broke free before going down the UC Davis 10. Malik Brown took it in from 11 yards two plays later to put the Thunder-birds up, 7-0.

UC Davis was held on its next drive and Southern Utah got the next big break when punter Colby Wadman wasn’t able to handle the snap and was tackled at the 4. The Thunderbirds turned that opportunity into seven points when Tyler kept it for a 2-yard TD.

The Aggies’ offense was finally able to get on track midway through the second quarter with Joshua Kelley carrying the ball for 12 yards and a first down before later going 34 yards to the SUU 24. Dale hit tight end Gabe Martinez to get to the 11 but the Thunderbirds held there and UC Davis settled for a 26-yard field goal from Blair.

SUU scored the final 10 points of the game.Besides Scott, the Aggies were without starting tight end Nehe-

miah Winston, receiver Ramon Vargas, and linebackers Brady Stibi and Russell Reeder. Center Kevin Gavigan missed his third game.

Cornerback Isaiah Olave returned an interception for an 11-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter, helping to seal UC Davis’ homecoming win over Northern Colorado during at Aggie Stadium.

The Aggies also got a pair of rushing TDs from senior Manusa-moa Luuga while snapping a four-game losing streak. The Bears dropped their second in a row.

Olave’s heroics came after senior Colby Wadman pinned North-ern Colorado at its own 12 with a 54-yard punt with 3:01 to go and the Aggies clinging to a 27-21 lead. Quarterback Kyle Sloter threw to his right on first down but Olave was there to meet the pass which he returned for an 11-yard touchdown.

The play was another key moment for the UC Davis defense which put together its second straight solid effort. A week after holding Southern Utah to 260 total yards, the Aggies limited the

Bears to just 269, including 103 on the ground. Northern Colo-rado had just 64 total yards in the second half, 56 of them on its third-quarter TD drive and 23 during its final drive in the closing minutes.

the same timeframe.Freshman Matt Blair made two field goals, hitting from 38 yards

UC DAVIS IS A PROUD MEMBER OF THE BIG SKY CONFERENCEGm. 10 - at Montana State

UC Davis turned in another strong defense performance – high-lighted by Anthony Baumgart’s 61-yard fumble return for a TD early in the game – but No. 17/18 Cal Poly was able to come back from a halftime deficit and hold off the Aggies in a hard-fought Battle for the Golden Horseshoe matchup.

Manusamoa Luuga gained 118 yards on 15 carries for his third 100-yard game of the season while Keelan Doss caught six passes for 64 yards. The Aggies’ offense, however, was only able to must 122 yards on the ground and 182 through the air and wasn’t able to find the endzone until Ben Scott hit Doss for a 5-yard TD pass late in the game that made it 21-16, and set up an onsides kick in the final minute that Cal Poly was able to recover.

Safety Zach Jones had 10 solo tackles to lead the UC Davis defense while linebacker Ryan Bua had nine. The Mustangs en-

tered the game averaging 352.5 rushing ypg. – third-best in the country – but were held to just 100 yards on 29 carries in the first half as the Aggies took a 9-7 lead. Cal Poly would’ve finished significant-ly below its rushing average but Kyle Lewis had a key 91-yard TD run with 2:54 left in the game that helped them finish with 320 on the night.

Overall, UC Davis held Cal Poly to 364 total yards, well below its 506.7 average

The Aggies jumped to a quick lead, thanks to their third defen-

sive touchdown of the season and the second one to come on a fumble return. With first down at the UC Davis 28, Cal Poly looked to keep the ball on the ground but quarterback Dano Graves lost 11 yards and fumbled the ball which was scooped up by Baumgart at the 39 in front of the UC Davis bench. His teammates gave him a convoy as he raced untouched for the score. Matt Blair missed the extra point, keeping the score at 6-0.

Luuga gained 113 yards in the first half and the Aggies outgained Cal Poly, 176-144, while taking a 9-7 lead into the break. The Mus-tangs grabbed the lead for good midway through the third quarter when Graves took advantage of good field position to drive Cal Poly 45 yards in eight plays before rushing up the middle 14 yards for a touchdown that made it 14-9.

Neither team was able to find paydirt from there and UC Davis looked to take advantage of a great defensive stand that stopped the Mustangs on fourth down late in the fourth quarter. However, the Aggies were forced to punt and Cal Poly took it at their own 8 with 4:04 to while holding a slim lead. But, facing a third-and-9, the Mustangs gave the ball to Lewis around the right side and he raced 91 yards for the back-breaking score.

Scott engineered a clock-managing 75-yard drive for UC Davis in the final few minutes that was highlighted by fourth-down com-pletions to tight end Dan Plum and Doss, including the latter which put the Aggies in business at the 5 after a 21-yard play. Scott then hit Doss for a short score with 44 seconds left to make it 21-16 but the Mustangs recovered the onsides kick to secure the win.

Freshman Jared Harrell caught a pair of touchdown passes for UC Davis and Keelan Doss hauled in another but visiting Portland State used a quick start that netted 30 first-half points on its way to a Big Sky football win before 5,665 fans at Aggie Stadium.

Josh Kraght scored on Portland State’s first possession and Jonathan Gonzales kicked the first of his three field goals as the Vikings took a 10-6 lead after the first quarter. Paris Penn had a pair of short TD runs in the second and Gonzales was good from 37 yards as the the Vikings went up 27-9 just before halftime. Doss hauled in a 7-yard TD pass from Ben Scott and Gonzales convert-ed a 34-yard field goal as Portland State went into halftime with a 30-16 lead.

Backup quarterback C.J. Spencer connected with Jared Har-rell for a 14-yard scoring play and Spencer ran in from a yard to

help UC Davis score the game’s final 14 points after the Vikings had opened a 51-16 advantage.

Doss caught four passes for 91 yards, Harrell had four grabs for 68 yards and Chris Martin had five receptions for 40 yards to help lead the Aggies’ offense, which also got 91 rushing yards from Joshua Kelley and 89 from Manusamoa Luuga. Kelley ripped off a 39-yard run in the game while Luuga scampered 24 on his best carry. UC Davis rushed for 190 yards overall.

Linebacker Nas Anesi had nine tackles for the Aggies’ defense while linebacker Ryan Bua had eight, including an 11-yard sack.

Trailing 7-0 in the first quarter, Harrell’s 11-yard TD pass from Scott capped a 12-play, 75-yard drive but a missed extra point put the Aggies down by a point. The Vikings then rattled off 17 straight points – highlighted by touchdown runs covering 2 and 1 yards by Penn – that pushed the lead to 24-6. Matt Blair had a 36-yard field goal late in the half which was answered by a 37-yarder from Gonzales.

But UC Davis rallied with a 4-play drive that went 70 yards, keyed by three catches for 60 yards by Doss to get to within 30-16 just before the break. Doss’ had a 48-yard catch and run down to the 7-yard line that sparked the drive.

Penn raced 34 yards up the far sideline after catching a pass from Kuresa and Nate Tago tacked on a pair of 1-yard TD plung-es to give the Vikings their biggest lead, 51-16, midway through the fourth quarter. Harrell’s leaping 14-yard TD catch from Spencer with 5:04 to play was part of UC Davis’ 10-play, 83-yard drive and helped highlight the Aggies’ fourth quarter.

Portland State finished with 602 total yards while UC Davis fin-ished with 408. Kuresa was 17 of 21 for 425 yards while the Vikings rushed for 177 yards. Kelley carried the ball 10 times for his 91 yards while Luuga had 16 carries to reach his 89. Scott threw for 118 yards while Spencer added 100.
