Architecture is the means by which we provide

shelter for people and those things they find important. It is intrinsic to all communities. It also provides for symbols of identity and cultural representation.

Sustainable Architecture places emphasis on the

holistic values of a community and recognizes that the earth has finite resource bases, which must be used with intelligence and responsibility to ensure the well being of future generations. It postulates an approach that reduces unnecessary material use, recyclable material reuse, total life cycle costs and minimal carbon production as a result of the design, construction, client use and total life of the building

Oceanic Architecture works closely with their

clients to ensure that an appropriate design is attained that match their clients’ wishes. We recognize that each project has its own special and individual requirements and that often needs vary from individual to individual, community to community and culture to culture.

Ocean Architecture is dedicated to producing fine

architecture, which reflects their client and their clients’ aspirations.

As the architectural profession has become better informed of the impact of their

endeavors upon the planet, most have moved towards a greater responsibility in their work

with investigations into Sustainable Design.

Sustainable Design or ESD (Ecologically Sensitive Design) accepts that the planet has a

finite amount of natural resources from which to support the planets populations. Wise use

of those resources, together with an intelligent approach to design to mitigate the Carbon affects of construction, material manufacture, transportation and destruction requires

accountability from designers of their work and their design approach.

Oceanic Architecture has embraced the principles of Sustainable Design and ESD since its

inception and has become renown for its intelligent environmental approach to design

Briefs and the for the production of ESD designs. Mike Barns, the company Principle has

been involved with environmental design since 1988 when appointed to the New Zealand governmental task group, the RMLR Core Group, charged with investigating and repealing

all impedimentary legislation which disadvantaged environmental preservation and

protection and also charged with creating new overarching legislation to manage New Zealand’s environmental protection and sustainability of the countries natural resources

(The Resource Management Act 1990).

Sustainable Design principles’ have driven Oceanic Architecture’s approach to architecture

in New Zealand, the United States and the Pacific Ocean area with projects which have

become signatures for environmental design.

The scope of services extends from Master Planning, to Architectural Design, Urban

Design, Construction Management, Project Management and EIA (Environmental Impact

Assessment) of public and private projects. The size of projects has extended from small school design to large University multi level buildings and Campus Sustainability Master

Plan design.

Where necessary, Oceanic Architecture partners with University research laboratories, technology companies, planners and green industrial leaders around the world to produce

innovative design solutions. This network extends from the UK and Europe to

Australia/New Zealand, China and the United States.

I n t r o d u c t i o n A specialized building to provide for the growth and diversity of Hawaiian Studies, Hawaiian Language and Hawaiian Education Departments and Schools at the University of Hawaii primary Campus at Manoa, Oahu, Hawaii. The cultural design of this building pays acknowledgement to traditional Hawaiian values and notions of earth stewardship (malama aina). The traditional Hawaiian Hale symbolizes the Hawaiian presence in the landscape and provides passive heating and traditional cooling opportunities for contemporary building design. This building is designed according to primary ESD principals, including correct orientation, thermal mass, passive wind cooling (Pacific Trade winds), thermal piles and employs non fossil fuelled technologies to run the building. A combination of Photovoltaic solar panels, wind turbines and site hydro generation with passive cooling principles allow the building to be totally self sufficient energetically and will export energy back to the University.

Z e r o C a r b o n Traditional Hawaiian values of family, intergenerational societal roles, caring for the land, cosmology, navigation, dance and chanting were investigated to produce a new design language from which to design this landmark building. Fusion of traditional tropical building principles, together with green technologies are designed to produce a zero carbon building.

I n t r o d u c t i o n A Brownfield site was interrogated to produce a building sensitive to contours, landform and the pre European history of the area. Contemporary architectural expression of traditional Maori cultural beliefs of knowledge, family, social responsibility and the earthmother. Ecologically Sustainable Design principles of use of sun, wind, earth, water and plant biodiversity were explored and reconciled to produce a school that reflects its community. Optimal use of natural lighting to reduce fossil fuel energies and large open spaces to create interactive and animated learning spaces; rain shelter and external teaching spaces were all achieved in this project.

L o w C a r b o n Sustainable design principles required a selection of minimal carbon footprint materials. Accordingly, the contemporary design was achieved by the use of timber frame on steel structure with timber and cement based external linings. Non-lead based paints were used through out. Cultural Design principles required acknowledgement and symbolic reference to primary Maori social and cultural institutions. This design, co authored by the school and students from the school pursued the metaphor of an ancient Maori symbol for knowledge and betterment.

Sustainable Design discussions have matured over the past 10 years. Where as previous discussions were primary centered around the introduction and intervention of individual building designs to better their energy use, current discussion recognize that the correct level of focus is at the community level, with the assumption that the urban and architectural design of their buildings are being correctly and adequately provided for. Sustainable Communities discussions require that not only should the individual buildings correctly address ESD sustainable design, but the amalgamation of master planning and architectural design should address the overall holistic needs of the community and provide for their needs in an environmentally sensitive way. Energy modeling, planned non carbon energy use, waste management planning, reduced water use, reduced heat island planning, transportation systems, site recycling, carbon miles of materials and labor, total life cycle costs, cultural retention, cultural identity, social integration and mixed use planning all play a part in Sustainable Communities studies today. Oceanic Architecture is involved at all levels of these discussions with clients, energy produces, architectural laboratories, material manufacturers, technology developers and land use developers. Relationships with key global Enviro-science labs in the UK, Australia, New Zealand and the United States ensures that Oceanic Architecture is well informed and up to date with current thinking in Sustainable Communities. Company members are encouraged to participate in academic and professional discussions and conferences as a way of staying connected to the discussions. The scope of services presented by Oceanic Architecture include Master Planning, energy use modeling, energy planning, transportation planning, waste management, architectural design and carbon use calculation.

I n t r o d u c t i o n A purpose designed and built school campus to provide for Maori Language in the New Zealand education curriculum. Captures fundamental Green design principles with natural lighting, passive solar heating to interior and timber from nearby harvestable forests on a Brownfield site. Minimal site engineering was undertaken to place the building on the site, settling it amongst the existing trees around the site and adjacent to an existing stream. Timber was treated with organic substances in lieu of standard toxic CCA derivatives’. 12

N a t u r a l L i g h t i n g Internal learning spaces were optimized for minimal energy use by maximizing natural light input into the spaces. Heat capture from solar gain also minimized carbon/ fossil fuel energies and reduced the carbon footprint of the school, the first of its kind for the New Zealand government. The role of Maori cultural integrity within the sustainable design objectives was investigated and pursued to ensure a sustainable community was establish as part of the schools mission. 13 s u s t a i n a b l e c o m nm u n i t i e s

In order to achieve communities that are socially and culturally integrated, support of individual members and embrace ESD principles, Sustainable Master Planning sets out the limits to growth and the extent to which natural resources can be harvested and employed. Oceanic Architecture has been involved in Master Planning new green field sustainable communities and sustainable community interventions within existing urban fabric. Lifestyle choices, healthy communities, respect for both gender, and appropriate treatment of the elderly in the community all form the foundations of Sustainable Master Planning.
