games started out; “If I were King...” and then we spelled

out our demands. “If I were King, no baths except

Life, however, has taught us that it’s not quite that

simple. Baths, are after all part of everyday hygiene, and

dessert first, however appealing as that may be, just isn’t a

Conversely, there are places where in a practical way

that there are Grand Officers, democratically elected from

the floor at our Grand Session. If you have served your

“GREETINGSGREETINGSGREETINGSGREETINGS FROMFROMFROMFROM THETHETHETHE GRANDGRANDGRANDGRAND EASTEASTEASTEAST”

Once again I offer greetings on behalf of the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Michigan. Frequently I struggle with finding a topic to write about for these monthly exercises but this time I have a topic and wish

I didn’t have to write about it. It is my sad duty to inform you of the passing of Right Excellent Companion William A. Siebert, Past Grand Officer. The

Grand Architect of the Universe summoned REC Bill to the Celestial Lodge unexpectedly on January 11, 2015; just 14 days shy of his 60th birthday.

William Alan Siebert was born on January 25th, 1955 in Royal Oak, MI. He graduated from Southfield- Lathrup High School in 1973, Albion College in 1977 and received his Law Degree from the University of Detroit Mercy Law School in 1980. Bill moved to Gladwin in 1986 and practiced law there until his death.

Bill was raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason in Gladwin Lodge #397 on Nov. 22, 1986. WB Siebert served Gladwin Lodge twice as Worshipful Master, first in 1992 and the 2nd time being this year. He also served the lodge for several years as Secretary and had terms as a Board of General Purposes representative for the Grand Lodge F&AM of Michigan.

Once he became a Mason, Brother Siebert quickly expanded his horizons to include the Scottish Rite in the Valley of Bay City, where he became active as a Mummer and made himself available for just about any part he possibly could do in the degrees. He was rewarded for his efforts in the Scottish Rite by being presented with the Meritorious Service Award in 2004. Noble Bill was a Shriner in the Elf Khurafeh Shrine Temple where he was a member of the Ritualistic Cast, this is where we became more than just nodding acquaintances and I began to appreciate his talents as a ritualist.

With all his other activities, REC Siebert seemed to really find a home in the York Rite. He served as High Priest of his Chapter of Royal Arch Masons, Thrice Illustrious Master his Council of Royal and Select Masons, and Commander his Commandery, each multiple times. With a phone call or email and about 2 weeks’ notice, Bill could be depended on to go just about anywhere to take part in degrees for Lodges, Chapters, and Councils and Commandery Orders.

He was also a Past Governor of North East Michigan York Rite College #16 and an Associate Regent (OPC) in the York Rite Sovereign College of North America. In addition to all that, he was a member of the Michigan Priory # 22 KYCH and a Past Sovereign Master of Sunrise Council #418 Allied Masonic Degrees. Bill was a frequent visitor to Masonic Week in Washington D.C., where he received many other degrees of the York Rite that are only conferred there.

MIC Seibert served as the Most Illustrious Grand Master of the Grand Council of Royal & Select Masons of Michigan in 2003 and until he stepped down for unspecified reasons last November (which I believed to be health related) REC Siebert was the Grand Scribe of the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Michigan. Even after his resignation, Bill volunteered to serve the Grand Chapter in any capacity he could aside from the Grand Line and took an appointment as DDI for a vacant district.

To sum all this up, I would have to say that REC William Seibert was truly a Mason’s Mason and his devotion to the craft set a shining example for us all to emulate.

At the present time no arrangements have been announced for funeral or memorial services, but I am told something will probably be done to mark Bill’s passing later in February or early March. His obituary can be seen online at http://www.hall-kokotovichfuneralhome.com/ .

Before I close, let me finish with a couple of happier notes. In January I attended Mackinac Chapter #134 for the conferral of the Royal Arch Mason Degree on 2 candidates and a pro-tem, three were scheduled but one had to defer until a later date. There were a few minor glitches, mostly due to the inexperience of the members doing the work, but overall it went very well and I commend the members of Mackinac Chapter for their efforts. There are only a relative few chapters in the state that would even attempt to confer the Royal Arch Degree and now I am happy to include Mackinac Chapter #134 on that short list.

Also in January, Lady Kristi and I attended the DeMolay Winterfest in Flint, where once again we had a great time with the young people of our Masonic family. On Saturday afternoon I got to participate in a fund raising effort by volunteering?? to be drenched in whipped cream from aerosol cans then a target for a whipped cream pie throwing contest. With Grand Master William LeVeque leading the unruly mob of Reddi-Whip miscreants, I wound up with whipped cream hair, eyebrows, beard, underarm deodorant, and several other places. I suspect the only reason my pants where not full of the goo was because I was sitting down and the floor was too slippery for anyone to try to drag me to a standing position. All in all it was a worthwhile experience with volunteer leaders from our youth groups, MWGM LeVeque, and me raising over $700.00 for the DeMolay Memorial Heroes Fund.

616.662.0288 [email protected] Greetings Companions,

So here it is two-thirds through the month of January, and my nemesis the calendar is staring at me, because it knows, that if I do not get off my duff, and conjure up an article quickly, I will be burning the past midnight oil (dead line is the 20th, 12 midnight MST and 2:AM EST).

There are not a lot of good things that take place in the month of January if you are not an avid sports fan and do not enjoy molding one’s self into the cushion of your easy chair or sofa, but there is one that can perk your spirits, and that would be DeMolay Winter Fest. This year’s event was held the 16th thru the 18th at the Holiday Inn Flint on Hill Rd. It is the middle of January you are feeling old and cold, you are bored, then you should have attended this event. Spending a weekend with upwards of a 120 young people both male and female will make you young. The activities they planned for themselves will make you young. The DeMolay plans this event for themselves and the young ladies for a fun weekend. I neither will run down the list of all of the events, but just some highlights. One of the last things I had expected this year, was a dance featuring Swing Dancing with the youth, not the elders most of which remember Swing dancing. To add to the fun the youth had the opportunity to take out frustrations with adults by assaulting them with Whipped Cream pies and smears. Who better to assault? Than MWGM William LeVeque and MEGHP Lou McCray who were both great sports and raised a lot of money for a very good cause. I am sure if you look on the Grand Masters blog you will find a lot of pictures. So for the weekend at least, Lady Sherry and I forgot that it was winter.

Upon our return home, we had the opportunity to relax, for about ten minutes. The phone rang and we were jolted into the reality that the Educational Seminar is in five days, and although preparations are almost complete there is still a little to be done. It seems that for this year at least Mother Nature is going to cooperate. Last years even, as most of us try to forget, the temperature was in the negative double digits, with a wind chill that drove it much further down. To make the mix even more fun we had lots of snow. This year with a little palm greasing of the weatherman, and a lot of devotion to Mother Natures’ boss! The ten-day forecast is much better.

Gee I have made it to the three quarter point of my article and have yet to mention a thing about February. The 14th of February is the day set aside this year for the George Washington Celebration to be held in Caro, Mi. There will be a meeting of the Grand Chapter Officers and DDI’s in the morning, after lunch the Grand Chapter RAM Foundation will take center stage. The day will culminate with a dinner that the Caro Chapter has been putting on for nearly a century. This is a fine ending of a great weekend in the middle of winter and what a better way to spend your day than taking your Valentine out to a dinner and excellent program.

Well Companions the holidays are over and I hope everyone had a

chance to spend time with family and friends. By the time this appears, the Education Seminar in Mt Pleasant will

have been held and hope everyone gleaned something from that Seminar. The annual George Washington Dinner, held by the Caro Chapter, is coming up on the 14th of February this will be the 96th year for this dinner.

I traveled to Mt Vernon Chapter in Samaria on the 10th of January for their 150th year celebration and it was well attended by the Grand Chapter.

I will be travelling to Saginaw on the 1st of February for a planning meeting for the future Grand York Rite Sessions, should be an interesting day. On the 7th of February is the Enhance the Secret meeting in Northville, open house starts at 10:30 am. Hope you can attend and bring some of the newest Master Mason from your lodge with you. The 21th of March, I will be in Clarkston for the awarding of the Bronze Medal to Forrest L Taylor and also to honor Robert D Reese who received the Cryptic Master of the Year Award. Just reminders please send in your nomination for the Meritorious Service Award, there are three awarded each year, and nomination have been sparse the last few years. Let`s make the selection committee work a little more this year.

The General Grand Chapter, East Central Conference will be held in Indianapolis Indiana March 13th and 14th this year.

I have visited most of the assigned chapters on my list to visit, only two to go, the weather has not been very cooperative lately for travel. When those visits are complete I will focus on visiting those chapters in District 7, just to say hi, these will not be official visits.

I am working on getting caught on the MHA Masonic Heritage Awards that a still pending presentation in my area should have them all done, hopefully by May. So let`s get more of these awarded it helps get us seen by the symbolic lodges and helps cement the ties between them and the York Rite.

The installation of Chapters will be coming up in April and I am sure to attend a number of those this year, would be great to see member from other chapters attend these as well. So far I have not had any request to be the Grand installing officer as yet, but I am sure there will have one or two request again this year.

Well that is all from me this time around, hope to see you in my

travels soon.

Make an Impact Continued Page 1, col

1. most assuredly the same applies for the Grand Chapter. You can make an impact acting as a DDI for the Grand Chapter, both in the local chapter and in the whole state.

But wait…there’s more! The Grand Chapter has many committees and for many years these committees have been heavily populated with Grand Officers. Arguably, this way they could have imposed the will of the Grand Chapter as a whole. But those committees deserve to be reflective of our great state, and of our Grand Chapter, and there is persuasive argument that can only happen as we reach into the local chapters for the talent there. Where does your talent lie? Could that be of value to the Grand Chapter? How could you serve?

Teams are not assembled with cookie-cutter parts. Great teams are assembled with individual members with their individual talents focused on the good of the whole. What each member of a team may bring to the team is valuable to the whole. Think for a second about a baseball team. All pitchers? Who bats? All infielders? Who catches flys in the outfield? Oh, and by the way who catches what the pitcher throws? You get the picture. Each member of the leadership team has a valuable place in the successful future of the Grand Chapter.

Right now, the Grand King is assembling his team for next year. Make it known that you want to join the team. Think of it this way: If you were King, how would the world be different?

David W. Dossette, PGHP Grand Governor, MiYRSC

Greetings from John A. Ames Grand Master of the 2nd Veil

The story of the Four Chaplains brings a tear to the eye and a sense of hope to the heart. In the early morning of Feb. 3, 1943, a torpedo struck the USAT Dorchester in the Atlantic Ocean, just 150 miles from its destination. Panic and chaos quickly replaced the calm and quiet aboard Dorchester. The blast killed scores of men, while many more were seriously wounded. It would only take 20 minutes for the Dorchester to sink into the ocean. But what occurred in those 20 minutes is something we still revere today. I marvel at the selfless act of courage during the sinking by Rev. George Fox (Methodist), Jewish Rabbi Alexander Goode, Rev. Clark Poling (Dutch Reformed) and Father John Washington (Roman Catholic). Each man demonstrated service before self in a time of crisis. The chaplains calmed the crewmen, comforted the injured, directed others to safety and distributed life jackets. When there were no more life jackets, the four chaplains removed theirs and gave them to four crewmen. Pvt. William Bednar recalled floating in oil-laden water surrounded by dead bodies and debris. “I could hear men crying, pleading, praying,” Bednar said. “I could also hear the chaplains preaching courage. Their voices were the only thing that kept me going.” As the Dorchester disappeared under the waves, the Four Chaplains stood praying arm-in-arm. Feb. 3 will mark 72 years since the sinking and the display of bravery. The American Legion encourages post, district and department chaplains to commemorate the anniversary on the first Sunday in February, Four Chaplains Sunday. In these ceremonies, we honor the Four Chaplains and ensure their legacy of brotherhood and selfless service. May they be remembered for generations to come. Valentines Day Sat. February 14th

Each year on February 14th, many people

exchange cards, candy, gifts or flowers with

their special “valentine.”

The day of romance we call Valentine’s Day

is named for a Christian martyr and dates

back to the 5th century, but has origins in the

Roman holiday Lupercalia.

Enjoy the day, celebrate it with your loved

ones, but, remember that it should be a

joyous celebration every day of the year, in

your lives.

Are you a member of the Scottish Rite,

Northern Masonic Jurisdiction? Then you

have, hopefully, seen an excellent

portrayal of this historical and emotional

event.

NOT YET???

Contact your local Valley Scottish Rite

Office for a membership application to

Thinking outside the 20th

century

The arrangement of the Council Chamber circa 2853 Anno Depositionis could provide you with an opportunity to

reinvigorate your regular assembly.

T.I.M. dressed in royal purple robes, a golden crown on his head, and

a scepter in his hand, wearing a purple collar or ribbon, with the

jewel of his office, the triangle with a towel and square

D.M seated to the right of the T.I.M with the SAME dress and

decorations. His jewel is a triangle, with trowel and level.

P.C.W.—actually titled Principal Conductor of the Works (yes, Works,

plural)--is seated to the left of the T.I.M. He is dressed in yellow

robes, trimmed with blue, a purple collar and the jewel of a triangle

with the trowel and the plumb. In his hand, he golds a gold hammer.

(How many Councils have that implement today?)

The Master of the Exchequer wears a triangle, with a trowel and

cross-keys. Since you are opening in the Select Degree, the Master of the Exchequer sits in the south. (Who is the

Master of the Exchequer?)

The Recorder wears the jewel with a triangle and the trowel and cross-pens within it. The Recorder sits in the north for

the opening in the Select Master Degree.

The Captain of the Guards (yes, Guards, plural) wears a triangle, with a trowel and axe within it. He represents

Adoniran. The Captain of the Guards is seated in the west with a drawn sword. In the Royal Degree only he is called

“Master of the Guard” (singular)

The Steward represents Achizar. The jewel of the Steward is a triangle with a trowel and crossed swords and guards the

inside of the door.

The Conductor (not Conductor of the Council) wears a triangle with a trowel, a scroll, and a baton.

The raps…..are 8 quick and one slow…..Think about why that would make sense.

The T.I.M also employs the “sign of silence” prior to the prayer and the declaration that the council is open.

Yes, the items placed inside the Ark have not changed, however to complete the educational experience ask who made

the Ark. I suspect some will be surprised by the name of Bezaleel and Aholiab.

Have someone with camera take a digital photo. Be pleased, you have also taken a physical inventory of your regalia.

Congratulations on a successful “business meeting” regular assembly.---MIGM--

www.kt-mi.org Sir Knights The 2014 Inspection season is in the record books. I wish to thank all those who had active parts in the Ten Man Full Form openings. There was more Full Form Openings this year and I thank them for their extra effort. The Order of the Temple was the high point of each inspection. Sir Knights we seem to have most of our Orders done at either two or three order days or inspections. Are we receiving petitions and letting then wait for those special days. I feel that we need to act on those petitions as we receive them and in ninety days or less have the petitioner knighted. Careful planning and communication are essential. The inspections are well attended by many knights who travel to assist and attend even just to be there for knighting’s. Those same knights will do so at other times if asked or informed of what is planned. Sir Knights was the last CONCLAVE you attended interesting and worthwhile. Why not, was it just the officers talking, did you have anything to contribute. We have a ”constitutional number” (9) and that is not just officers and can be composed of any member also. Our annual election of officers and appointment of committees is fast approaching. We need to ask not what I can do but what can we do together. There is strength in numbers.

Beauceant Installation of the Officers The Installation of the Officers of Assembly No 68 Social Order of the Beauceant in Grand Rapid was January 3,

2015. The Officers to be installed wore their customary white uniforms during the ceremony. The installing staff was Mrs. Sharon Cooper and Mrs. Annaliese Ridgeway both Past Presidents of Assembly No 68. The Sir Knights of DeMolay No 5 stationed in Grand Rapids presented the United States Flag and gave a tribute. The Jobs Daughters of Bethel No 10 of Grand Rapids and Bethel No 86 of Sparta presented the Lighted Cross Ceremony. The Officers, families and guests attended a dinner prepared by Sir Knight Richard Stange to complete a fine afternoon.

The Officers of the Beauceant are: Mrs. Vera (Edward) James, President; Mrs. Sonnie (Marcel) Bedard, 1st Vice President; Mrs. Annaliese (Harley) Ridgway PP, 2nd Vice President; Mrs. Paula (John) Chaney, Preceptress; Mrs. Sharon(Robert) Cooper PP, Assistant Marshall; Mrs. Irma (Clare) Franzine PP, Treasurer; Mrs. Shirley (Leonard) Booth, Oracle; Mrs. Jean (Paul) Roggow Inner Guard; Mrs. Iola (Willard) Doty, Outer Guard; Companion James Edward James, Right Illustrious Deputy Grand Master, Sir Knight Kenneth Simons Generalissimo, DeMolay No 5 and myself were also in attendance.

Jobs Daughter is an organization for young a woman that provides a wholesome environment based of the foundation of high morals, love of country, love of family and friends and respect for others. It is an organization that fosters a sense of pride in achievement for each and all members as they prepare to become adult leaders of the future.

DeMolay is an organization dedicated to preparing young men to lead successful, happy and productive lives. DeMolay provides opportunity by developing their civic awareness, personal responsibility and leadership skills for today’s society. DeMolay build friendships.

The Order of the Rainbow teaches leadership skills and public speaking along with developing self-respect, confidence, poise patriotism, fidelity and character not to mention friendship for a life time.

Sir Knights can you assist with your time at their meetings, helping develop membership and encouraging your F&AM Lodge, RAM Chapter, R&SM Council and KT Commanderies to become involved with the Youth Organizations.
