Miguel Grau Seminario Known as the Gentleman of the Seas, he was born in Piura the 27th of July 1834, Admiral Miguel Grau is remembered by friends and enemies alike as not only a great tactician in naval warfare, but also for his chivalry, the likes of which had not been seen before or since. He died in combat defending Peru against invading aggressors at the Battle of Angamos on the 8th of October 1879, and is remembered on this day each year with a public holiday. Knight of the seas At the Battle of Iquique, after Huáscar sank the Chilean corvette Esmeralda by ramming her, Grau ordered the rescue of the surviving crew from the waters. Grau also wrote condolences to the widow of his opponent Arturo Prat, returning his sword and personal effects.
Death at Battle of Angamos
Almirante Grau was killed by an armor-piercing shell fired by the ironclad Almirante
Cochrane in a four against one duel during the Naval Battle of Angamos on 8 October
1879. Huáscar was captured by the Chileans after incurring severe casualties in the
close-range artillery duel. Although most of Grau's body was not recovered, his
remains, which were buried with military honours in Chile, were returned to Peru in
1958.
His final resting place lies at the Escuela Militar Naval del Peru, in El Callao in an
underground mausoleum. He posthumously received the rank of Gran Almirante del
Perú (Grand Admiral of Peru) in 1967 by order of the Peruvian Congress. A portrait
of Almirante Grau is on display in the museum ship Huáscar.

de julio de 1834, el Almirante Miguel Grau es recordado por amigos y enemigos por
igual, no sólo como un gran táctico en la guerra naval, sino también por su
caballerosidad, como nunca se había visto antes ni después. Murió en combate,
defendiendo Perú contra la invasión de los agresores en la batalla de Angamos, el 8 de
octubre de 1879, y se le recuerda en este día cada año con un día festivo.
Caballero de los mares
En la batalla de Iquique, después de que el Huáscar hundiera la corbeta Esmeralda
chilena con una embestida, Grau ordenó el rescate de la tripulación superviviente de
las aguas. Grau también escribió condolencias a la viuda de su oponente, Arturo Prat,
devolviendo su espada y pertenencias personales.
Muerte en la batalla de Angamos
Almirante Grau murió por un proyectil perforante disparado por el acorazado
Almirante Cochrane en un duelo de cuatro contra uno durante la Batalla Naval de
Angamos el 8 de octubre de 1879. Huáscar fue capturado por los chilenos después de
incurrir en graves bajas en el duelo de artillería de corto alcance. Aunque la mayor
parte del cuerpo de Grau no se recuperó, sus restos, que fueron enterrados con
honores militares en Chile, fueron devueltos a Perú en 1958.
Su lugar de descanso final se encuentra en la Escuela Militar Naval del Perú, en El
Callao, en un mausoleo subterráneo. El título póstumo recibió el grado de Gran
Almirante del Perú (Gran Almirante del Perú) en 1967 por orden del Congreso de la
República. Un retrato del Almirante Grau se encuentra en exhibición en el Huáscar
buque museo.
