Sophos SG 230 and SG 210 Mid-Range Appliances

The Sophos SG 230 and SG 210 were 1-2 in firewall throughput testing while handling a mix of Layer 7 unidirectional traffic. These were the best performances observed to date and exceeded the Industry Average by 65.1% and 56.0%, respectively.

S ophos engaged Miercom to assess its SG 230 and SG 210 Unified Threat Management (UTM) hardware appliances for branch offices and small to medium-sized enterprises.

The Sophos appliances were evaluated along with comparable appliances from other vendors for performance, scalability and security efficacy as part of ongoing standardized testing, the Miercom UTM and Next-Generation Firewall Industry Assessment.

Performance testing validated throughput with combinations of common security features enabled, such as firewall, Intrusion Prevention System (IPS), application control and antivirus.

The SG 230 and SG 210, in order, were clearly the top appliances. They finished 1-2 in many tests, including firewall throughput while handling a mix of Layer 7 unidirectional traffic as shown in Figure 1.

Miercom Performance Verified The performance, scalability and security efficacy of pre-release versions of the Sophos SG 230 and SG 210 Unified Threat Management (UTM) hardware appliances were validated in hands-on competitive testing that also included comparable appliances for branch offices and small and medium-sized enterprises from three other vendors. The SG 230 and SG 210 were clearly, in order, the top two appliances in the field. For example, in 11 throughput tests involving Layer 7 traffic, the SG 230 finished first in eight and second in one (to the SG 210). In the same tests, the SG 210 achieved one first-place finish and six second-place finishes (all to the SG 230).
