HISTORY IN THE MAKING After the generous donation of the Agora complex from the LoConti family to MidTown Cleveland, Inc., we partnered with Geis Companies/Hemingway Development to revitalize the Agora Theatre & Ballroom and its 50,000-square-foot, adjacent office building.

DEAR MEMBERS, STAKEHOLDERS & FRIENDS Several years ago, who would have believed that MidTown Cleveland would be seen as the region’s hottest market for development? Today, in 2015, we are all becoming believers! The potential created by the Health-Tech Corridor is now being realized with transformational development projects, tens of millions of dollars in new investment, the support of current stakeholders, and a renewed spirit of optimism for MidTown’s future. This year’s Annual Report reflects this new chapter in MidTown’s development.

Here are several of MidTown’s most significant successes during the past year:

• Opening of the new 3rd District Police Station at 4501 Chester Avenue

• Occupancy of the three-building MidTown Tech Park rising to 90%

• University Hospitals’ decision to build a Women’s and Children’s Health Center near East 57th Street & Euclid, complemented by new office building development by Geis Companies

• A new first-class restaurant opening in the Agora complex, where office occupancy rose from 35% to 97% in the past two years

• Another successful year of events, including food trucks at the weekly Chomp, the Block Party & Security Fair, and the MidTown Cleveland HealthLine Classic 10k/5k

• Completion of a market analysis that showed strong potential for residential development in MidTown

As MidTown Cleveland, Inc. moves forward into the second half of this decade, the future is brighter than ever for our community. LDA ARCHITECTS, INC.5000 EUCLID AVENUE #104LDA architects is an award-winning architectural firm formed in 1995. Over the past 20 years in business, LDA has built a reputation in Northeast Ohio for excellent service, design quality, and technical skill. In 2014, President Dominick Durante moved his business into the Offices at the Agora, where the open space helps the 11-person staff better collaborate and serve clients.

CLINICAL MANAGEMENT CONSULTANTS 5000 EUCLID AVENUE #206Clinical Management Consultants, Inc. (CMC) opened its new Eastern Division Office on March 1, 2014, in order to tackle recruitment for the eastern half of the United States. CMC purposely chose the Cleveland MidTown area for its proximity to others in the healthcare industry. The Cleveland office is staffed with seven professional healthcare recruitment consultants who are dedicated to fulfilling their clients’ hiring needs.

NEIGHBORHOOD CONNECTIONS 5000 EUCLID AVENUE #310Neighborhood Connections is a small grants and grassroots community-building program created by the Cleveland Foundation in 2003. Its main goal is to empower people to become engaged in the community. It awards small grants to fund citizen-led neighborhood projects, events, and activities. Presently, it has eight full-time employees.

STEPSTONE ACADEMY 3328 CARNEGIE AVENUE Now designated as the Promise Neighborhood’s representative charter school, Stepstone Academy fosters a vision of lifelong learning and inspiration. In collaborative Transformation Plan efforts with the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, Stepstone strives to provide the highest-quality education for students in kindergarten through fourth grade. Stepstone prepares students to value academic achievement and participatory citizenship by emphasizing the importance of college graduation.

THE CHOMPIn its third year in 2015, The Chomp continues to offer local cuisine, fresh air, networking opportunities, and break time from the office every Tuesday during the summer from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The lunchtime food truck event hosts approximately 400 guests each week who express 100% satisfaction and interest in returning.

SPRING BEAUTIFICATION DAYBeginning at The Offices at The Agora walkway and extending service to the East 46th Street gardens and Colonel Young Square Park, volunteers devoted hours to enhancing neighborhood aesthetics, community pride, civic engagement and, ultimately, property values through litter cleanup and landscaping projects. Over 100 volunteers cleaned up and planted 50 varieties of flowers and greenery during the 2015 event.

CLEVELAND INDUSTRIAL RETENTION INITIATIVE (CIRI)3301 EUCLID AVENUE CIRI is an integral part of the City of Cleveland’s plan to link manufacturing businesses to valuable community resources for operations improvement, industrial capacity expansion, and profitability maintenance. CIRI’s primary objective is to guide Cleveland companies in building connections to maintain competition, foster job creation, and develop solutions to stimulate business and neighborhood investment.

PLANTSCAPING AND BLOOMS1865 EAST 40TH STREETFounded by Nancy Silverman in 1979, Plantscaping and Blooms has grown to 50 team members who service hundreds of clients. The family-owned interior landscaping company celebrating 35 years in business provides creativity, exceptional service, diverse capabilities, and comprehensive inventory to meet clients’ needs. The team of certified horticulturists, artful designers, product developers, fabricators, and installation engineers transforms interior spaces through development of replica plants, floral displays, and accessories.

FASHION ARCHITECTURAL DESIGNS4005 CARNEGIE AVENUEWith over three decades of experience, Fashion Architectural Design continues to distribute decorative finish products and lead active community involvement in MidTown. It represents over 20 different manufacturers’ product lines of commercial wallcoverings, wood and stone veneers, laminates, dry erase products, decorative wall panels, and acoustical products.

AMERICAN COFFEE SERVICES6928 CARNEGIE AVENUE Located in MidTown for over 30 years, American Coffee Services continues to serve businesses with upscale coffee products, equipment, and service. American Coffee Services employs 20 personnel and offers its clients a flexible delivery policy. Through partnership with MidTown Cleveland, Inc., American Coffee Services is able to resolve its security, distribution, and property value issues.

HAUS MALTS6107 CARNEGIE AVENUEAndrew Martahus, president, and his father, Craig Martahus, are renovating the old Smith and Oby building into the first malt house in Cleveland since Prohibition. Haus Malts will commence production of high-quality malted grains, primarily for local craft breweries, this fall. The malting process involves the selection of high-quality grains, steeping, germination, and reduction of grain moisture in specialized, low-temperature kilns.

THE CLEVELAND CANVAS GOODS MANUFACTURING COMPANY1960 EAST 57TH STREETOperational since 1922, The Cleveland Canvas Goods Manufacturing Company is the leading manufacturer of original vacuum cleaner bags in the United States. Based in Cleveland with 25–30 employees, the company manufactures filters and filter bags, custom carrying cases and equipment covers, duffel bags, grass-catcher bags, and the Cold Holder™, its own insulated carrying case. The fourth generation family-owned corporation continues to foster continuity, growth, and success, creating a foundation for the future.

KARNIS SAFE & LOCK COMPANY INC.3100 PROSPECT AVENUE EASTEstablished in 1919, Karnis Safe & Lock Company Inc. is a small, full-service locksmith, safe, and vault company. Karnis’ five, full-time employees provide exceptional commercial and residential locksmith services to the Cleveland area.

PIERRE’S ICE CREAM COMPANY6200 EUCLID AVENUEEstablished in 1932, Pierre’s team of 80 employees continues to produce gourmet ice cream locally, nationally, and internationally. With each expansion and relocation through more than 80 years of manufacturing and service, Pierre’s 30,000-square-foot warehouse remains within three miles of its original location in the heart of Cleveland. Its 235 products and flavors range from indulgent, premium ice cream to delicious, probiotic frozen yogurt to refreshing, fruit sherbet and more.

PENN SQUARE COMMUNITY GARDENCONNECTING THE COMMUNITY THROUGH GREENSPACE Serving as visual proof of the Transportation for Livable Community Initiative (TLCI) plan in action, a new garden, sandstone wall cap, and freshly painted fence can be seen brightening up the East 55th Street and Euclid Avenue intersection. In addition, the five gardens along Euclid Avenue between East 57th Street and East 61st Street create greenspace enhancements around the vacant land awaiting development.

HEALTH-TECH CORRIDORCONNECTING INNOVATORS IN THE FIELDThe Health-Tech Corridor (HTC) project has enjoyed renewed vitality and energy this year with the award of a more than $500,000 grant over two years from the Cleveland Foundation and the hiring of the first Health-Tech Corridor director. In 2014, the HTC announced a partnership with OneCommunity, the City of Cleveland, Case Western Reserve University, and ideastream to wire the HTC with the nation’s first commercially available 100 gigabit fiber network.

YOUNG PROFESSIONAL GROUPCONNECTING FUTURE LEADERSIn 2014, the MidTown Young Professional Group was formed to connect ambitious, young business community members. This group has grown to 20 young professionals from MidTown businesses as well as businesses outside of the MidTown area. Currently, the group’s main focus is on improvements to East 46th Street, where The Chomp is held each summer.

CLEVELAND INNERBELT MODERNIZATION PLANCONNECTING COMMUTERS TO I-71, I-77 AND I-90The Cleveland Innerbelt Modernization Plan focuses on improving safety, reducing congestion and traffic delays, and modernizing interstate travel through downtown Cleveland. This State of Ohio investment is restoring and reconstructing approximately five miles of interstate roadways. In addition to two new bridge constructions to maintain I-90 traffic, the project addresses transportation operational, design, safety, and access hazards that severely impact the durability of the Northeast Ohio Innerbelt Freeway system.

ANNUAL HOLIDAY OPEN HOUSEEvery December, MidTown Cleveland, Inc. hosts a holiday event at its Agora office. This annual celebration is a great opportunity for stakeholders and neighbors to reconnect and meet new friends, while immersing into the holiday spirit.

MIDTOWN CLEVELAND HEALTHLINE CLASSIC 10K/5KEach year, the MidTown Cleveland HealthLine Classic 10k/5k race draws runners from all over Ohio and beyond. The course takes participants along historic Prospect Avenue, through Cleveland State University’s campus, and down Euclid Avenue.

Security continues to remain a top priority for

MidTown Cleveland, Inc. It is through our close

daily interaction with the Cleveland Police, our

security brown bag seminars, and our annual

Security Fair/Block Party that MidTown remains

one of the safest areas in Cleveland.

SURVEYING THE AREAWe continue our partnership with the Cleveland Police through the Camera Community initiative. The Cleveland Police maintains an inventory of security cameras in the neighborhood. This allows the police to be more effective in investigating incidents that may occur in the neighborhood by being able to access a wider selection of footage.

CODE ENFORCEMENTPROMOTING CONTINUED SAFETY MidTown Cleveland, Inc. continues to process code enforcement complaints with the help of our dusk-to-dawn patrol officers and neighborhood business reporting. MidTown is regularly ranked one of the safest neighborhoods in the city, and our attention to code violations means that visitors to the neighborhood will feel that sense of safety.

THE CITY OF CLEVELAND THIRD DISTRICT POLICE STATION AND CITYWIDE COMMUNICATIONS CENTER SERVING THE COMMUNITYMidTown is excited to be the new home of the Third District Police Station located at 4501 Chester Avenue. This state-of-the-art station serves as the base for over 300 police personnel and houses a community room for public meetings. The partnership formed between MidTown Cleveland, Inc., local businesses, and the Cleveland Police continues to implement a safe community.

DUSK-TO-DAWN SECURITY PROGRAMPATROLLING THE NEIGHBORHOODThe dusk-to-dawn security program allows members to collectively benefit from the services of Tenable Protective Services, Inc. Each day at 5 p.m., Tenable begins a patrol of the neighborhood and responds to any alarms. MidTown Cleveland, Inc. members also have the option of paying for an additional patrol of their building to receive alerts on any issues that occur on their property each evening.

MACE® SECURITY INTERNATIONAL, INC. 4400 CARNEGIE AVENUEMace Security International, Inc. is a diversified manufacturer and provider of personal defense and security products to consumer and business market segments under the world-renowned Mace® Brand. In January 2015, Mace Security International launched Nite Beams™, a new line of LED safety wear for road workers, first responders, and law enforcement professionals, as well as walkers, hikers, cyclists, and pets. Products include unique LED wrist and ankle bands, LED dog leashes and collars, and LED hats and vests.

ANNUAL SECURITY FAIR AND BLOCK PARTYAt the end of every summer, we invite you to enjoy a free picnic lunch, courtesy of local MidTown stakeholders, while meeting your neighbors at MidTown Cleveland, Inc.’s Annual Summer Security Fair and Block Party. Throughout the year, we assist members in keeping our area’s open spaces and streetscapes clean and visually attractive through MidTown’s code enforcement, volunteer clean-up events, and lawn care programs.

BUSINESS AND JOB ADVOCACY MidTown Cleveland, Inc. supports continued business and job growth by addressing your needs and protecting your interests. Our support services include active communication with the City of Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, and the State of Ohio to secure resources such as Innerbelt ramp access.

OMBUDSMAN SERVICES Our services provide members access to valuable resources that help businesses make necessary improvements. Services include requesting assistance from the City of Cleveland, reporting code violations, networking with your neighbors, and supporting business expansion or relocation to MidTown.

SAFETY & SECURITYWe work on your behalf to maintain a safe environment for your business, employees, and customers. Our security initiative is a cooperative effort between MidTown Cleveland, Inc., the Cleveland Police Department, Tenable Protective Services, business and property owners, tenants, and employees. This collaboration results in MidTown ranking as one of the safest areas in Cleveland on an annual basis.

PLANNINGThe MidTown Master Plan, and the work of its Development Committee, provides guidelines for development projects in our neighborhood. MidTown Cleveland, Inc.’s Master Planning activities shape the vision for the area and create an environment that is attractive to investors, lenders, business owners, employees, developers, and residents.

DESIGN REVIEW AND PLANNING“Design review” encompasses proposals for construction, exterior alterations, building demolitions, and signs required by the City of Cleveland to enhance the ambience, aesthetics, and property values of MidTown. Specifically, all-new construction and exterior structure alterations in the Euclid Corridor Design Review District are subject to design review. Our dedicated staff representative assists stakeholders through this process.

BEAUTIFICATION DAYTo encourage awareness and establish greater community pride in MidTown, we engaged in several community events throughout the year. Our annual Spring Beautification Day and graffiti abatement programs have resulted in the removal of graffiti and tons of trash. We assist members in keeping our area’s open spaces and streetscapes clean and visually attractive through our code enforcement and lawn care program.

ENDOWMENT FUNDThe MidTown Cleveland, Inc. Endowment Fund was established in 2013 and aims to provide a sustainable revenue source that will ensure our organization can vigorously continue its economic development work. Contributions can be made to the fund through The Cleveland Foundation.

CAPITAL FUNDThe MidTown Cleveland, Inc. Capital Fund was established at The Cleveland Foundation through a generous lead gift from the Frank H. and Nancy L. Porter Fund. The fund’s purpose is to support our permanent headquarters within the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Business Center at 5000 Euclid Avenue. Please contact MidTown Cleveland, Inc. to make a donation to the Capital Fund.

COMMITTEE OVERVIEW EUCLID CORRIDOR REGION DESIGN REVIEW Ensures commercial property improvements, new construction, fencing, signage, and demolition are of high standard and quality.

DEVELOPMENT Plans, initiates, reviews, and guides MidTown Cleveland’s development activities in order to increase investment and ensure MidTown remains a competitive business environment and high-quality urban district.

FINANCE Oversees the fiscal operations of MidTown Cleveland, Inc. and ensures its long-term stability.

GOVERNANCE Facilitates stakeholder involvement in program and service delivery and maintains an effectively functioning board.

MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS Connects with stakeholders and external audiences to position MidTown as a desirable location and solidifies the identity of the MidTown district.

MEMBERSHIP & FUND DEVELOPMENT Secures the financial support of area stakeholders, government entities and philanthropic organizations.

SECURITY & CODE ENFORCEMENT Continually improves and monitors the MidTown district’s appearance, safety, and security.

STAKEHOLDER SERVICES Ensures the organization offers high-quality services to meet the diverse needs of area stakeholders and engages them in the organization’s efforts.
