~ YOUR JUDGES ~

Dogs: Tony Burscough (Kilfinan)

With my wife Chris we have owned and exhibited Bearded Collies since 1987. In that time we have qualified 21 Bearded Collies for the KC Stud Book, 17 of which were home-bred. 5 have become UK Champions with 1 holding a dual title UK/Irish. The Bearded Collies we have owned and shown have won a total of 26 CCs and 22 Res CCs to date, our Beardies have also been campaigned in Ireland where they have won a number of CACIBs, and 4 have achieved Irish titles. Our most memorable achievements in the show ring have been Best of Breed at Crufts, Group 1 Blackpool Championship Show, overall winner of Welsh Contest of Champions, Welsh Top Puppy, Welsh Top Junior competitions. We have also bred 2 Bearded Collies that have achieved their Champion titles in Canada. In addition to Bearded Collies we have owned and bred Skye Terriers since 1990 and Chris handled a home bred Skye to achieve 1 CC, 3 RCCs and Best Puppy in Breed at Crufts. We currently own 2 Skyes and of these 1 has 1 CC and 1 Res CC and the other 2 Res CCs. We currently live with 10 Bearded Collies and 2 Skye Terriers.

We only breed when we want a puppy for ourselves and have recently bred the 6th generation Kilfinan Bearded Collie.

In relation to judging I had the privilege of awarding CCs for the 1st time at Border Union in 2012, and then at Birmingham National in 2014. I have also judged 4 Breed Club Open Shows and 216 classes of Beardies in the UK since 1994. Overseas I had the honour of Judging the Sweepstakes classes at the Bearded Collie Club of Club of Canada Speciality in 2007. In 2012 I was honoured to judge the Bearded Collie Club of Germany Speciality show. I am judging the Norwegian Bearded Collie Club Show in June 2016. Outside of Bearded Collies I have also judged classes of Skye Terriers, Portuguese Water Dogs (without CCs at Championship Shows) and a number of Working and Pastoral breeds at Open Shows. I am on the A1 lists of the BCC, SCBCC, BCC of Scotland, Midshires, NEBCOL and EBCA and the B list of the Skye Terrier Club and the Polish Lowland Sheepdog Club. I am the A3 list of the Portuguese Water Dog Club.

I am a currently Secretary of the Eastern Bearded Collie Association and the Rhyl Canine Society.

I enjoy judging, consider it an honour but also view it as an opportunity to gain further valuable experience and, hopefully, contribute to maintaining the breeds wonderful character and construction for future generations. I am very grateful for the opportunity to Judge Dogs at the Midshires Bearded Collie Club Show and am very much looking forward to the appointment at one of my favourite show

Page 6: MIDSHIRES BEARDED COLLIE CLUB - Fosse Datafossedata.co.uk/downloads/pdf/MIBC_AUG_16_Schedule.pdf · Club Show in June 2016. Outside of Bearded Collies I have also judged classes of

Bitches: Mrs Gill Burfitt (Breaksea)

I was given my first Beardie in January 1978 as a present, her breeder wanted her to be shown and that got Alan and I hooked.

We went on to breed our own Beardies and to date we have bred ten UK Champions, several in the US and others around the world, the top Norwegian Beardie for several years, the first Grand Champion bitch in the Czech Republic and also many others with CCs, RCCs, JWs and Stud Book numbers and dogs doing well in Obedience, Herding and Therapy all around the world.

I judged my first Championship Show in 1999 and since have awarded CCs in the UK several times and judged Club Shows in both the USA and Europe

Referee: Mrs Maureen Betts (Pipadene)

My first Beardie, Moonglow Magic Charm of Pipadene, came into my life in 1975. This was my foundation bitch and from that time Beardies have been a huge part of my life.

I always try to keep quality not quantity to the fore and have bred seven English Champions, American, Australian, German, Danish and Swedish champions plus many CC, Reserve CC and stud book qualifiers.

I commenced my judging career at Open show level in the early 1980s and having obtained the appropriate numbers in the breed was approved by the Kennel Club to award CCs in 1996. Since that time I have not only awarded CCs in the UK on a regular basis but have judged at many Breed Club Championship Shows throughout Europe, America and Australia. I was honoured to judge the American National Specialty in 2004 and believe the pinnacle of my judging career to date has been to judge bitches at Cruft 2011.

I enjoy all aspects of the dog scene, being a regular exhibitor and thoroughly enjoy teaching others the skill of ringcraft. I have been the trainer at my local club for over 25 years.

My love for the Beardie was founded on an unexagerated dog, that gentle knight, fit and light of foot, able to cover any terrain and I believe this is the grounding on which I judge.

and is unbeaten by any other puppy exhibited at the same Show. A puppy is a dog of six and not exceeding twelve calendar months of age on the first day of the Show. Where the Best in Show is a puppy it should automatically be awarded Best Puppy in Show. A dog beaten in competition for Best in Show may subsequently be exhibited in all competition for which it was previously eligible. The dogs declared Best in Show and Reserve Best in Show however, must not compete in any subsequent competition.

13. Best Veteran will be selected from the winners of the Special Veteran only i.e. classes 5 and 20. Best Vintage will be selected from the winners of the Special Vintage classes only i.e. classes 6 and 21.

14. Exhibits will not be admitted to Best in Show competition after a period of ten minutes has elapsed since the announcement that exhibits are required for judging, unless they have been unavoidably delayed by previous judging not being completed on time, and then only with the special permission of the Show Management.

15. Exhibitors must not pick up dogs by their tails and leads when lifting them. This is not acceptable. Exhibitors should note that such practice would constitute harsh handling and reports of such practice will be referred to the Committee under Kennel Club Show Regulation F11.

16. All exhibitors must be familiar with Kennel Club Regulation F (Annex B) - Regulations for the Preparation of Dogs for Exhibition.

17. Dogs in Vehicles on Hot Days. Your dog is vulnerable and at risk during hot weather and the Kennel Club offers the following guidance to help guide you through the do’s and don’ts travelling to and whilst at KC licensed events.

• When travelling to a show please take a moment to consider whether the route to the show is on a busy holiday route, and leave earlier to avoid increased time in traffic jams.

• If your vehicle is not air-conditioned seriously consider whether travelling to the show is a good idea at all.

Page 9: MIDSHIRES BEARDED COLLIE CLUB - Fosse Datafossedata.co.uk/downloads/pdf/MIBC_AUG_16_Schedule.pdf · Club Show in June 2016. Outside of Bearded Collies I have also judged classes of

• The vehicle should be as fully ventilated as possible, and plenty of stops should be taken, with lots of water available to drink.

• Ensure your dog is not sitting in full sunlight. There should be plenty of free flowing air around the dog.• When at the show, never leave your dog in the vehicle.• Keep the dog in the shade - take your own shade for example a large umbrella and always have plenty of

water available to drink so your dog stays well hydrated.• Avoid your dog taking part in unnecessary exertion, or from standing in exposed sunlight for extended

lengths of time. Remember, if you feel hot your dog is very likely to feel much hotter and dehydrated, and this could lead to

dire results. Please look after your dog’s welfare. WARNING: IF YOUR DOG IS FOUND TO BE AT RISK FORCIBLE ENTRY TO YOUR VEHICLE MAY BE NECESSARY WITHOUT LIABILITY FOR ANY DAMAGE CAUSED. Anyone whose dog is entered at a Kennel Club licensed event should take all reasonable steps to ensure the needs of their dog(s) are met, and should not put a dog’s health and welfare at risk by any action, default, omission or otherwise. Breach of Kennel Club Regulations in this respect may be referred to the General Committee for disciplinary action under Kennel Club Rules and Regulations. Exhibitors/Competitors are reminded that show societies have the right under Kennel Club Regulation to refuse any entry.

18. Not for Competition entries will be accepted. Details of each dog so entered must be recorded on the entry form and must be Kennel Club registered. Dogs aged four calendar months and over are eligible to enter Not for Competition at Single Breed and Sub-Group Shows.

19. No modifications will be made to the Schedule except by permission of the General Committee of the Kennel Club, which will be followed by advertisement in the Canine Press wherever possible.

20. All dogs resident outside of the UK must be issued with a Kennel Club Authority to Compete number before entry to the show/event can be made. All overseas entries without an Authority to Compete number will be returned to the exhibitor/competitor.

21. No animal other than an exhibit duly entered at the Show, will be allowed within the precincts of the Show during its continuance.

22. No Exhibitors Passes will be sent. Any Exhibitor wishing acknowledgement of entry must enclosed a stamped addressed envelope.

23. Should a Judge be unable to fulfil the appointment to judge, the Committee reserve the right to appoint another judge. 24. In the event of the Show having to be abandoned, the Committee reserve the right to deduct from the entry

fees paid such amount as is necessary to defray costs incurred. 25. Exhibitors whose cheques are returned by their bank for any reason will be liable to pay the amounts due, plus

any bank charges incurred. 26. The Committee is empowered to exclude or remove any dog which in the opinion of the Veterinary Surgeon

is not in a fit state for exhibition owing to illness, disease, vice or any other cause. Exhibitors are reminded that they are responsible for all veterinary fees incurred in respect of their dogs.

27. Any owner, competitor, handler or other person in charge of a dog is required to remove as soon as possible any fouling caused by their dog(s) at any Kennel Club licensed show within the licensed venue and within the environs of that event including car and caravan parks and approaches.

28. The owner, exhibitor, handler or other person in charge of a dog at Kennel Club licensed events must at all times ensure that the dog is kept under proper control whilst at the licensed venue, including its environs, car and caravan parks and approaches. This Regulation applies before (at any time during the set up period at the venue), during the event and afterwards (at any time during the breakdown of the event).

29. A dog may be disqualified by the General Committee from any award, whether an objection has been lodged or not, if proved amongst other things to have been: a) registered or recorded as having been bred by the scheduled Judge, this shall not apply to a Judge appointed in an emergency; b) exhibited without payment of appropriate entry fees.

30. Every exhibitor shall ensure that whilst the dog is being exhibited, its handler shall display the correct ring number.
