The total DRI production in 2011 rose to 73.3 million tons
setting yet another new record for the industry. Growth
slowed in some areas of the world, but in other regions
increased production more than counteracted the declining
locales. Although last year’s production rose 3 million tons
from 2010’s total production, it marks nearly a 9 million ton
increase from 2009’s 64.4 million tons.
Four nations experienced significant growth. These
included the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with an increase of
1.1 million tons, Venezuela, which made 0.7 million tons more
than the previous year, Mexico, which increased by 0.5 million
tons and Russia, which saw an increase of 0.4 million tons.
In the UAE, the growth was primarily due to the startup
of a new plant at Emirates Steel combined with the ramp-
ing up toward full production by another plant at the same
steel works. Venezuela’s growth is reflective of a partial re-
covery from a prolonged decline in production due to political
and governmental factors that the DR industry experienced
over the past five years. In Mexico, the growth was primarily
attributed to general economic recovery from the financial
crisis as both Mexico and its major market, the United States
continued their recoveries. Russia’s growth came from a
general increase in the capacity of the six existing plants as
they outperformed their prior best by over 8%.
As stated previously, some countries did see a decline
in production. Nations where there was significant decline
included India, which produced 1.45 million tons less in 2011
than in 2010, and Libya, which fell by 0.8 million tons.
India’s drop in production was a result of several econom-
ic forces. First, there was a slowing of the general economic
growth that has been developing for years. Although growth
has continued, it was not rising at as rapid a pace as previ-
ously anticipated. Also, some plants were not able to obtain
as much iron ore as they needed due to governmental restric-
tions on mining. In addition, governmental allocations were
placed on natural gas that gave higher priority to electric
power generation and to ammonia (fertilizer) production than
to the manufacture of iron and steel. India has become the
leading producer in DRI over the past decade due to the large
number of small rotary kilns; however, need for better quality
DRI is driving shaft furnace alternatives. With smaller amounts
of natural gas anticipated for industry use, coal-based tech-
nology options are currently being pursued by a few India
steelmakers.
Libya’s decline was a result of the national revolution
which affected all aspects of the country. The DRI facilities
at LISCO shuttered their plants early in the year and had not
restarted by the end of the year. At the time of this writing
(April 2012) it was reported that those plants have resumed

operation.
Altogether 2011 was up by 4% (2.87 million tons) over 2010’s
data. This was the ninth year out of the past ten that a new
world production record was established. While gas based
reduction grew by 7% from 52.3 million tons in 2010 to 55.9
million tons in 2011, coal based reduction by the rotary kiln
processes shrank by 5% from 18.1 million tons to 17.3 million
tons. The latter is related to the slowdown in India where the
great majority of rotary kiln plants are located.
As in every year since 2003, India was the leading producer
with 22.0 million tons, down from 23.4 million tons in 2010 but
still two times as much as the next highest country producer
Iran. Iran produced approximately 10.4 million tons. Mexico was
third top producer with production of 5.9 million tons, well above
2010, but still well below their all time peak of 6.5 million tons in
2004. Saudi Arabia and Russia were fourth and fifth respectively.
These five nations produced more than two-thirds of the world’s
supply of DRI.
FoRcesAFFectIngtheInDustRYThe slow growth of the developed economies continued to be
a drag on growth elsewhere in the iron and steel industry. As a
positive effect though, the price of iron ore declined in the latter
months of the year from the remarkable heights it had reached.
For instance, pricing for Carajas fines, fob Brazil fell from 274
cents per dmtu to 219 cents per dmtu. Even so, after the price
decline, pricing was still more than eight times what it had been
prior to 2004. The very high prices for iron ore continued to con-
strict margins for iron and steel making.

MIDRex• New modules begin operations The Jindal Shadeed plant at Sohar, Oman began operation at the beginning of the year and another plant in Mashad, Iran named IMPADCO began operation in the spring.
• Under Construction Nine modules are under construction. All are located in North Africa and Middle East region (Egypt, Pakistan, Bahrain, Iran and India). Their combined capacity is 11.44 million tons per year. Two of these new plants being built in India are utilizing coal (MXCOL® and COREX®/MIDREX®) to produce DRI in a MIDREX® Shaft Furnace.
HYL/energiron • New modules begin operations The second module at Emirates Steel in Abu Dhabi began operation.
• Under Construction Five modules are under construction. They are located in Venezuela, Egypt, USA and India.
• Decommissioned It was reported that two modules in Indonesia were decommissioned and dismantled.
Rotary Kiln Coal-based• For only the second time in twenty-five years output by rotary kiln plants declined as demand within India contracted.

2011 WORLD DIRECT REDUCTION STATISTICS is compiled by Midrex
Technologies, Inc., Charlotte, North Carolina, USA. The publication is distributed
annually with the first quarter issue of Direct From Midrex, and upon request
to other persons interested in direct reduction.
Midrex Technologies, Inc. compiles world DRI production data on an annual
basis as a service to industry.
Direct reduced iron (DRI) is a high quality metallic product produced from
iron ore that is used as a feedstock in electric arc furnaces, blast furnaces and
other iron and steelmaking applications. Hot briquetted iron (HBI) is a com-
pacted form of DRI designed for ease of shipping, handling, and storage.
Midrex Technologies, Inc. is an international process engineering and technol-
ogy company that provides global process technology solutions to various in-
dustries and is principally known for the MIDREX® Direct Reduction Process
that converts iron ore into a high-purity DRI or HBI for use in steelmaking, iron-
making, and foundry applications. Midrex continues to develop new technolo-
gies relating to its traditional iron and steel roots including eco-friendly tech-
nologies such as FASTMET®/FASTMELT® steel waste recycling processes and
ITmk3®, a breakthrough process for producing a pig iron substitute material.
The following organizations supplied or assisted in collecting data for this issue

WSD has audited Midrex’s collection and preparation process of the “2011 World Direct Reduction Statistics”, i.e. “The Booklet”. It is our observation that at the present, Midrex receives inputs from all over the world from virtually every known direct reduction producer. We have reviewed the data collection and preparation procedures and can confirm the documentation substantiates the accuracy of the data to be published in The Booklet. Based on the above, we are confident that The Booklet accurately reflects the world direct reduction industry in 2011.
