1. PRECONDITIONING & WEANING:A. Please begin feeding your bull calves supplemental feed before delivery to MBT.

Having calves that are bunk broke is beneficial, however keep them green. This practice will reduce the stress on your calves allowing them to wean without excessive shrinkage. It has also been demonstrated that calves undergo less stress if vaccinated at least 3-4 weeks prior to weaning and then receive a round of booster vaccine.

B. A calf may be weighed before or at the time of weaning. He should be 160 days of age but not more than 250 days of age at the time the weight is taken. Some breeds will accept weights as early as 120 days of age. If you are creep feeding your calves this summer or if you are creeping some pasture units and not creep feeding other pasture units, please list the creep-fed bulls and their contemporaries on separate field sheets.

C. We have found it a good practice to take weaning weights and give pre-conditioning vaccines in one operation and then put the calves back on the cows. By doing this you have a chance to get your weaning ratios before making the final selection of bulls.

2. ACTUAL BIRTH WEIGHT: A. Please be aware we have a strong buyer resistance to bulls that have an actual birth

weight of 95 lbs or greater. Red Angus buyers prefer calves less than 90 lbs actual birth weight.

3. ENTRY FORM: A. To receive the ultimate benefit from testing, it is recommended to test sire groups.

Sire groups of 5 head are preferable, groups of 3 or 4 are accepted, as well as entries of one or two head.

Awarded to those sale bulls qualifying on performance, semen evaluation and soundness

1. WORLD CHAMPION-PEN OF 3 in breeds with over 80 head on test. The award will be determined on combined average daily gain and weight per day of age. Top 3 bulls from one consignor.

2. SIRE GROUP OF TOP 3 HEAD (from one sire-one herd). The award will be determined by average daily gain and weight per day of age for breeds with greater than 100 head or a combination thereof for breeds with greater than 30 head but less than 100 head.

At Midland we prefer a modified live vaccination program. However, prior to implementing a modified live protocol (calves can only be vaccinated with a modified live if cows are on a modified live program), confirm with your local vet or contact

our feedlot vet, Dr. Bryan Roe at (406) 350-0525. We have listed suggested vaccination programs for modified live or killed depending on your situation.

Midland Bull Test has a proven program that measures the genetic performance potential of an individual, a sire group, or groups within a breed. Consignors are satisfied in knowing that when they bring their bulls to Midland, they will receive the optimum in care, attention, accurate data reporting, and promotion.

MBT has consistently been at the top or have topped the sales across the U.S. We have a large number of repeat sale buyers. We are a family operation dedicated to the improvement of the beef cattle industry and identifying superior performing individuals and lines-within a breed.

Management and performance techniques have been developed and perfected at Midland. We give Midland consignors the benefit of a “total performance” bull development center. Our theory has been to stay out of the “gain” race with other stations.

Our facilities and program were designed and built to emphasise the development of calves into sound, functional bulls. Yet, even with our moderate gain program, Midland has provided numerous trait leaders in the major breed sire summaries. We offer breeders the opportunity to performance test herd sire prospects and progeny groups in an optimum bull test environment.

ELIGIBLE AGES OF BULL TO ENTER TESTRegistered Angus, Red Angus, Salers, Simmental, Gelbvieh, South Devon, Murray Grey, or Hereford Bulls born between: DECEMBER 15, 2013 TO APRIL 15, 2014

Please read the following rules carefully.1. ONLY THE TOP 70%-80% SELL - The top 70%-80% will sell on performance,

determined on average daily gain and 365 day ratio.

2. GENETIC DEFECT CARRIERS - PLEASE TEST SUSPECT GENETIC DEFECT CARRIERS PRIOR TO CONSIGNING BULLS TO MBT. Animals that are known genetic defect carriers will not be eligible for sale. *Includes DDC

3. BREEDING SOUNDNESS EXAM - All sale bulls must successfully pass the MBT BSE - Minimum passing scrotal circumference is 32 cm at 365 days of age.

4. MBT INELIGIBLE BULL - Midland Bull Test reserves the right to remove any bull from the sale the exhibits soundness, structure, or disposition problems.

5. MBT SALE ORDER - The sale order will be determined by Midland Bull Test Index. MBT reserves the right to select or reorder the first 20 - 40 bulls.

Why we recommend a Modified live vaccination program, however it’s not required. 1. Killed viral vaccines require 2 doses, not 3-4 months apart but 3-4 weeks apart.2. Killed viral vaccines provide slower response times than MLV.3. Killed vaccines do a poor job stimulating cell mediated responses, critical for IBR, BRSV and PI3 protection, whereas MLV vaccines will stimulate both CMI and humoral responses.

1. NURSING RATIO: NR is capped at 115. If actual NR is higher, 115 will still be used in MBT index calculations, however actual NR will be listed. (For ET and twin calves, we use Dam’s average NR in calculations.)

2 . BIRTH WEIGHT GROUPS: - Breeds with over 40 head on test will be split into Birth Weight Groups

A. ANGUS BREEDERS: The bulls that are +1.8 and less for birth weight EPD and a birth weight of 84 lbs and under, will be indexed separately from the Angus bulls that are above +1.8 for birth weight EPD or above 85 lbs. actual BW.

B. RED ANGUS BREEDERS: The bulls that are -1.0 and less for birth weight EPD and a birth weight of 84 lbs and under will be indexed separately from the Red Angus bulls that are above -1.0 for birth weight EPD or above 85 lbs. actual BW.

C. SALERS BREEDERS: The bulls that 7/8% PB and greater will be indexed separate from bulls that are less than 7/8 % PB. If there are fewer than 30 bulls that meet this criteria the break will move from 7/8% PB to 3/4% PB. Groups will then be split at breed average birth weight and BW EPD.

D. GELBVIEH, SIMMENTAL, HEREFORD, MURRAY GREY AND SOUTH DEVON BREEDERS: The bulls will be split at breed average birth weight and BW EPD.

Awarded to those sale bulls qualifying on performance, semen evaluation and soundness
