October has presented us with some enjoyable weather and some great scenery. I al-
ways enjoy seeing the various colors of the tree leaves. It is a beautiful time of the year!
The end of the first nine weeks was October 18. Report cards will be mailed soon. The fall
parent-teacher conferences will be held in Glenfield on Thursday, November 9, from 3:30-9:30 PM.
These conferences are for all students (grades K-12). Please allow time for the elementary teachers
to set up as they are traveling from Binford. Elementary teachers will be in the gym and the 7-12
teachers will be in their respective classrooms. If you can not attend parent-teacher conferences, we
would request that you contact your child’s teachers and discuss your child’s progress with them.
The football team and elementary girls’ basketball teams have completed their seasons. The
volleyball team has completed the regular season and will be heading into the District Tournament
beginning October 26. The Volleyball District Tournament will be played in Oakes and pairings for
the tournament will be posted soon. Please see our school website for more information.
The installation of the wood floor in the high school gym has been completed. It looks amaz-
ing and the basketball teams are anxious to begin their seasons on the new floor!
Congratulations to Jakenda
Short for reaching 1000 assists
during the Mustang volleyball
season. Coach Briss presented
her with a team-signed ball at
the last home match.
Close Up 2017-2019 -By Mr. Ringstad
Fifteen Midkota students have signed up for the Close-Up Trip that will visit Washington, DC and New York City in the spring of 2019. Close-Up provides students an opportunity to take an educational trip to our nations capital. Our students will experience some of the history of our great nation, witness how our policy-makers conduct business, interact in a mock congress, deal with social issues along with other students from around the country, and experience some culture that is very different than to that of our Midkota School District. Each student is expected to pay for the cost of their trip through a series of fund-raisers. The cost of the trip
will be slightly over $3,000 per student. We have al-ready supplied the food for the Binford Bull-A-Rama (a big thank-you to the Binford Rodeo Club for the opportunity), sold concessions at home Volleyball Games, sold magazines, and cookie dough. We will be conducting several other fund-raisers between now and our trip. We would like to thank everybody for their loyal support for a great program. There could be opportunities for Midkota patrons to be chaperones on the trip. Please contact me if interest-ed.
Students enrolled in Close-Up (from left to right in the photo) Jake Timm, Lane Kulsrud, John Edland, Brianna Grandalen, Mariah Topp, Brenna Anderson, Jory Boote, Cassidy Hoyt, Meanda Rickford, Jacob Johnson, Tara Otto, Brandon Aguirre, Kennedy Gjovik, Christian Cruz-Zaun, and Desiree Parsons

It’s Beginning to Sound a Bit Like Christmas!
-Mrs. Mary Harvala
Yes, the music students at Midkota are slowly adding Christmas music
to their daily lessons. The concerts seem to be a long way down the cal-
endar but with the days we are away from school for Veterans’ Day and
Thanksgiving we know that the rehearsal time is short.
The elementary students are going to sing us around the world using
children’s author and illustrator, Iza Trapani’s rendition of “Jingle
Bells.” You’ll enjoy her additional lyrics as they guide our annual Christ-
mas concert. It will be on Tuesday, December 5 at 7:00 P.M.in the Bin-
ford gym. Grades Kindergarten through six will perform. The third and
fourth grade recorder choir is on the program and the fifth and sixth grade band will set the mood
at the beginning of the concert. All students are to wear dress clothes. Please – no blue jeans or
casual t-shirts.
The high school band and choirs will present “The Colors of Christmas” on Friday, December 15 at
7:30 in the Glenfield gym. How many holiday songs mention colors? Join us and see how many you
recognize! An added bonus will be seeing the new music equipment and the new gymnasium floor.
All boys in the band and choirs, grades 7 – 12, should wear long sleeve white button shirts, black
pants, and black socks and shoes. Girls are to be dressed in black, either a black top and black
dress pants or skirt or a black dress, and black shoes.
We look forward to seeing you for these annual holiday programs!
Parsons Attends Governor’s School
Desiree Parsons, (third from the left) a Midkota junior, spent time this past summer on the NDSU
campus and experienced North Dakota Governor’s School.
NDGS is a 6 week program for highly motivated North Dakota
students. 50 students are offered instruction in architecture, land-
scape, engineering, English, tech, lab science, mathematics, and
visual aids.
Each student goes through an application and selection process.
Desiree reports, “It was an unforgettable experience. Great les-
sons, great friends, and I would recommend it for many of our stu-
dents.”
SEAL! North Dakota Dental Sealant &
Fluoride Varnish Program The North Dakota Department of Health will once again be providing our
school with free preventative dental care. Midkota Elementary students have
the opportunity to receive sealant and a fluoride treatment free of cost.
Please be on the look out for the parental consent form to be sent home
Monday, Oct. 30th. We would like them to be returned by that Friday. Once
we have a count of how many students desire services, we will schedule a
date and let you know when they are going to be in Binford. Thanks! ~Mrs. Dockter

Catapult lab
Our most recent project in phys-
ical science was to build a catapult to
launch projectiles and record the dis-
tance. This was a huge project for all of
us. It took a lot of time and effort to
complete, but on test day we all had it
done and the launches were a really cool
thing to watch. It really shows you how
so many different brains think, and what
interests them. For instance, Brooke and
Ethan had a multi-pult, Matt and I had a
huge but simple catapult, but then Clare
and Gage had the smallest most simple
catapult and it shot the marshmallows
the farthest! Matt and I had a really
good turn out for our project and our farthest launch went 450 cm. I think labs are very important because it brings fun and
creativity into the classroom, while you’re still learning more from experience than you would normally learn from a textbook.
- Janae Johnson and Matt Sabinash
Catapult
For the past few weeks in physical science we have been working on catapults. We decided
to build the mulitpult. The multipult is a catapult that has an automatic launching system, it also has
five arms to launch your object. When we built it, we learned that building catapults was not as
easy as it seemed; at the end we ended up breaking some rubber bands, as well as a dowel. The
results turned out well although we thought it would have ended better. Our longest launch was
542 centimeters with a height of 72 centimeters. In conclusion building the catapult was a very ex-
citing experiment, and we hope to do more things like it in the future.
- Brooke Topp and Ethan Utke
Catapult Experiments
In our Physical Science class, the Midkota students built catapults for a sci-
ence experiment. At the beginning catapults were picked and built by groups of lab partners. The class
thought the catapults were a competition to see whose catapult could launch the marshmallow the fur-
thest. Everyone was trying to make the biggest and the best catapult except for us. We built one of the
simplest and smallest catapults out of the group. Even though our catapult
did not launch the marshmallow the farthest, our catapult had the best accu-
racy of them all. - Nicole Beckley and Tanner Kulsrud
David
To start with, every Midkota Freshmen had to look up ideas for a cata-
pult. Then, after choosing one we had to write a list of all the supplies
we needed. After receiving the supplies, we built our catapults. Next, we chose the name David for
our catapult. David is the smallest of all the catapults constructed in our class. However, what David
lacked in size it made up for in power. Finally, after recording all of the launches David ended up
having the farthest launch out of all the other catapults with 739.5 cm. - Gage Wells and Clare Witt-
man

High School Gets New Gym Floor By: Jake Timm and Mitchell Eikom
The high school gym will be getting a new gym floor beginning the first week in October. The new wood
floor will replace our old, worn out, plastic tile. Some games and practices during the month of October will be
affected and moved to Kensal or Binford. The time frame it will take to install the new floor will depend on the
weather. If it is too humid, it will take longer because they need to let the floor dry before they can paint the lines
and seal it. The Midkota students are all very excited to see our new gym floor.

Webster’s Dictionary defines Empathy as understand-
ing or entering into another’s feelings.
CLIMB Theatre is a non-profit chil-
dren's theatre company that performed for the
Midkota Elementary students on October 24th. This
year’s topic was Empathy. CLIMB taught lessons
on this powerful life skill to students from Kindergarten all the way to 6th grade. Danielle
and Nikki, the team of actors who came to the school, went directly into the classrooms
and facilitated interactive lessons using creative drama and theatrical aspects to engage,
educate and entertain the students. CLIMB Theatre thrives on being a leader in innova-
tive theatre program that propel audiences toward positive action.
Please ask your student to
tell you what they know
about empathy and en-
courage them to think
about how it would feel to
walk in someone else’s
shoes.
