Helping the helpers

• Innovation and improvement to public health systems in developing countries is essential to achieve MDGs 4 and 5 and most of the other MDGs.

• Most of the innovation is funded by foreign donors through global health aid programs. Countries pay for health staff salaries and operating costs and do not invest in innovation, staff development or continuous improvement programs.

• The involvement of local health professionals in the forefront of any intervention is essential to sustain results.

• the support they get through these programs is still limited and piecemeal leading to unsustainable results in many cases.
