ISAT’s and the Larger School Picture (This is an updated article from the February 2013 issue of The North Star.) At this time of year ISAT’s typically loom large over the educational landscape in Illinois, and so too for the staff and students of Middle School North. This week we’ll make final preparations in terms of organizing all of the materials; we’ll remind and encourage students; and teachers will reinforce testing strategies and approaches. Next week the school schedule will be altered for four days. Here’s the schedule: Tuesday, March 5 – 6th/7th/8th Reading and Math Tests Wednesday, March 6 – 6th/7th/8th Reading and Math Tests Thursday, March 7 – 6th/7th/8th Reading and Math Tests Friday, March 4 – 7th Grade Science Test Testing begins at 7:40 sharp each day. We’ll serve a morning treat each day as well as mints during testing (did you know that brain research supports the positive impact of mint and/or cinnamon on cognitive activity?) in order to help students get in a great frame of mind. We may have other motivational “surprises” in store to encourage and acknowledge student effort. In short, we’ll do all we can to help students do as well as they can. Of course, parents can help by making sure that students get a good night’s sleep as well as a good breakfast during the testing period. Also, it is important for students to get to school on time, even a bit earlier than normal, in order to settle into the day and prepare for the daily two- hour session of testing. While recognizing the significance of ISAT’s, it’s also important to keep the tests within a larger perspective of the school and the District’s mission. Of course we want our students to do well, and we are confident that they will. Yet, we also know that a paper and pencil test cannot capture the entirety of a student’s growth and development over time. Indeed, how many of us dreaded the pressure of standardized tests when we were growing up and may have lamented the judgments that came along with the results? Moreover, we will administer the tests realizing that this is the last administration of ISAT’s. Next year we will administer the PARCC assessment (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers, http://www.isbe.net/assessment/parcc.htm ). Accordingly, we will be mindful of the test results, but our primary focus will remain squarely on the day-to-day growth and progress of our students. We will trust that high quality instruction coupled with a middle school environment that is responsive to the varied needs and interests of our adolescents is the best recipe for success. …and we will keep striving to do this to the best of our ability. ISAT’s….here we come and there you go. Go Wolves!! P.S. Soon parents will receive information about the 5Essentials Survey: Organizing for School Improvement. A Note from Your PTO President Hello MSN Families! Spring is just 24 days away!!! Although it does not feel like spring, there is a light at the end of the tunnel!! Our wonderful PTO continues to work hard in providing wonderful programs and activities for our students. Thank you to our phenomenal Activity Night Committee. Our students enjoyed the Peace Love and Rock n' Roll Party on Friday, February 21, 2014. We truly appreciate all of your careful thought and hard work you put into our activity nights. We also appreciate our Hospitality Committee in coordinating a delicious soup luncheon this week to our wonderful MSN teachers and staff. We also appreciate everyone who generously donated items to make the luncheon successful. Our PTO sponsored 8th Grade Celebration will be held on Friday, June 6, 2014 from 7:30-9:30pm at Middle School North. The committee is hard at work planning a wonderful evening for our 8th graders. We will need a tremendous amount of help and will be requesting volunteers shortly. You do not have to have an 8th grade student to help. This is a great opportunity to see what your student will have to look forward to! We thank you in advance for your help! Please consider attending our March 18, 2014 PTO meeting at 7:00pm in the MSN multipurpose room. We will be voting on two very important items. First, we will be presenting our spring grant requests from our teachers and staff followed by a vote. Secondly, we will be voting on our new MSN PTO executive board. If you are interested in holding an executive board position, please contact me at [email protected] by Monday, March 17, 2014. Once again, the MSN PTO Executive Board extends our appreciation to all of our wonderful volunteers!

I would like to thank all the volunteers this school year. Our programs would not be able to run nor be successful without everyone's help. As the 2013-2014 school year comes to a close, we need to look at the committees for next year. Please look at the 2013-2014 PTO slate on the next page and verify

whether or not you are going to stay on your current committee. If you see your name in bold, this means you have verified this position for the 2014-2015 school year. In addition, if you see an open position or a committee you are interested for the 2014-2015 school year, please let me know. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions. Again, I thank everyone for their involvement and I look forward to another successful school year. Stacey Marguerite MSN PTO Co-Vice President [email protected] (847)421-1076

Solo & Ensemble contest is again a success for MSN Band, Orchestra, and Chorus!

On Saturday, Feb 22, MSN band, orchestra, and chorus students participated in the annual IGSMA Solo & Ensemble Contest. This year’s contest was hosted at Daniel Wright Junior High in Lincolnshire, IL. Sixteen schools participated, with over 1000 pieces being performed. When the students arrived at Daniel Wright JH, they were greeted by hundreds of other student musicians from schools in the Northwest suburbs. Performances were held in classrooms with a judge, who rated students on intonation, rhythm, stage presentation, and musicianship. Students from MSN did an outstanding job as they performed music they had been perfecting in their sectional classes over the last several months. The enthusiasm of the MSN students was clearly evident as they began to return from their performances with high scores. As has been the tradition, Middle School North did very well. Eleven Band students earned perfect scored events, 63 earned first place (“Superior”) ratings, and 21 earned second place (“excellent”) ratings. The orchestra students came home with 7 students achieving perfect scored events, 63 earned first place ratings and 18 earned second place ratings. Three chorus students earned perfect scores, 23 received first place ratings, and 7 earned second place ratings. Congratulations to all the hardworking Band, Orchestra, and Chorus students. The following students earned perfect scores at contest.

From MSN Band: Mitch Bader, Ethan Ecklund, Nolan Foreman, Payton Gagliardi (2), Kyle Grenier,

Nick Hervatin, Eddie Mihok, Chad Oliver, Andrew Pytlak, and DJ Young.

From MSN Orchestra: Chloe Fletcher, William Gilbert, Brennan Groble, Suzanne Maniak, Andrew Orals,

Prithu Patel, and Josh Pollard.

From MSN Chorus: Taylor Buergey, Elizabeth Crutchfield, and Meggie Fewkes.

Many Congratulations to the fine musicians from MSN who worked so hard to prepare for solo & ensemble contest, and who are testaments to the many years of success of District 95 music programs.

Yeagor is the winner of our school-wide spelling bee. Nolan is the runner-up. The school-wide spelling bee took place on January 13 after school. Yeagor will advance to and compete in the Sectional Contest later in February. It was quite a difficult competition. There were more rounds than ever before. Also, a special shout-out goes to Neha Praseed for hanging in the competition for a long time!

Use a Target REDcard Open a Target Red Card account or use your current one and Middle School North can receive 1% of your eligible purchases. Simply sign up online under the “Take Charge of Education” program at www.target.com/tcoe and designate Middle School North. Target tracks purchases and then sends a donation check directly to the school once a year.

Corporate Matching Funds Program Most large corporations, and many smaller ones, support charitable giving by offering to match donations given by their employees to tax-exempt organizations such as our PTO. You can double, or even quadruple, the amount you have donated during our No-Stress Fundraiser if your company has a charitable matching gift program. Check with your Human Resource department. If you work for a smaller company, a simple inquiry, or a request in writing, may result in a donation for our PTO. Matching corporate gifts can have a huge impact on what our PTO is able to do for our students, faculty, and community. Please take a moment to see if the company you work for is able to help.
