I can’t believe that it’s already the third week for the middle school. September 17th is the cur-off for

progress reports. Science Fair information will go out this week. Outdoor Lab is coming in October for the 6

th grade. I’m still working on making sure we have enough adult chaperones. The 7

th grade will be going

to Dinosaur Ridge during September, which should be a lot of fun. The following is a brief schedule of what is happening in science this week.

We are having a good start to the year. Let’s keep it up. You make choices daily how you do. Decide now to do the best you can every day and the rest of the year.

Your parents and teachers want you to do your best, so “the choice is yours”.

Have an awesome week, the choice is yours.

Social Studies with Mrs. Hughes [email protected] x514

All Classes

All grades are working on a basic geography unit. Classes are moving through it at different paces. The focus is ba-sic skills that will be beneficial for all future units.

6th

Grade Social Studies

This week we will be looking at latitude and longitude, continents and oceans, and using keys/legends to read maps.

7th

Grade Social Studies

This week we will be working on reading maps using keys/legends, how the earth and sun relate, how time zones work, and looking at different types of maps.

8th

Grade Social Studies

This week we will be looking at different map projections, what mental mapping is, and what GPS and GIS are. The final for this unit will be on Friday. Students will receive all of their work back on Tuesday.

All Classes:

Because of the nature of this class being a Social Studies class, it is expected that students will have homework throughout the year that will require them to have internet and encyclopedic resources available to them on a short notice basis. This means they may need to use the local public library, resources from home, and if nec-essary using a friend with these things available. I will try to give you as much warning as possible.

All students need to have their own atlases in class beginning September 2nd

.

I do not return tests and quizzes in the Monday folders to parents. Instead, students will receive them and keep them in their binders so that they are able to study for them for their final exams since almost all of the content on final exams comes straight from their tests.

Continuation Info

Our first meeting will be in early October

Weighted Grades

I do weight my grades for academic classes as follows: Tests/Projects = 40%

Quizzes/Homework/Classwork = 35%

Notes/Participation/ = 25%

This does make it so that you can’t add up their total number of points and divide it by the total points possible and calculate a correct grade. Please email me if you have any questions

Therefore, it is extremely important that if a student does not understand, or has any questions about the novel,

that they come talk to me as soon as possible. Throughout the unit, students will focus on applying literary con-

cepts to what they read. In addition, this week students will complete assignments in their Word Wisdom work-

books .

This week in Math we will be finishing up Chapter 1 and begin reviewing for our test. Students will have their first grades entered this week so make sure to check Infinite Campus to ensure your student is off to a good start!!
