This 1998 Annual of the Middle Florida Baptist Association is dedicated in memory of the many loyal, dedicated men and

women who have served Christ through their churches and our association in the past, and in honor of those who continue to serve Him in like manner today. The books of Heaven bear their names.

May we continue to serve in a way that will extend that list.

Discipleship Training There is no such thing as a perfect

disciple but, in John 15:7-14, Jesus gives us a glimpse of one. As He speaks of Himself being the true ville and His di sciples the branches, He describes five characteristics of true disciples:

· They remain or abide in Christ (v.7) · They bear fruit (v.8) · They are obedient to Him (v. I 0) · They have His joy (v.ll) · They love others (vv.12-!3) It's a picture of a transformed life,

and it is attainable by all believers. Paul adds more insight in Romans 12:2, we are not to allow any part of our life to be molded by the world, we are to be "being changed" into the image of God in Christ. This is the essence of discipleship. The greatest need in our churches today is to have our people; especially our teachers and leaders changing daily into the image of Jesus.

We are like a bottom line, so here it is: [or our folks to have a consuming passion to be like Jesus and be transformed into something they could not become on their own, they must become disciples. At some point they must commit to the journey of obedience which will affect their personal value system

and behavior, their family and church life and how they interface with the world. Discipleship is at the core ofleading our people to be energized to evangelize, to be restored to righteous and abundant living, and to be brought to the place of joyful and meaningful service. Paul says it be s tin his magnificent obsession (Phil. 3:8-12) " ... that I might know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His suffering ... "

This last year Brother Kell from Quincy came and presented a DiscipleMart. Several churches were represented as around a dozen were in attendance. The meeting formerly known a "M" Night was well attended as D.T. and Prayer and Spiritual Awakening combined efforts. Several D.T. directors attended the Key Leaders Workshop held at Faith and were introduced to many of the new products that Sunday School Board and LifeWay Press has available. As always, I am available for on site consultations and advice on how to "tweek" your D.T. ministry. Keep on keeping on as kingdom workers and carrying out the Commission or making disciples.

Pastoral Ministries Pastoral Ministries is about the great

est need in the chureh today -LEADERSHIP. Leadership has the ability to see the vision of pastoral ministries become reality. The definition of pastoral ministries concerns the GUIDING, PROTECTING, FEEDING and NOURISHING of a church in order that the church may grow, develop and reproduce itself in the world. Little of this will happen unless there is leadership. Where hcalthy leadership is present thc people are obedient to God. This work is supported by the Pastoral Ministries Department of the Florida Baptist Convention.

Woman's Missionary Union 1997-98 Our 1997-98 themc was "Come Go

With Me". Jesus invited the children to come to Him, His disciples to follow Him and believers to emulate Him. The challenge given to us is to extend His invitation to those outside the walls of thc church; to follow His example in ministry.

The Day of Prayer was observed at Faith Baptist Church in November. First Baptist ChUfCh, Madison hosted our February Rally with Jan Morris being our speaker sharing about her mission trip

to China. Cindy Goodwin was aUf special guest at our May Rally at Lee First.

We had a wonderful Prayer Retreat at Pickett Lake in April with Frances Shaw leading that retreat. A rally for Acteens was held at Elizabeth in May. Smiley, the Gospel Clown provided the program.

We also cnjoyed the joint Brotherhood/WMU Rally in July. Bobby Tolar did a great job of organizing that and Greenville did a splendid job of hosting it!

Family Life The year 1997-98 was another year

of much activity, growth and ministry in the realm of the Family Life Department. The ever expanding need for family ministry in Florida as well as around the nation has motivared both churches

Conferences on the stalc level held at Lake Yale and Blue Springs Baptist Assemblies continue to be well attended. The Couples Renewal Retreats will be available again in early 1999. This growing ministry offers worship time, work~;h()ps for enrichment, fellowship with other couples, and training in marriage and family skills, as well as support groups to strengthen families with particular problems.

.loan amI I had the privilege of helping conduct the couples renewal retre,lt [ilis past January at Blue Springs. The courses we helped introduce included: I) .l3uildilJgJ,{elationship..B. - learning and sharing the communication skills of marriage. 2) New Faces In The Fri'!.m.~ -examining marriage and parenting issues or blended families. 3) Ih.e Fi~~--L!)ve Languag§ - identifying your own love language as well as that of your spouse. Informative as well as enjoyable. We endeavor to offer more training and encouragement in the area of parenting, feeling this is so needed in modern America. Early childhood education with a Christian foundation is the challenge of the day if we are to build stronger and more effecti ve families.

Several couples from our association attended the couples renewal retreat. We would like to encourage every couple no matter what age to attend the retreat in 1999 at Blue Springs. You will find it rewarding, refreshing and inspirational.

We will continue to offer training and encouragement in the area of parenting by emphasizing a new offering entitled Shaping the Next Generation as well as one entitled Building Strong Families. Early childhood education with a Christian foundation is the challenge of the day if we are to build stronger and more effective families.

In 1999, the Family Life Department wil1 sponsor ,1 con ference on Christian Apologetics and Ethics emphasizing the need to understand current issues and seek answers needed by the church in facing loday's culture wars. We will also endeavor to address the need for premarital counseling by providing a plan Jnd training for pastors ancl swff members. This would be addressed through the Directors of Missions and associalions as they wish to develop this needed emphasis.

More time has been set ~side by the Family Life Department for consultation on the associationallevcl aod with local churches and pastors. We would like to be a part of your life and ministry. Let LIS serve you ancl let us work together to strengthen marriages and to be the families God would have us be. If Joan and I can help your church in any way this year, please let us know. May the ministry of every church honor God and strengthen families.

Philip Howell of New Home told of his mission experiences in Honduras and Wayne Sapp of Pinetta First shared his experiences in Haiti. The main speaker of the evening was Rev. Jimmy Deas, Pastor of Westwood Baptist Church in Live Oak. [-Ie told of his recent trip to China and described {he Chinese as "Such as sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, being bound in affliction and iron" (Psalm 107:10). Men from 14 churches and 3 visitors were presem for an attendance of 84. There was an offering in the amount of $212.00

Greenville Baptist hosted our annual joint meeting of the Brotherhood and

WMU on July 21, 1998. Kelly Kinsey and Erika Scott gave a short talk on the preparations they were making for their upcoming {rip to Romania as Short Tenn International Missionaries with the Campus Crusade for Christ International. Rev. Tom Kyzer. State Director for Prayer and Spiritual Awakening, brought a message on prayer from the life of Elisha that challenged and inspired. At the conclusion of the service Brother Kyzer led the congregation in prayer for Erika and Kelly, asking God's blessings on {heir mission to Romania. The 129 people present included 1 visitor and delegadons from 14 churches. The offering for the evening was $246.31.

As you may remember, our special fund was deple{ed at {he July 1997 meeting. There has been no expenditures for the fund this year. The current balance is $255.00 which is the total of this year's contributions.

I look forward to serving you in the next church year and hope to see all the churches of the association represented at Faith (my home church) for our next meeting on January 19, 1999.

Stewardship "A celebration of Joy" emphasizes

that there is joy in being a Christian and that our dedication to Christ will cause us joyfully to give our lives and possessions. "God loves a cheerful giver." (2 Corinthians 9:7)

People and ministries become the direct beneficiaries of our giving. Specific budget items such as the Cooperative Program and your local association, enable your financial girts to implement the ministries of your church, association, state convention, and around the world.

The Stewardship Departmem is committed to developing new and contemporary methods and materials for your use. Among the NEW MATERIALS presented to paswrs, church staff and laypersons this year were: Stewardship ser-

mons Fill! Pockets alld Empty Hearts by Dr. John Sullivan. Benchmarks of Stewardship .Ministry in Florida. Building Blocks of Stewardship Development and Ministry Budgetillg, along with church stewardship committee helps, s{ewardship education, ideas, and estate stewardship material and a stewardship book, Until Then, which explores the apostle Paul's teachings on giving and contentment.

Challenge to Build: To date, the Stewardship Departmem has made available ten trained consultants who have led 99 CHALLENGE TO BUILD (CTB) Campaigns in Florida Baptist Churches. In the last 12 months, J 3 churches have completed CTB programs, and two campaigns are presently in progress. In Middle Florida Baptist Association, three churches have comple{ed (CTB) pro-

grams and one is considering. When a church uses (CTB), it should expect spiritual renewal to occur in church members' lives and thousands of dollars to be saved in interest charges. Challenge to build can be used in any size church in Florida.

In 1998-99, we have two very important stewardship training sessions scheduled for pastors and churches. First: February 23, Ministers, Churches and

IRS. Second: Pastor's Stewardship Conference on May 25.

Stewardship in the spiritual growth and development of the individual child of God and in his church is such an important matler that Paul devoted two whole chapters (8 and 9) to it in 2 Corinthians. Stewardship includes your attitude, your viewpoint, the condition of your soul, the giving of your self and your possessions.

Annuity Geraldine Stokes

Associational Clerk

At his first meeting with employees, Annuity Board President, O.S. Hawkins challenged the staff to measure themselves by the Biblical description of Israel's King David who served "with the integrity of his heart and skillfulness of his hand."

Outstanding investment earnings and generous gifts in 1997 allowed Annuity

42

Board Trustees to enhance the quality of life for our Annuitants and Relief recipients_ Effective January I, 1998, nearly all of the 28,000 annuitants in pay status received a permanent 10% increase in benefits_ Relief benefits rose to $200 per month for individuals and $265 per month for couples. The Adopt An Annuitant benefit was raised 50%

from $50 to $75 each month. The Church Annuity Plan is the re

tirement plan designed for pastors, other ministers and eligible employees. The Annuity Board in partnership with state convcntions administers it.

In 1997, the Annuity Board paid ov~r $300 million in retirement benefits. withdrawals and Relief 10 Southern Baptisl church and institutional employees. UnfOltunatcly. nearly 10,000 retired ministers or their widows received no more that $200 a month in benefits. The Annuity Board and statc annuity representatives make vigorous educational and promotional efforts to encourage adequate contribmions to individual accounts, in the Church Annuity Plan and Convention Annuity Plan. Wc arc rcminded by Jesus that the poor will always be with us. These dear servants of yesterday must not be forgotten while we prepare for th~ tomorrows of current ministers and other staff members.

The Southern Baptist Convention Cooperative Program provides more than $1 million annually that is distributed in Relief payments to some 700 couples or individuals in desperate financial need. The Annuity Board adds an equal

amount from the Retired Ministers' Support fund, and another $2.5 million in AdoptAn Annuitant benefits. Every eem given for Relief or Adopt An Annuitant finds its way to a needy person or couple. The Annuity Board is dependem on direct gifts from concerned individuals and groups to provide about $3 in addition to each Cooperative Program dollar they receive. The Annuity Board paid more thm $106 million in insurance benefits last year, preventing financial disasters to persons and families stricken with illness, disability, accident or death. No Cooperative Program money is used for Annuity Board operations.

Florida Baptist Convention Statistics As of July 31,1998: Tllerc arc 3,348 active participants in the Church Annuity Plan with 63% of churches participating. 1,673 persons are receiving retirement benefits. The Adopt An Annuity ancI Relief Ministries helped 20 I persons.
