EAST BEECHBORO PRIMARY An INDEPENDENT PUBLIC SCHOOL Mid term NEWSLETTER 2nd March, 2017 Message from the Principal Dear parents, staff and students, 2017 Contributions A sincere thank you to all those parents who have paid their child‟s 2017 School Contribution. These funds form a vital part of the school budget and are used to assist in supplementing programs and resources within the school. Although these funds are voluntary, every payment received is most appreciated and makes a difference to what we are able to offer to all our students. Our collection rate is currently approximately 55% and I am hopeful that this will increase. If you would like to make payment or discuss payment arrangements, please speak to the office staff. Statements will be sent home shortly. Parents who paid their child‟s contribution by the end of Week 4 (24th February) had their names entered into a draw to win $100 cash. The winner was drawn yesterday at the assembly and congratulations goes to the Matapo family. Thank you to our P&C for donating this prize. NAPLAN Students in Years 3 and 5 will take part in NAPLAN testing in Week 3 and 4 next term. The tests assess student knowledge and skills in numeracy, reading, writing, spelling, punctuation and grammar. The test results provide a snapshot of a student's achievement in comparison to all students of the same year level across the country. Results also assist in identifying students who require additional support and helps in identifying strengths and weaknesses in teaching programs. The best way to help your child to prepare for the tests, is to ensure that Mathletics tasks set by their teacher are completed along with nightly reading. Parent information brochures will be sent home shortly. Parents wishing to withdraw their child from NAPLAN testing are asked to speak to a member of Admin or your child‟s classroom teacher. This is a matter for consideration by individual parents in consultation with the school and are intended to address issues including religious beliefs and philosophical objections to testing. We urge parents who wish to submit an application for withdrawal to please do so as soon as possible (no later than 31st March). World’s Greatest Shave Harry Doggett in Room 9 is taking part in the World‟s Greatest Shave by colouring his hair in support of the Leukaemia Foundation. The Leukaemia Foundation is Australia‟s peak body for blood cancer, funding research and providing free services to support people with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and blood related disorders, and their families. If you would like to donate, a collection box has been set up in Room 9 and in the office. Well done to Harry for showing his support for this very worthy cause. Harmony Day Harmony Day will be celebrated on Wednesday 22nd March. The message of Harmony Day is „everyone belongs‟ and it aims to engage everyone to participate in their community, respect cultural and religious diversity and foster a sense of belonging for all. As part of our Harmony Day celebration, children are invited to either dress in a traditional costume from their heritage or wear an orange (the official Harmony Day colour) shirt/t-shirt (no offensive logos or statements). Please note that this is not a free dress day. If your child does not have a traditional costume or an orange shirt to wear, they are required to attend in school uniform. National Day Of Action Against Bullying The seventh National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence will be held on Friday 17th March. This day provides a focus for schools to say Bullying! No Way whilst highlighting their everyday work to counter bullying and violence and reinforcing the message that bullying and violence at and outside of school is not okay at any time. Students are encouraged to wear a white shirt (no offensive logos or statements) in support of this very important message. Parking Parking around schools is always an issue and is only manageable with the patience, understanding and cooperation of all the families in the school community. Parents are reminded that the section at the front of school is a designated Kiss and Drive area. It is intended that the traffic at the front of the school flows and as such, vehicles should not be parked or left in this area. Please also be mindful of our neighbours and refrain from parking on private property. The staff car park is not to be used as a thoroughfare. Students and parents entering the school are to use the gate at the front of the school, not the staff car park gates. Finally, parents are reminded that they are not to park in the staff car park. Only members of the school community who have a valid ACROD sticker are permitted to enter the car park and use the disabled parking bay. Your support in this matter is greatly appreciated. Public Holiday Parents are reminded that this Monday, 6th March is a the Labour Day Public Holiday. School will resume for students on Tuesday 7th March. I wish you all an enjoyable long weekend. Bike Safety Parents and students are reminded that although bike racks are provided at school, it is essential that bikes are safely secured with a lock/chain. Bikes that are parked on the school grounds are done so at the owners risk. The Department of Education does not provide insurance cover for student bicycles parked on school property.

CONCERNS / COMPLAINTS If at any time you have a matter which you feel you need to discuss please contact the school. Please note that ALL formal complaints should be marked Private and Confi-

dential and sent to the Principal.

Reminder Parents whose children require a Medical Action Plan (for asthma, allergies or anaphylaxis) are reminded to please return these to the office as soon as possible so that the school has up to date details on how to manage these issues. If your child has a

condition that requires an action plan and you have not received one, please see the office staff. This information is vital in ensuring that students receive the appropriate care in managing these conditions.

School Parking Parking restrictions are put in place near schools to protect children when they are either dropped off or picked up from school. Parking signs Parking signs show if there are any parking restrictions in the area. You should always look for and read parking signs when parking your vehicle. If you do not comply with the parking signs you may be infringed. A „No Stopping‟ sign will show you where vehicles are not permitted to stop for any length of time, unless avoiding a collision. Signs may also have day and time restrictions. This means the parking prohibitions apply only during the times and days shown. Stand vehicle facing the wrong way Parked vehicles must face the same way as the direction of the traffic flow and not facing oncoming traffic. When dropping your child off to school or collecting them at the end of the day, it is much safer for your child and other motorists if they exit/enter the car from the kerb side door (“safe door”). This keeps them safe from oncoming traffic and reduces their risk of being injured. Verge parking Verge parking within the City of Swan is generally regulated with signage. Where no signage is in place, the adjacent land owner/occupier should be approached for consent to park on the verge.

For additional details, please visit the City‟s website www.swan.wa.gov.au

or call the City of Swan on 9267 9267.

Monster Easter Raffle Our Year 5 and 6 students will be holding the annual Monster Easter Raffle to fundraise for future Senior School activities. Raffle tickets will be sent home shortly. Each ticket is 50 cents. All prizes will be drawn at our Easter Assembly on Wednesday 5th March.
