French Student Exchange

All French students at our College have the opportunity to participate in a student exchange to Reunion Island, France. Reunion Island is off the East coast of Africa, close to Mauritius and Madagascar. This year the College saw our very first language student fly to tropical France for a month of adventure, fun and French language immersion. Georgia had a great experience staying with a French host family and made friends for life.

Page 3: Mid-Term Break Outdoor Education - Year 12/10 Leadership ... · Zenith Music, Claremont . Best of ... Year 10 Soccer Academy Winter Uniform Mr Damian Stefanoff 20 ... Elite Dance

I encourage all French students to take up this opportunity to broaden their horizons while having fun and learning. Applications for the 2018 exchange program are now open. Please see Miss Harrison for further information. Mademoiselle Cat Harrison Languages Coordinator My Student Exchange Program to Reunion Island was an educational and life-changing experience. Spending a month in a foreign country is an exhilarating experience and I learned a lot about the culture of Reunion Island and the French language. Being a tropical island, I spent a lot of time snorkelling, hiking and mountain walking, and was lucky enough to climb to the crater of Volcano Piton De La Fournaise. I, and 40 other students from the Tong-Koala Association, was placed with a host family, with whom I spent the month. I highly recommend this exchange to Year 9 to 12 students who are studying French, as this exchange will further your language skills ~ Georgia Ridley, Year 9 Student.

Japan Ski Tour 2019

After the success of the 2017 Japan Ski Tour in January with over 60 students attending, we are pleased to announce that we will be conducting another Japan Ski Tour in January 2019. We are excited to offer this opportunity to students who will be enrolled in Year 11 and 12 in 2019, and who will be graduating from the College. Students attending the ten day trip will enjoy skiing/snowboarding the amazing slopes of the Hakuba region, exploring Tokyo and spending a day at Disneyland, along with many other traditional Japanese experiences. Students interested in the 2019 Tour may collect more detailed information, together with an expression of interest reply slip from the College office. We look forward to providing students with an unforgettable experience. Mr Neil Bright and Ms Karolina Lewy Ski Trip Coordinators

Catholic Performing Arts Festival What an incredible week at the Catholic Performing Arts Festival. Percussion solos started off the week at Trinity College, East Perth. John Bone, Jac Donnelly, Liam Engelbrecht and Lillian Hutchinson each performed a drum kit solo playing technical pieces that really entertained their audience. Each of the students received an outstanding report and should feel extremely proud of their achievements.

On Tuesday 8th August, the Swing Band and Jazz Ensemble performed at Sacred Heart College, Sorrento. The evening included a variety of styles and genres from many participating schools. Our bands performed covers of Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond and Skyfall by Adele, as well as a Jazz number that showcased the technical abilities of our students through some incredible solos. Senior drama students finished off the week performing monologues at Chisholm Catholic College. Best of luck to all students in their performances over the coming weeks.

Soccer Report At the start of this week, the College had three teams in the last 16 of the state (the northern quarter finals), which is a great achievement. On Monday 7th August, the Senior Girls travelled to Mercy College. Three of the girls were unable to play, but the team went in with great confidence and determination. The girls kept working hard and improved as the game went on, scoring two of the last four goals, thanks to Elissa Price and Jen McGlynn. Despite the loss 2-8, they never stopped until the final whistle. On Wednesday, 9th August the Year 8 boys played host to Ballajura Community College. The first half was a tense battle with Ballajura scoring early and our boys equalising only for it to be ruled offside. A few minutes later we levelled the score, however this was short lived as Ballajura quickly took the lead back. Just before half time, Luke Moyser scored his second goal to make it 2-2 at the break. In the second half a few things did not go our way and the opposition scored two late goals to win 2-5. The Year 8 boys are to be commended on their efforts and the progress they have made this year. The Year 8/9 Girls played against Peter Moyes on Thursday, 10th August. Peter Moyes took an early lead in the fifth minute, but almost immediately the score line was levelled via a cracking Jen McGlynn goal. The girls scored the next two goals to take a 3-1 lead into half time. The second half was a real end to end, physical battle, with neither side willing to budge. With no score in the second half, our girls won 3-1, taking them to the last eight in the state. An unbalanced draw means that the Year 8/9 girls are in the South of the River draw and are due to play South Coast Baptist College, who are over 90km away. It is a huge achievement to make the last eight in the state, so congratulations girls and best of luck in the next round.

Alex has been a real source of inspiration for our girls and her positive influence will be sorely missed. Thank you, Alex, for all you have done for the Academy and the girls. Mr Damian Stefanoff Soccer Academy Coordinator

Award for Educational Architecture The Paul Rafter Centre at Irene McCormack Catholic College has been awarded a 2017 Western Australian Architecture Award from The Australian Institute of Architects WA. Parry and Rosenthal Architects, West Perth, received the Award for Educational Architecture for the impressive multi-use double court gymnasium with climbing wall and linked outdoor abseiling tower, and a multi-purpose, two level learning wing accommodating classrooms, multi-purpose spaces, dance, music, band rooms and a recording studio.

Page 9: Mid-Term Break Outdoor Education - Year 12/10 Leadership ... · Zenith Music, Claremont . Best of ... Year 10 Soccer Academy Winter Uniform Mr Damian Stefanoff 20 ... Elite Dance

The award jury was impressed by the “comprehensive resolution of this project by Parry and Rosenthal Architects. It is a skilfully executed work of architecture that modestly expresses the values of the client, establishes a new public face for the school and surpasses the project requirements on an enjoyment, aesthetic, functional and environmental level”. Students, staff and the wider College community are delighted with sport and learning spaces provided in the new Paul Rafter Centre and the way in which the building serves as a dynamic new landmark for the College.
