ServingasamajorbusinessandtransportationhubNewarkshouldbeaprosperouscity.OnalargescaleNewarkcanbeseenasafunctionalcity,withabusyairportandabustlingdowntowncenter.Thequalityandvalueofhousingarerising,andmostschools’graduationrateiscomparabletomajorcitiesnationwide.However Newark is home to high crime, unemployment, and poverty. Thecrimerateisoneofthehighestinthenation.Overonethirdofthepeopleareinpovertyandthebestpayingjobsdon’tbelongtoNewark’sownresidents.Mostneighborhoodsareboundphysicallybyhighways,majorroads,transportation-buttherealboundariesarenotthephysical.Therearesocialboundariesthatareinvisibletothenakedeyeandarelessapparentinsurveysanddatasheets.

Lookingbackon itshistoryweseeNewarkhasalwaysbeenanactivecity. Settlement along the Passaic river begins, churches are built, there isgrowth.TheeraofchurchandcolonyhelpssparkthebeginningofthetownshipofNewark.Thelocationdrawsindustry,railroad,andtrade.TheportofNewarkbecomesoneofthemostactiveontheeastcoast.PeopleareonceagaindrawntoNewarkforopportunity.Thiseraofindustryandtradecausesgrowthinthenewcity,anditexpandsonceagain.Theinlandareasontheoutskirtsofthecitybecomehighly residential.These areas become suburbs. Inwardmigration ofpeoplebeginstoslowresultinginaneraofcommerceandsprawlwithinthecity.TheseNewarksuburbsdon’tlastlongastheybecometownshipsoftheirownorannexedtoaneighboringone.Thecityisindecline,riotsbreakout,peoplebeginleave.Howeverthebackbonesofthecity,thefinancialdowntown,theairport,therailroad,theport,helptokeepthecityaliveduringaneraofurbandecline.

In recent years there have been attempts at re-energizing the city.Newsportsvenues,face-liftstovariousinfrastructure,alladdressingthelargescale. The issues at hand can only be seen through a smaller microscope.Theunemployment rateat 11% ishigher than thenational average, as is therate of crime at 5% and poverty level at 33%.There is a lack of motivationdeveloping throughout the city. Rentals take up 70% of housing. Singleparents make up 1 out of every 3 households. Over 20% of populationhasn’t completed high school. The people of this city need a new plan forsuccess, a little bit of guidance to kick off the era of Re: EnergizingNewark.

LOOKING BACK IN TIME....

1600sCHURCH & COLONY ERA

The area that is now Newark was founded by colonists migrating from Connecticut. They chose the location due to its proximity to the Passaic riv-er, and its potential for trade and trans-port. One of the first structures built was a church, a key factor in attract-ing residents during this time period.

By this time there was a great in-flux of people to Newark. Its prox-imity to water based trade routes made it ideal for industries and businesses to set up shop in New-ark. This time period’s growth could be attributed to the amount of new jobs that the township had to offer.

Newark saw its biggest rate of growth both in people and area. People be-gan to settle as jobs were plentiful. With introduction of the automobile, residents began looking for places to live further from the city centers.

During this era we see the most dy-namic changes. Newark begins to develop into a transportation hub. Its downtown becomes a busy financial center, second only to New York in the immediate area . Heavy migrant workers looking for work causes the long time residents move out, while most keep their high paying jobs.
