NEWSLETTER MID-NOVEMBER

2017

S INCE LAST TIME. . .

On November 4th, the tri-choir rehearsal at Southernhay URC

was a great success, even though many of us realised how

much work was still needed!

The committee has sadly accepted the resignation of Ron Taylor

and we thank him for his enthusiasm and hard work, not least

with the anniversary tote bags. Ron remains a member and will

probably still sell you a bag if you ask.

We now have two vacancies on the committee. If anyone is will-

ing to serve, we are able to co-opt them until the 2018 AGM .

Volunteers, please.

We welcome Ellie Trelawny to a (for us) new post —Minuting

Secretary. Following normal practice, this post is held by some-

one who is not a committee member.

NOVEMBER 25TH CONCERT UPDATES

This is a first - two newsletters in the same month!

2. SCORES:

All three choirs normally use black music folders, and it is expected that most singers will use them. However, a black covered score is acceptable.

The score for Old 100th should be inserted into this so that it doesn’t show. Use the folder / black score for both pieces.

Copies of the Old 100th will be collected in at the interval. Afterwards, Jan will be collecting copies of Sea Symphony in Kalendar Hall.

1. FINANCES:

With a ticket sell-out plus a generous grant from the RVW Trust, Christine is confident that the tri-choir venture will at least break even. Many thanks to Christine for acting as overall Treasurer for the concert.

I think I’ve got this building right

To anyone who has just bought a folder—sorry, but they are good quality and good value too.

The Chapter

ended and of

a wondrous experience

NOVEMBER 25TH CONCERT (continued)

Pick up / Set down stops (both journeys):

1. Budleigh Salterton Town Hall

2. Salterton Road, Littleham Cross (end of Barnfield Ave)

3. Exmouth centre, The Strand

4. Exeter Road (end of Iona Ave)

5. Lympstone, Saddlers Arms

6. South Street, Exeter (just up from Kalendar Hall)

I am told this is the Kalendar Hall.

The Christmas Market has started, so parking in central Exeter is going to be well.… difficult. If you have yet to decide your travel arrangements, there is plenty of space on the coaches. (Larger coaches cost little more than the smaller ones, so we went large). I’m going to park off Salterton Road and get on at stop 2 and there are plenty of similar alternatives. So - avoid the fuss and come by bus.

4. KALENDAR HALL

Firstly, my apologies for misleading you in the last Newsletter about

what the Kalendar Hall looks like.

Unfortunately, the Hall is in use until 1.00pm, though it will be

available after the rehearsal. So, on arrival at the Cathedral, please

take your evening dress to the Chapter House. All your kit can be

stored there - black tie, coats, etc. It will be unlocked during the

afternoon and it will be fairly hectic, so we would be grateful if you

could keep your stuff to a minimum.

However, members may have a small handbag with any valuables with them at all times. These should not be left unattended and of course are your responsibility at all times.

After the rehearsal, you will need to transfer your kit to Kalendar Hall. There is a room upstairs in where gents can change. The loos are downstairs. The Hall will, of course, be locked during the concert.

3. Coach transport We have hired coaches from Dartline.

The cost will be £10 per head, single or return.

The outward start from Budleigh is at 11.00am The return from the Cathedral is at 10.00pm

The Cathedral has an exhibition on at the moment

and, of course, we want the visitors to have a wondrous

experience without having to hop over elegant jackets,

black ties, etc.

NOVEMBER 25TH CONCERT (continued)

5. Final Rehearsal

ARRIVAL: You should aim to be in the Cathedral by 12.15

(and not 12.30 as in earlier Newsletters).

SEATING: On entering the cathedral, please store your evening dress

in the Chapter House and find a seat in the Nave. You will be summoned

up to the staging voice part by voice part, starting from those with

mobility problems, etc.

Please remember where you ended up and who you were next to.

You may wish to line up with a friend that you are used to singing with,

but most sections are only 3 people wide, so this might not be possible.

We are now one choir so you should feel happy sitting next to anyone!

There will be 3 rows on the flat in front of the raised seating, and as many

independent chairs as we need. We do encourage those that are

willing / able to go further back.

The Seating Plan as shown in the last Newsletter (version 10) is not

gospel. We are up to at least version 12 (with major changes, I hear)

Line up for the Right / South side will be in the Chapter House, but where

the rest of us will line up is yet to be confirmed.

We will exit from the back. Please stay seated until the row behind has

emptied. Again, please remember how this went. Timing is crucial as we

want the interval to be minimal.

PROGRAMMES: Programmes will be available near the Chapter House

for you to collect after the Rehearsal.

Muff says: “Laurence and all the

team are very aware that people do need to

feel comfortable, so we are doing our

utmost best to make this happen”.

TOILETS: These are really limited, so please go before

hand. The show must go on!

In extremis, exit via the South Transept into the Cloister

area. They are to the south of the Cloister Area., mid way

along.

There is no code applicable as the loos will be open to

visitors to the Christmas Market as well.

There are, as mentioned, loos in Kalendar Hall.

Looking south across the Cloister to the loo block

CAROL SINGING - MONDAY DECEMBER 18th

Name that singer competition anyone?

NEWSLETTER

NOVEMBER 25TH CONCERT (continued)

• Everyone should be in Kalendar Hall by 6.45 ready to move across just after 7pm.

• There will be no warm up, so everyone is responsible for

doing their own. • We will not be wearing distinguishing items - as we are one

choir! This is a recent change. • Laurence would prefer not to have bottled water on stage for

the performance. Thank you. • Muff says: ‘Do remember that Laurence would like us to sing

as much as possible of this with our heads out of the books. So please learn what you can!”

• If you remember where you stood and who you stood next to

in the rehearsal, and also how you processed off, it will save a lot of time at the Interval.

• At the end of the concert, please remain standing and do not

6. CONCERT PROTOCOLS

So no “touch of red”

7. AND FINALLY…. Each choir is holding its own collection for the RNLI during their final rehearsals. There will be a chance to contribute during the Monday 20th rehearsal. Does anyone own a sou’wester that could be loaned as a receptacle? Thank you.

As I write, we have 22 volunteers, with a good SATB balance. We are a couple of carol books short, so if anyone unable to join us can lend us their copy of Carols for Choirs 1 (the green book), I promise to look after it and return it as soon as I can. Thanks. We shall sing at Exmouth House at 6.30 pm, arriving a little earlier to set up, and walk across to the Hospital at 7.30 pm.

WINTER CONCERT - THE CREATION

How to get a Creation Score before Jan gets you one in December 1. Go on-line and Google: “ Haydn creation score imslp” 2. Click the first result (Die Schöpfung) 3. Ignore “Performances” and move down to “Sheet Music” 4. Click the third tab “Vocal Scores (18)” 5. Scroll down to the tenth Complete Score, which should look like this: 6. Click the blue words “Complete Score” to start the download. If you don’t give a donation you have to wait 15 seconds.

7. Once it has downloaded (dark grey background), right click anywhere on the title page and choose Save as… 8. Select the location where you want it saved and change the cumbersome filename to

something more useful (I have a “Downloaded scores” folder, with files arranged alphabetically by composer. This one is called: Haydn J - Creation English)

As far as I can see, it’s exactly the same as my printed Old Novello edition; in fact a facsimile. If you are looking for a good video performance to sing along to, try: www.youtube.com/watch?v=l07oRR4u-rk

☺ Good soloists.

☺ Each of the start times is listed , so you can easily find whichever chorus you want.

The words are not always the same as the Old Novello

Our orchestra won’t be that big!

Note that this edition is in the Public Domain

OUR NEW WEBSITE

As reported in the September Newsletter, we have decided to replace our aging website. While much still remains to be done, the new site is now published at: www.exmouthchoral.org

Please have a look. Comments welcome. Both sites, old and new, remain online and both have the Creation midi

rehearsal files
