I am extremely honored to serve as your President this year. A special thank you and deep gratitude must be expressed to our Past President and 2010 Chapter Chair, Lisa Scala of Herman Miller. Under Lisa’s leadership our chapter has developed, advanced and held on to our membership base through the trying and troubling economic times of 2009. I must also thank our chapter sponsors from 2009 and welcome many of them back for 2010, and some new ones. As you all know, without the generous support of our many sponsors, our chapter could not provide the high quality education, networking and community re-investment activities that are the backbone of our chapter and our association. A final thank you to the numerous volunteers who participate on the committees that make our chapter one of the most successful in the CoreNet community. Without the tireless work and contributions of our chapter volunteers, we simply could not be successful in advancing the real estate profession in the Mid-Atlantic Region. While 2009 was truly challenging, we must not look to the past, but must become razor focused on the recovery and the future. In my view, the future of our economy, our profession and our chapter and association is bright and full of opportunity. But, we must seize the opportunities and create an even greater value proposition for our members and our prospective members. We can achieve this together as a collective body of passionate real estate professionals committed to the goal of advancing knowledge, interaction and professional development for our membership. I invite you to become involved, active and vocal in your support and the expression of what we can do as a team to deliver the value you seek and deserve from your membership. I know that budgets have tightened and many of you are faced with difficult choices every day, and may be forced to consider not renewing your membership. Many times, you may not have a choice as reductions in association memberships and travel are dictated, but you can and should challenge the notion of allowing your membership and involvement in our network lapse or expire. Many management consultants advise that ongoing professional development for employees is an expense companies cannot afford to cut. An economic slowdown is, in fact, the best time to invest in resources that will prepare your business for future success. When the recovery is realized, those that stay connected and involved in their industry through education and networking will be in a better position than their competitors. The Mid-Atlantic Executive Team and Board of Directors have developed an exciting and meaningful calendar of events for this year, and I encourage you to come out, get involved, and take full advantage of this year’s offerings. Fellow Mid-Atlantic CoreNet Members, Welcome to the 2010 year and thank you for your continued support and involvement in our dynamic and exciting chapter. I must also thank our chapter sponsors

from 2009 and welcome many of them back for 2010, and some new ones. 2010 is under way and we are planning on adding even more value by delivering more quality events. To do that,

we need the help of energetic volunteers just like you! The following committees could all use support with current

objectives and help in creating new ones.

Communication/Public Relations:

Helps raise awareness of the chapter by writing press re-leases, taking photos at events, writing event recaps for the website and newsletter, and generally getting the word out about the Mid-Atlantic Chapter.

Education:

Provides engaging and industry relevant speakers at en-gaging venues in support of professional development for members. To do this they need help identifying and secur-ing speakers, developing topics for sessions, and all the as-pects of meeting planning for the events.

Membership:

Members are the life blood of our organization. This com-mittee helps grow the chapter by identifying new members and keeping other members engaged. You may be asked to help with calling members whose membership will soon expire, contacting prospects and explaining the benefits of membership. Also included in this committee is the Young Leaders Sub-Committee whose focus is identifying poten-tial members new to the industry and helping them get a jump start on their professional development.

Special Events:

This energetic and creative group plans all the fun stuff. It is hard work, but make no mistake it is outweighed by the rewards. Subcommittees include:

Senior Corporate Real Estate Executives Reflections of 2009 & Perspective for 2010

On February 25 members of the corporate real estate community gathered at the Waterview Conference Cen-ter for CoreNet Global Mid-Atlantic Chapter’s monthly educational event. The topic was Senior Corporate Real Estate Executives Reflections of 2009 and Perspective for 2010. Speakers included Frank Cuevas, SVP Real Estate Portfolio, Deloitte Consulting Services, Jim Young, VP Corporate Facilities & Services, Marriott International and Chuck Gambrill, Direc-tor, Facility & RE Operations, Fisher BioServices. The panel’s moderator was Barry Beswick of CorraLuna Consulting.

The panelists shared their strategies for getting through 2009 and what they anticipate for 2010. Specifically: Jim Young discussed Marriott’s new re-organized global business structure focused on dramatically improving the efficiency of their business operation, while assessing opportunities in a down market. Jim expressed Marriott’s positive view for the future and how the recession has caused them to become more efficient and thoughtful when considering expansion plans.

Frank Cuevas discussed Deloitte’s strategy to rethink and question all business expenses and raise the bar for all vendors supporting the business. Additionally, He explained that Deloitte is now in the mode of preparing for the rebound and while they are not focusing on the past year, they will not forget the effects the recession has had on their firm or on their customers. Deloitte sees opportunity on the horizon…how’s that for “frank” talk.

Chuck Gambrill indicated that Fisher Bioservice’s unique capital intensive facility requirements have caused them to rationalize ex-pansion plans, while insuring existing facilities are well utilized. Chuck commented that before the recession, consolidation of facilities and operations was not necessarily a business imperative, but 2009 changed all that and with the help of some really smart service partners, they’ve been able to significantly improve their operations and the bottom line. Chuck also stated that he has come to realize how similar Marriott and Fisher’s perspectives are….a full biotech facility is just as precious as a full hotel.

New and Improved Sponsorship Program

The Board of Directors and Sponsorship Committee are pleased to announce a new and improved sponsorship

program this year, aimed at providing our sponsor partners year-long return on their investment with the Chapter. While

there will still be plenty of opportunities for sponsorship of individual events, the program now takes a holistic look at the full calendar of Chapter Events, and blends Sponsor

recognition with participation throughout the year. Benefits of the new structure include 1 or more memberships to

CoreNet Global, tickets to the Annual Gala, Golf Event and Educational events, as well as recognition on the website

and at all events.

New and Improved Sponsorship Program

The above site provides information about the available levels for Annual Sponsorship, which runs from April 1,

2010 to March 31, 2011. Please visit the Chapter website to see the calendar of events. Contact Sponsorship Committee

Upcoming Events

They say that necessity is the mother of invention, and boy, have we been in-venting! Alternative workplace strategies, creative cost-cutting, sale/leaseback scenarios, energy efficiency increases, new property disposition techniques – we’ve used the strategies we know to keep our companies lean and competi-tive in the face of extraordinary pressure. But now, as the signs of recovery begin to grow, we find ourselves asking “What happens now? Instead of just finding ways to stay competitive, how do we move our organizations forward into a still uncertain future?”

Most people believe that we will likely never return to pre-recession “business as usual” – that the global business landscape has changed forever. We have two choices – we can wait until we figure out what the “new normal” will be, or we can lead our organizations with courage, using this unprecedented time in our history to engage our creativity, ingenuity, and energy in brand new ways.

Spring is a time of renewal and rebirth. At the CoreNet Global Summit in New Orleans, we will recognize the realities of “business unusual”, but with the cer-tain knowledge that we can and will find real innovation to take us into the next evolution of our companies, our industry, and ourselves.

CRE’s role in supporting Corporate Mandates: Change Management, Measuring Success and

Building MomentumApril 26, 2010

Once an organization adopts a policy mandate, CRE professionals are a key part of the team responsible for implementation. Meeting the intent of these mandates can have a substantial impact on procurement, management and maintenance of real estate, as well as the workplace culture. It requires chang-ing operations, changing what gets measured and changing occupant behavior. Many of the most current and common mandates relates to LEED and Green practices for real estate operations; however mandates occur in many areas of corporate culture – Break down silos! Consolidate supply chains! Move into owned space! Join us for a discussion on how to take a mandate and turn it into a catalyst for organizational change. We’ll include a case study of the Virginia Department of Transportation and their lessons learned on how to go green. We’ll also share best practices on driving compliance with a broad range of corporate man-dates. ....UpcomingEventscontinuedonpage5
