A.School Visits

Education Day will start with designated group visits to the schools listed below. Participants will proceed directly to the pre-assigned schools. Every participant must present a driver’s license or other official photo ID to the security camera at the main entrance before being granted access to the school building. Please wear your GNL badge at all times. The session leader who will be at each school is also listed, along with her or his cell phone number. If you have problems or questions before arriving at your designated school, please call this person.

Please carpool. Parking is limited in some locations. Groups have been assigned according to zip code and proximity of addresses to facilitate carpooling. Please be on time.

As described below, you will go from your designated school to Lorenzo Walker Technical College. Maps to each school and from each school to Lorenzo Walker Technical College are provided at the end of the packet.

Dress Code: Business casual clothing, comfortable shoes. There will be tours on foot. Air conditioned settings may be very cool. Please be prepared with a sweater, shawl or jacket.

B. ThemeThe Learning Continuum in Collier County: How Our Community is Organized to Support and Encourage Student Success

GoalsThe Educational Framework: Identify challenges to student success, factors that contribute to student success, and opportunities for GNL classmates’ involvement in promoting student success.

ObjectivesOur objective is to provide a summary of educational programs in Collier County through:

1. Observation of teaching and learning in Collier County Schools2. Presentations by education officials as well as leaders from agencies and

charitable organizations supporting student success in Collier County3. Presentation of volunteer efforts to support student success

D.Biographies

Barbara Tyrrell, Executive Director, Fun Time Early Childhood AcademyBarbara Tyrell is the Executive Director of Fun Time Early Childhood Academy, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization serving 96 students from low-income working families in Collier County. Fun Time has served multi-cultural low-income working parents and their preschool children with quality childcare and early education programs for over 55 years. She became the Executive Director of Fun Time in 2015, after serving as the Director of the Early Learning Coalition of SW Florida.

She began her career in health maintenance organizations and moved from the position of member service representative to Regional Vice-President of Strategic Planning. When she moved to Florida in 2003, she changed career paths to real estate investment and later taught journalism at a private school. Barbara was hired as the director of development at the school, which also had a preschool. The preschool enrollment increased from 57 to 150 under her guidance and continues to operate successfully today meeting all regulatory requirements.

Barbara was born in Westchester County NY and attended school in New Jersey. She graduated from the University of New Hampshire and did graduate work at Seton Hall University in New Jersey. Barbara has raised five children—three biological sons and two adopted daughters. Additionally, she is a member of Class XXII of Greater Naples Leadership.

Melanie Fike, Principal, Parkside ElementaryMs. Fike has been an educator for twenty-one years, with the past fifteen years in Collier County Public Schools. Her experiences include classroom teacher, Reading Coach, Assistant Principal of Curriculum and Instruction, and Principal. She currently serves as a District Trainer for Love and Logic and Clinical Education. Ms. Fike was recently an active participant and a facilitator for the Florida Department of Education Dr. Brian Dassler Leadership Academy. For the past eleven years she has been dedicated and committed to the District while serving as an administrator at the elementary level, most recently as the Principal of Mike Davis Elementary.

Kevin Huelsman, Principal, East Naples Middle SchoolMr. Huelsman has had extensive experiences as a long-time educator in three different states. He began his teaching career in 1977 in Southern California where he received his training. He taught for 10 years, then moved on to administration. He then served as a Middle School Assistant Principal and Principal for 5 years in California before moving to Massachusetts where he served as a Principal for 7 years in Nantucket and Cape Cod. He has worked with Collier County Public Schools for the past twenty years.

While in Collier County, his experiences include Dean of Discipline, Assistant Principal for Curriculum for the Alternate Schools, Executive Director of Secondary Programs and Principal at Gulfview Middle School. His most recent position has been the Principal at East Naples Middle School since July 2017.

Dr. Tobin Walcott, Principal, Golden Gate High SchoolI was born and raised in Northern Michigan and moved to Naples in 2004 and began teaching at Immokalee Middle school, where I remained for 8 years. I taught everything: Physical Education, English, TV production, Career Development, Science, and Reading. While at IMS I took a teacher on special assignment position which

allowed me to implement the RTI (response to intervention) and PBS (positive behavior support) programs from the ground up to better serve the needs of our students. I then decided to embark on an administrative career and became the Dean of Attendance and Discipline at IMS for 2 years.

In 2012 I was promoted to Assistant Principal at Lely Elementary, then in 2013 was promoted to Assistant Principal of Curriculum and Instruction at Golden Gate High School, then in the spring of 2015 I was promoted to Principal of Golden Gate High School. I received my Bachelor’s degree from Grand Valley State University, my Master’s degree and Doctoral degree in Educational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University. Personally, I am married to my wonderful wife Lynda Walcott who is the Principal at Calusa Park Elementary and we have 2 daughters (Haley and Devin). Haley currently lives in Atlanta and works in marketing for a large real estate company and Devin is currently a 3rd grade teacher at Golden Gate Elementary.

Having started my 5th year as principal of GGHS we found ourselves in a very special place; we moved our school grade from a C to a B 2 years ago and maintained our B school grade last year. We are now poised and in position to capture the A! We are working and getting closer toward my goal of becoming an academically sound high school. I am extremely proud of our students and staff at GGHS. We work hard to support our students and community. By improving our school grade, there is a strong sense of pride within the school, within our students/staff and within the community……GO TITANS!!

William Staros, Principal, Gulf Coast Charter Academy SouthMr. Staros is very excited to work with such a dedicated staff, hard-working students, supportive parents and caring community.

Will was born and raised in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from FGCU and his Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from The University of New England. He has participated in several charter school and leadership conferences, as well as two leadership training programs.

When he is not at school Will likes spending time with his wife, Beth, and two little girls, Ella-Rose & Ava. His other passions include swimming, trying new restaurants, and traveling to Savannah, Ga. for a taste of good Southern cooking.

Will feels honored to continue as the Principal at Gulf Coast Charter Academy for his fourth year.

Lisa Church, Vice President, Champions for Learning, facilitating Future Ready CollierLisa Church is a Vice President at Champions For Learning, The Education Foundation of Collier County, Florida. In her role, she is responsible for ongoing assessment and alignment of strategic priorities, emerging opportunities, educator and student program outcomes, and community engagement. She is currently leading Future Ready Collier on behalf of Champions For Learning, which is the backbone organization facilitating this collective impact initiative. Future Ready Collier is a network of more than 60 organizations, businesses, schools and community members working to ensure every child in Collier County is ready for Kindergarten, and every young person enters adulthood with a vision and plan to accomplish that vision.

Lisa’s background combines experience in public education, corporate and non-profit environments. Prior to moving to Naples in 2005 when she began at Champions For Learning, she had served as a senior marketing professional at the Chicago Tribune for eight years and had the opportunity to work in the context of cross- company and cross-departmental teams, as well as with community partners in both marketing and community relations capacities. She worked with many organizations, including

Chicago Public Schools, suburban school districts, suburban municipalities, the Mayor’s Office of Special Events for the City of Chicago, and many non-profit organizations.

Prior to her work at the Tribune, she taught high school students at Lawrence North High School in Indianapolis for six years, and Rogers High School in Michigan City, Indiana, for one year. She enjoyed the opportunity to engage community partners, local universities, and individual community members to enrich the experience of her students.

Lisa earned her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Notre Dame in American Studies (History/Communications) and Anthropology, and her Master of Arts from Indiana University, Bloomington, in Latin American Studies (History/Anthropology). She is a 2014 Leadership Collier graduate.

Lisa Morse, Director of Community Engagement and District InitiativesLisa Morse is the Director of Community Engagement and District Initiatives for the Collier County Public Schools. Ms. Morse’s service to the community includes 15 years of nonprofit work in Collier County, including helping to grow and build the Boys & Girls Club of Collier County and supporting the children of Immokalee with the Guadalupe Center of Immokalee. She also has extensive experience as a volunteer, including serving as a Board member for United Way and Leadership Collier Foundation, a member of the Leadership Team for Future Ready Collier, and a volunteer for Angels Undercover, Champions for Learning, and GPS Immokalee. Ms. Morse joined the Collier County Public Schools in 2012 to help connect the community to education. She has a degree in Elementary Education from the University of Scranton.

Robert Jackson, retired CCPS teacherPrior to joining Lorenzo Walker Technical College, Bob Jackson spent over 20 years in corporate banking with The First National Bank of Chicago, heading regional offices in Ohio and Singapore. His roles included managing bankers responsible for marketing financial products and services to Fortune 500 companies.

Following retirement, and due to his keen interest in education, Bob chose teaching as his second career, joining the faculty of LWTC in 2005. Owing to his experience in business, he was tasked with developing and teaching a curriculum focused on entrepreneurship and marketing to high school juniors and seniors. His students demonstrated their business acumen by competing in and winning numerous awards in business competitions throughout Southwest Florida.

Bob was recognized as Collier County’s Post-Secondary Teacher of the Year in 2015.

Yerania Barrios, former CCPS studentYerania Barrios has been with the Naples Wealth Planning team as the Operations & Client Service Associate since August 2017. She graduated with High Honors and certificates in E-Commerce Marketing and Entrepreneurship from Lorenzo Walker Technical High School. She is currently a full-time student at Florida Gulf Coast University, majoring in Finance due to Graduate December 2019. Yerania provides support to the entire Naples Wealth Planning team, customer service, and performs much of the administrative tasks.

Brian Bruneau, employer of Yerania BarriosBrian Bruneau is Chief Operating Officer at Capital Wealth Planning, LLC (CWP) with responsibility for operations, marketing and risk management across the CWP enterprise. He brings an extensive Fortune 100 executive management background with over 23 years in the financial services industry, along with a unique

entrepreneurial skillset building and developing businesses.

Brian’s greatest strengths are his creativity, drive and leadership. He thrives on challenges, particularly those that shape organizational excellence and increase business growth and productivity. Prior to joining CWP, Brian spent 8 years with MetLife in senior management roles as Assistant Vice President of Life & Disability Marketing accountable for overall product and channel marketing across the USA, and as Vice President of National Accounts covering wirehouse, bank, select broker-dealer and financial advisory firms across the country.

Preceding, Brian held senior management roles as Managing Director with Hartford Private Capital Management responsible for private equity portfolio management, operational strategic planning and business development; and was Senior Vice President of Marketing with Bank of America/Columbia Management accountable for all strategic marketing and product management for annuities, offshore and tax managed mutual fund product lines. In addition, he served as Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer with Zurich Financial Services in Chicago, Illinois responsible for all marketing, product development, compliance and investment management selection for life insurance and annuity products lines.

Brian also imparts a diverse sales, marketing, operations and investment management background from his early career with The Hartford, Merrill Lynch and as Vice President of Sales and Marketing in the printing and advertising industry. Brian attended Central Connecticut State University, has three children Josh, Brianna, and Jenalee and currently resides in Bonita Springs, Florida with his wife Mary.

Yolanda Flores, Administrative Director of Post-Secondary, Adult and Community Education, Lorenzo Walker Technical CollegeYolanda Flores is the Administrative Director of Post-Secondary, Adult and Community Education. She has a vast amount of experience working in education including Career and Technical Education, High School Equivalency Programs (GED) and English for Speakers of Other Languages and in a traditional high school. With over two decades of experience in career-focused programs, she understands that education must work closely with business and industry in order to successfully prepare students to enter the workforce. With this understanding, she looks to increase partnerships with business and industry that will create authentic learning experiences for students while meeting the needs of local employers.

Jeff Rexford, Principal, Lorenzo Walker Technical High SchoolJeff Rexford has spent 18 years in education. He is passionate about student success for all. His philosophy is: Every Student. Every Day. Whatever it Takes. Jeff has been fortunate to have educational experiences and opportunities at the elementary, middle, high school and post-secondary levels within Collier County Public Schools. He has spent the last four years as the principal of Lorenzo Walker Technical High School. Jeff is proud to be the recipient of the 2017-2018 Florida Tax Watch Principal Leadership Award. Lorenzo Walker Technical High School was also recognized as one of only twelve schools in the state to be named a National Blue Ribbon School during the 2018-2019 school year.

Dr. Tim Ferguson, CEO, Grace PlaceDr. Tim Ferguson is the Chief Executive Officer at Grace Place for Children and Families. Tim brings a strong background in educational leadership and administration prior to leading Grace Place, having spent 33 years as a teacher and administrator in both Collier and Lee County School Districts. Dr. Tim completed his undergraduate degree in Elementary and Special Education from Central Michigan University and a master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Western Michigan University. In 2007, Dr. Tim was selected as a member of the Executive Doctoral Program through the University of Florida, completing his Doctorate degree in administration and leadership in 2012. Additionally, Dr. Tim is a national training consultant with the Franklin Covey, Company supporting schools and organizations with implementation of 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and Successful Families training. “Providing the necessary support and educational opportunities to families strengthening the

community and enhancing the quality of life for all, Dr. Tim brings the knowledge, experience, vision and passion necessary to design and implement the elements of quality teaching, learning and leadership moving Grace Place to the next level of development as an organization serving the needs of students and families within the Golden Gate community.”

Susan McManus, President, Champions For LearningSusan is the President of Champions For Learning, the local education foundation in Collier County. She has led the foundation since its infancy, serving on the founding Board of Directors, and becoming the executive director in 1993.

She has earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Dalhousie University and a Bachelor of Education from Mount Saint Vincent University, both in Halifax, Nova Scotia; she also earned a Master of Education degree from University of South Florida. Susan taught elementary school at Saint Ann’s when she moved to Naples in 1976.

Susan is married to Steve McManus and has three sons. Christopher, Carson and Duncan. She also is the proud grandmother of Xavier and Chloe Hale, who both live in Naples.

She is a passionate advocate for teachers and students and values the community’s collective voice for education.

Dr. Michael Martin, President, Florida Gulf Coast UniversityMichael V. Martin serves as President of Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU). The Florida Gulf Coast University Board of Trustees unanimously selected Dr. Martin to become the institution's fourth President on July 1,2017, and his appointment was confirmed by the Board of Governors.

President Martin came to FGCU from the Colorado State University System, where he served most recently as Chancellor Emeritus and Senior Fellow following three years as Chancellor. Prior to this, he was Chancellor of Louisiana State University; President of New Mexico State University; Vice President for Agriculture and Natural Resources at University of Florida; Vice President for Agricultural Policy at University of Minnesota; and served 15 years on the faculty, including a term as Faculty Senate president, at Oregon State University.

A native of Crosby, Minnesota, Dr. Martin earned a bachelor's degree in business and economics and a master's degree in economics at Mankato State College (now Minnesota State University). He received his Ph.D. in applied economics from the University of Minnesota in 1977. His areas of specialization are prices, international trade, public policy, transportation, and business logistics.

His membership on local, state and national boards and organizations spans decades of service, and includes the Farm Foundation Board of Trustees, and the lnternational Agricultural Trade Research Consortium.

Dr. Martin and his wife, Jan, are parents to two children adopted from Korea. Amanda graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in graphic design. She and her husband, Paul Ehrsam, are parents to two terrific grandsons, Logan and Charlie. Son Sam has a bachelor's degree in biology from the University of Minnesota, a master's degree in human genetics from Sarah Lawrence University, and a master's degree in software engineering from Pace University.
