Nota benne:

All downloads related to Octopus installation (except the database manager tool) are available on the

Octopus network website:

http://www.octopusnetwork.org/UserDownloads.aspx

Octopus uses a multi-users database. You can use Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE),

Microsoft SQL Express 2005 or Microsoft SQL Server.

MSDE and SQL Express are both free, but we recommend you to use SQL Express and this Installation guide

has been designed for an installation with SQL Express.

Prerequisites:

Octopus has been developed with Microsoft .Net technology. It therefore requires the .NET framework. At

the time when this document was written, the .Net Framework 3.5 is needed to run Octopus on your

computer.

The 3.5 version of DotNet is available on the download page of Octopus website (See Nota Benne).

Octopus installation also requires the latest version of Windows Installer.

The 3.1 version of Windows installer is available on the download page of Octopus website (See Nota

Benne).

Installation Process:

1. Set up the database engine

2. Install database administration tool (optional)

3. Install Octopus

4. Install Crystal Report for Octopus

5. Set up SQL server and network

6. Set up client

Introduction

The database engine is the tool that enables Octopus to store the information managed through Octopus.

The tool also offers the possibility to back up and restore data.

In our case, the data base engine is Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition.

The database administration tool is the program that enables the user to enter directly in the database

without Octopus as go-between. This is particularly helpful in various situations:

- To check the data integrity in the database

- To correct big mistakes entered by the data clerk

- To work on several databases (merging, splitting of databases)

- To create custom reports (in case you have a trained IT specialist).

This tool is optional and is not required for the standard use of Octopus. We recommend you to install it only

if you have acknowledged skills in SQL language.

Here, the database administration tool is SQL Server Management Studio Express.

Octopus is the client of the SQL server.

Crystal Report for Octopus is a limited version of Crystal Report, a program dedicated to creating reports

(diagrams, graphs, tables…). Octopus uses this limited version of Crystal Report as a interface to display

reports from its reporting module.

5. Octopus connection set up

It is now time to set-up Octopus to match with SQL server settings.

Enter connection parameters in Octopus: « configuration » / « advanced settings » as following:

Server: enter the IP address of the server or the name of the computer where the database in installed,

followed by ‘\sqlexpress’. For instance: ‘Vincent-PC\sqlexpress’

Database: enter a name that will be the name of the database used (for instance, the name of your branch)

User name: enter ‘sa’

Annexe: Set up SQL server and network

We first need to enable TCP/IP mode in SQL Server

Open SQL Server Configuration Manager (start>all programs>Microsoft SQL server 2005>configuration

tools>SQL server configuration manager)

With a right-click on TCP/IP enable this mode.

Page 18: Microsoft Word - Octopus Installation Guide -EN

OMFS Installation Guide

It is then necessary to edit networks settings

Right-click on TCP/IP and then go to properties

IP addresses

Usually, there is nothing to change in the

“protocol” tab. Go directly to the “IP addresses”.

In that case, there are at least two IP addresses:

IP1 which is the network address and IP2 which is

the “local host”:

• If want Octopus to be available on the network, we need to enable IP1

• If we just want to connect on local host in order to text the network connection to Octopus, we

need to enable it

TCP port

We need to enter the default port of SQL SERVER: 1433 in IPAll. Be careful to enter this number in TCP port

and not in Dynamic TCP Port.
