REFLECTIONS IN THE PLANE (Part 2)

2. Reflect each of the following figures across its line of reflection. Label polygon

3. Using a ruler, colored pencil and the figures on the previous page, connect each of the pre-image points with their corresponding image points. Share your findings with your partner and record your observations.

4. For each figure, label one end of the reflection segment the origin and add the x and y axes so that you can determine the coordinates of each of the preimage points and its corresponding image point.

When a figure is reflected across the y-axis, (x, y) → ( , ).

When a figure is reflected across the line y = x, (x, y) → ( , ).

When a figure is reflected across the line y = -x, (x, y) → ( , ).

Can you make a prediction of what happens when a figure is reflected across the x-axis, (x, y) → ( , )? On a coordinate plane, draw a polygon and reflect it across the x-axis to test your prediction. Share your findings with your partner and record your observations.

5. Determine the lines of reflection for each of the following figures.

6. Describe methods for determining the position of the line of reflection.
