This course gives students basic techniques for efficient reading of academic texts. Main skills taught are vocabulary recognition, identifying main ideas, identifying supporting details and transitions, recognizing different types of text, differentiating between fact and opinion, and critical reading.

Students are exposed to academic texts in English from various disciplines. Focus is on vocabulary,comprehension and strategies for engagement with the text.

Students review and learn how to structure a sentence. Correct use of subjects, verbs, pronouns, modifiers, punctuation and typing conventions in English are taught in this course.

An introduction to the field of communication with emphasis on the history and theories of communication and the contexts in which communication occurs. An introduction to drama and theatre history through the reading of at least one complete play with attention paid to structure, themes and staging.

An introduction to the novel as a genre, which will entail the reading of at least one complete-work. As well as studying a text in depth, students will review the history of the novel, and identify reasons for the form’s popularity.

An introduction to the understanding and appreciation of poetry as a literary genre. Students learn skills for reading and writing about poetry; attention will be given to generic conventions, important terminology, elements of prosody, and critical perspectives.

Students explore diverse literary and cultural elements of literature in the United States from the time of early settlement to the end of WWII.

This course looks at the way in which language defines and maintains group identity. Topics include language and society, regional dialects, development of prestige dialects, problems of multilingual societies and international variations of world languages.

An introduction to methods for recognizing and assessing language learners’ errors. Authentic data from spoken and written language will be examined, and class participants will use both linguistic and learning theories.

An introductory course to the science and craft of translation. The course is a combination of theory and practice. New terms will be introduced to familiarize students with basic translation terminology such as, connotation, denotation, text, context, etc. Students will get to know the types of texts and the different translation methods the translator opts for while translating. As for the practical part, students will start translating at the level of the sentence then move to translating short texts in different disciplines.

Focus is on the analysis of arguments intended to influence beliefs, attitudes, values, and practices in in such fields as political discourse and advertisng through the study of argumentation and rhetoric.

The spread of themes, values, and genres beyond their cultures of origin is discussed using communication theory.

TRANSLATION
01062302 Translation II (3 credit hours)Prerequisite: 01062301
A build-up on the introductory course in which longer texts of various types are translated. The course deals with problems in translating Arabic texts into English and vice versa depending on contrastive studies of both English and Arabic language systems. Students will get to know techniques in analyzing texts of different types and how to assign appropriate translation methods based on the text type.

A customized course for translation students in which careful consideration is given to issues such as text linguistics, syntax, sentential elements, grammar and grammatical rules, connotational meaning, and effective use of grammatical, lexical, and other stylistic features in writing.
01062421 Media Translation (3 credit hours)Prerequisite: 01062302
An examination of material taken from newspapers, magazines, and other media. Journalistic practices in both English and Arabic publications are to be compared and contrasted ,and special emphasis is to be placed on the vocabulary of current events, public issues and news reporting. This course also trains translator trainees in the translation of texts in history and philosophy that involve the study of culture and ideas. In addition, texts related to ancient Greeks and Romans along with the Islamic culture are to be translated.

Consideration of the particular characteristics of legal texts (including contracts, official documents, and various statutes) as they differ in English and Arabic. Class participants will study specialized vocabulary and conventions governing such texts. The course will place attention on the translator’s responsibility to the client and provide practice in translating a wide variety of authentic materials.

The course involves translating specialized discourse patterns of business, finance and economics. The course will emphasize reading and interpreting technical books, articles and reports in these fields. Texts in the field of social sciences sociology, psychology, economics, political sciences and anthropology are going to be examined and translated.

An introduction to the language used in scientific disciplines. By studying key terminology and reading articles taken from the press, students learn to speak and write about technical fields ranging from genetics and medicine to computer science and nuclear physics. Furthermore, scientific and technological articles and reports are interpreted and translated from English into Arabic and vice versa.

An introduction to the language used in the study of social science and the humanities. Students learn specific vocabulary and read and translate texts drawn from history, political science, journalism, and literature to gain aptitude in dealing with these subjects in English as well as Arabic.
01062498 Translation Practice (3 credit hours)Prerequisites: 01062421, 01062422, 01062426 (Concurrently with 01062431 AND 01062432)An opportunity for students to develop and use the skills learned in the translation track and to put them into practice. Students will apply theoretical knowledge of translation practices to the translation of commercial, legal, media, and literary texts from English into Arabic with appropriate stylistic features and levels of form.
