Andrews Launches Health & Wellness InitiativeUniversity works toward a healthier campus and community

   Campus News (/agenda/feed/Agenda: Campus News/) | Posted on October 5, 2015

Dominique Wakefield is the new director of University Health & Wellness. Photo by Darren Heslop

  By: Becky St. Clair

Andrews University officially launched its new University Health & Wellness initiative on Wednesday,

September 23, built on the principle and Andrews core strength of Live Wholly. This new initiative is

ongoing and includes the development and construction of a Health & Wellness Center, currently still

in planning stages.

“I am thrilled about the incredible opportunity we have to utilize the foundational principles of health

and wellness to improve, transform and save lives,” says Dominique Wakefield, newly appointed

director of University Health & Wellness. “My role is to provide expert executive health and wellness

advice and to strategically coordinate all things health and wellness for students, faculty, staff and the

community.”

Wakefield will accomplish this task with the support and guidance of the newly established Health &

Wellness Council, and the new Wellness Action Team will carry out the practical components of health,

wellness and fitness within the campus and community.

“Wellness is an active process of optimizing every aspect of our multidimensional self to harmoniously

reflect the image of our Creator by nurturing and equally emphasizing physical, mental and spiritual

development,” says Wakefield. “This means that wellness is a complete lifestyle, challenging us to

make positive choices in all areas of our lives each day, both personally and professionally.”

University Health & Wellness will integrate five deeply connected pillars: physical, spiritual, mental,

relational and professional wellness.

“Together these pillars promote living life to our fullest potential as our Creator God intended for us,”

says Wakefield. “This process is about joy, happiness and balance, all of which contribute to leading

successful and satisfactory lives.”

With strong support from administration, Wakefield encourages every member of the Andrews

community (both on- and off-campus) to join and support this movement. Some initial ways to get

involved include:

Andrews University Plank Challenge:Plank each day at 3 p.m. for 30 seconds (or whatever you

can do), starting Monday, October 5. For details on planking, visit andrews.edu/wellness

Wednesday 5K Walk:Every Wednesday at 5 p.m. Meet at the J.N. Andrews sculpture in front of

PMC, starting Wednesday, October 14.

Wellness website with wellness calendar:andrews.edu/wellness. To be completed October 2015.

Wellness Lounge: A space to enjoy a variety of special wellness offerings. Coming November

2015.

“Together we can transform this community and become the healthiest university,” Wakefield says,

“inspiring the world to live life to the fullest through the foundational principles of health and

wellness.”

Wakefield comes to Andrews from La Sierra University (Riverside, California), where she served as

assistant professor of health and exercise science. She previously worked at Andrews as director of

Fitness & Exercise Studies and assistant professor in the Department of Nutrition & Wellness from

2008–2012. Wakefield also holds a BA in physical education with a health emphasis and an MA in

teaching international languages with an emphasis in curriculum and instruction from California State

University.

“Having worked in the corporate, clinical and academic settings thus far, I have had many different

types of rewarding experiences,” says Wakefield. “All of these have had their own challenges, but I

believe if it doesn’t challenge you it doesn’t change you, and change is what we need, especially as it

pertains to health, wellness and fitness.”

In addition to working as a personal trainer, wellness coach, group fitness instructor and fitness and

programs director, Wakefield has taught at Southern Adventist University (Collegedale, Tennessee),

University of Tennessee-Chattanooga and California State University-Chico in the areas of health,

fitness and exercise science.

“Dominique Wakefield is an exciting choice for this position,” says Andrea Luxton, provost. “She brings

energy and passion for health and wellness, along with excellent credentials. I have no doubt that she

will energize the campus community to make wellness part of the fabric of the University.”

Wakefield considers her work at Andrews not only academic and administrative, but spiritual as well.

“I believe that God has made us humans ‘very good’ and he wants us to live extraordinary lives,” she

says, “which is possible through optimal levels of the different dimensions of wellness. When you see

the power of wellness transform lives and even save lives, it truly is an inspiration.”

NIMBA Hosts Bike Ride on Andrews TrailsAdvanced mountain biking group enjoys new challenges

   Campus News (/agenda/feed/Agenda: Campus News/) | Posted on October 5, 2015

The Northern Indiana Mountain Bike Association (NIMBA), a local chapter of the International

Mountain Bikers Association, has begun utilizing Andrews University’s trails for group rides, starting

with a recent early fall ride which drew over 25 riders.

NIMBA is involved in developing and maintaining five trails in the Michiana region, and boasts over 200

members from Berrien and St. Joseph counties. Several members regularly use Andrews University’s

trails and have been encouraging the group to check them out.

On September 21 NIMBA held a guided ride on the trails, attended by local riders as well as NIMBA

members. The ride lasted a couple of hours.

“Our riders are always interested in riding in new places,” says John Marquardt, president of NIMBA.

“We have encouraged people to use the Andrews trails in the past, but have never organized an official

ride there. While signage was an issue at one point, it’s improved quite a bit and it was exciting to give

them a try for the first time.”

Andrews University maintains nearly 11 miles of trails on the northwest side of campus, and has

undertaken steps to make the trails on campus accessible to the community including providing

increased signage. There are two main access points: the Pathfinder Building lot on the north side of

campus, and the parking lot along Campbell Drive, the road leading to Timber Ridge Manor just west of

campus off of M139.

“The Andrews trails are a fairly unknown gem right here in our own campus backyard,” says Emily

Carlson, assistant director of Student Activities & Involvement.  “A group of dedicated volunteers keep

them in great condition, and they are a beautiful oasis of peace and natural beauty mere steps from

campus.  Casual hikers and more hardcore mountain bikers alike can enjoy them, and I encourage

students to grab a group of friends and explore. They make for a great Sabbath afternoon hike, or as

part of a morning exercise routine.”

The Andrews trails provide unique features not present elsewhere in the Michiana region.

“These trails offer challenges we don’t have on the trails that NIMBA maintains,” says Marquardt.

“People will drive up to Grand Rapids from Indiana to get those kind of rides, and here they are, 15

miles north of the Indiana border. You guys have quite an asset out there.”

Many of the riders who attended NIMBA’s guided ride were impressed with the technical challenges

Andrews Trails has to offer.

“The climbs and descents are impressive,” says Marquardt. “It’s everything intermediate and advanced

riders like to see. Next spring we’ll organize another trip out there. I think there will be more people

riding out there on their own now that they’ve done it as a group. We are always looking to expand

knowledge of trails in the area and are happy to add Andrews’ trails to our list of recommended rides.”

riders.

Andrews Celebrates Hispanic Heritage MonthNew York ensemble performs "Los Valientes" on Tuesday

  By: Becky St. Clair

Andrews University invites the community to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a performance of

“Los Valientes” (The Courageous Ones) in the Howard Performing Arts Center. The performance will

take place on Tuesday, October 6, at 11:30 a.m.

This production is presented by Core Ensemble from New York, featuring are Kevin Melendez acting

and Hugh Hinton at the piano.

“Los Valientes” is a live music theatre work for singing actor and piano. Based on the lives of three

heroic Latinos, the show celebrates Mexican painter Diego Rivera, martyred Salvadoran Archbishop

Oscar Romero and Mexican-American outlaw Joaquin Murrieta (some say the Zorro character was

based on this historical figure). Music in the performance ranges from traditional Latino folk and

popular songs sung in Spanish to instrumental works by Latin American composers.

Andrews University administration announces the appointment of Benjamin Panigot as director of

Campus Safety. The position was left open by Dale Hodges, who managed the Office of Campus Safety

as director for seven and a half years until early September when he accepted a position in Louisiana

to be nearer to family.

Panigot has served as assistant director and captain of Campus Safety for the past two and a half

years and prior to that served in several different capacities in the same office since 2007.

“We are pleased to have someone who not only knows so much about safety and security but who is

also so familiar with the Andrews campus,” says Larry Schalk, vice president for Financial

Administration at Andrews University. “We believe Ben will be an excellent director of Campus Safety

and welcome him to his new role.”

As a safety officer Panigot has maintained his skills and knowledge base through multiple channels,

including: FEMA Emergency Management Institute; Department of Education Readiness & Emergency

Management for Schools; Michigan State Police; Secret Service; National Weather Service and more.

He has trained in areas as varied as Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), fire fighting, storm

spotting, interviewing and interrogation, Clery Act compliance and more.

Panigot has also served on several University committees over the years, as well as been a part of the

Michigan Fire Inspectors Society, the National Fire Protection Association and Professional Adventists

for Safety & Security.

“The Campus Safety team works hard to take care of the students, faculty, staff and community

members who enjoy being a part of our campus community,” says Panigot. “I’m excited for the chance

to lead this team and consider myself blessed to have had such great mentors to show me how to

lead.”

Social Work Ranks 11 out of 150 Programs in U.S.Program receives top marks from Social Work Degree Guide

   Campus News (/agenda/feed/Agenda: Campus News/) | Posted on October 1, 2015

The Andrews University Social Work Program ranks 11 out of 150 programs in Christian colleges across

the United States, according to Social Work Degree Guide (SWDG). Their recent report on the Best

Value Christian Colleges with Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) accreditation considers five

criteria: tuition, pay scale return on investment, student-to-faculty ratio, CSWE accreditation and

accreditation date. The various categories are weighted differently.

Andrews boasts a 100 percent employment rate for both undergraduate and graduate students

following graduation. Additionally, the social work program at Andrews maintains a 100 percent pass

rate in students on both levels for the state licensure exam, with an impressive 86 percent passing on

their first try.

Furthermore, the Department of Social Work offers its students relevant coursework which covers a

broad spectrum of pertinent issues including classes on Diversity and Differences, Social Welfare

Services and Policy, Human Rights, Social Economics Justice and Human Behavior, among others.

The social work program at Andrews received accreditation in 1990. This, combined with a student-to-

faculty ratio of 9:1, earned the University 142.5 points out of a possible 200 in the scoring system

utilized by the SWDG.

“We are in some verygood company with other top Christian social work programs,” says Curt

Vanderwaal, chair of the Department of Social Work. “Huge thanks for everything everyone has done to

make our program one of the very best in the nation.”

Students Score 100th & 99th Percentiles on MCATHonors students well-prepared for testing

   Campus News (/agenda/feed/Agenda: Campus News/) | Posted on October 1, 2015

  By: Danni Francis✏

This summer, Ashley Reichert, Sumiko Weir and Zach Reichert, three senior Biology major students at

Andrews University, scored in the 100 and 99 percentiles on the Medical College Admission Test

(MCAT). The three students are also a part of the J. N. Andrews Honors Program, and both Ashley and

Weir are National Merit Scholars, having scored extraordinarily well on the Preliminary SAT/National

Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

With regards to the Department of Biology Zach says, “Upper division courses went beyond just

reading the textbook; I had a lot of professors that would have me read primary research articles and

look at and interpret data. Learning how to do that and reading articles gives you really vital critical

thinking skills.”

Ashley agrees. “Dr. Zdor structures his tests very similarly to the MCAT,” she says. “He will provide you

with some sort of result, along with real research, and ask you questions about interpreting that

information. It was really helpful.”

“While reviewing for the MCAT, there was never a moment where I felt like I had never seen something

before,” says Weir. “It was always that I needed to remember what I was taught. Also, having to read

difficult primary source material in honors classes really prepared us for the MCAT.”

Zach adds, “There’s a whole section on the MCAT called Critical Reasoning and Analysis and they take

passages that are exactly like what you’re reading in Honors and the analysis section asks similar

questions, maybe even more basic. I felt like I was prepared already.”

“These three students are exceptional,” says Tom Goodwin, chair of the Department of Biology. “They

love to learn, they love to research and they are very inquisitive.”

The Department of Biology boasts a 71% acceptance rate for students applying to medical school, in

comparison to the national average of 41% (2014).

Ashley has applied to nine medical schools and is anticipating interview season, Zach plans to take a

year off and do medical missionary work and Weir plans to start medical school this coming fall.

“Honestly, we’re proud of all its students,” Goodwin says. “We are really fortunate to work with a great

bunch of students who are serious about their studies.”
