Lagos was its usual

brimming self. Traffic

is the usual crazy

o n e . M o t o r i s t s

forming a cacophony

of noises without

their horns and

guttural shouting

voices can be heard

raining abuses on no

one in particular. The

airports are busy as

usual. The aspiring

regional that is the

Lagos airport is

straining as usual

under the weight of

dealing with many

t r a v e l e r s w i t h

s t r u g g l i n g

infrastructure.

In the midst of this,

a n a s s o c i a t e d

Airlines aircraft took

off. There is nothing

out of place about

this. Many flights

take off and land in

the three terminals in

Lagos every hour, but

within minutes of its

taking off, the plane

had crashed into a

building just outside

of the airport fences.

P a n d e m o n i u m

started; who is there,

who had died, who

had survived? Within

minutes , i t was

confirmed that this

plane was carrying

t h e r e m a i n s o f

l e c t u r e r t u r n e d

politician, former

minister and former

Governor of Ondo

S t a t e , O l u s e g u n

Agagu, and 20 other

people. 14 perished…

and the rest survived

(2 later died). It is not

a funny thought, but

the question that

came to my mind was,

if Agagu was alive in

that p lane as i t

crashed, would he

have died or survived?

Now, we will never

know the answer to

that question, so we

can't in all honesty say

whether the man died

a second time or

survived. But it is not a

fate we will wish for

anyone. Does anyone

remembers that iconic

m u s i c i a n , F e l a

Anikulapo Kuti and

one of his songs in the

a l b u m t i t l e d

“Confusion breaks

bone! A part of it goes

like this:

Confusion break bone o, yeepa! (x2)Dead body getti accident, yeepa! (x2)Double wahala for dead body and the owner of dead body. (x2)Deadi bodi e e e!

In this case, it was

c lea r ly a doub le

tragedy for that dead

body, and the owners

of that dead body…

Imagine, losing 14

people, family and

close family on the day

of one's burial and

pe rhaps dy ing a

second time!! Imagine

the agony of the family

members! Imagine

being thrown into

fresh mourning!

For most people who

d o n ' t s p e a k o r

understand Yoruba,

Agagu's middle name

is Kokumo. This means

that this one will not

die again! Very apt

name is it, or is it not?

We can never tell now

whether Agagu died

again on that day of

the plane crash or

whether he survived.

All we know now for

sure is that he will

never die again. He

was finally laid to rest

that same weekend.

A d i e u O l u s e g u n

upon as a 'funny'

something like an

events organization

se rv i ce fo r dead

people. “With MIC, you

will be happy to be

dead” is the slogan I

would have given

them if they asked me.

Chief Okunsanya was

a man who took his

job seriously and as

much as possible was

very involved with the

business, and the

events they organize.

He was very personal,

and friendly, and you

would never guess

from meeting him that

this person is well to do.

I guess his views on life

had been shaped by

the very business he

does, seeing many

people die and are

buried, rich and poor,

w e l l k n o w n a n d

incognito. When you

see so much death, you

tend to see life for what

it is, very transient.

H e w a s a l w a y s

personally involved

with the clients and in

one such event, he met

his untimely death. In

the Niger delta, we also

do big burials, but I am

not sure we have any

undertaken firms like

MIC, or even close to it. I

believe that someone

should step into that

void for Port Harcourt

and the environs. It

may be cultural, but in

this day and age,

having people ride

r Olatunji

Okusanya,

6 0 , ( n o w Mdeceased) was the

boss of the pioneering

Funeral Company MIC

in Lagos. He died last

week in the Associated

Airline Crash on Oct 3.

to the undertaking

industry what Steve

transformed it. He

changed the way

brought fresh ideas

and creativity into the

industry. He changed

the way we look at the

funeral services. He

made a name for

himself, and became

in Icon in that industry.

information says

that before that ill Ufated journey that

morning of Oct 3, 2013,

the Associated Airline's

Embraer 120RT flight

that crashed minutes

after it took off had not

flown anywhere since

August 23 2013. That is

more than 6 weeks! That

in itself should have set

tongues wagging! Why

was it not flying? Why

was it parked? Is it that

they were waiting for

business or they were

not even in business?

The late Deji Falae, son of

politician and former

finance Minister, Chief

First amongst Equals…

Olu Falae, who was

also at the time of his

d e a t h , t h e

commissioner for

Tourism in Ondo

State was said to

have complained

about the sorry state

of the plane upon

seeing it. He was

persuaded to ignore

the signs and just

hop in for a quick

ride (about 25mins)

to Akure. Little did he

k n o w t h a t h i s

intuition was so right

that morning and

that the assumed

quick ride will end

even quicker!

Nobody knows who

c o n t r a c t e d

Associated Airline to

fly the corpse of the

late governor Agagu

to Akure. Some says

MIC, the undertakers

m a d e t h e

arrangement; others

say it was the Ondo

State Government.

Perhaps the truth will

come up sometime,

but what does it

matter if the truth

comes out. 20 people

were in that airline.

14 had their lives

terminated. I hear 2

more has since died.

T h e s u r v i v o r s

amongst them may

never live life to the

fu l les t anymore !

What a price to pay.

But at least the coffin

or an airplane that

was carrying another

coffin has now being

buried finally, Adieu

5N-BIT! That is the

name the Nigerian

carrier gave the

plane.

themselves to death on

an open backed car in

the name of going to

bury a beloved is a bit

dated. We can do better

at celebrating our dead

than we currently do. We

don't have to become a

nuisance. We can give

the dead a befitting

burial by doing it nice.

Once again, we mourn

this great man of the

Undertaking business.

The void will be hard to

fill.

I HAVE DATED NOT LESS THAN 8 GUYS My relationship has

never lasted long, once

it's getting to two or

three weeks, any guy

I'm dating will either

break up with me or

stop calling me on

phone, and I don't

seem to understand

what usually causes

that.

I have checked myself,

but cou ldn ' t f ind

anything wrong with

me . I am a very

beautiful lady every

guy would ever want.

So many times I've

given my heart to guys,

but they have always

refused to handle it

with care, they are

a l w a y s f u n d o f

breaking my heart, and

this make me keep

changing guys often.

I have dated not less

than 8 guys and they all

acted the same way,

please I need some advice

on how to make my

relationship work.

Answer:

Dear lady, I understand

how you feel, for it's so

pathetic to go through

emotional pains, most

especially when it comes

to a relationship matter.

Notwithstanding, I think

there are more to it, and I

will like you to look at it

w i t h a d i f f e r e n t

perspective. From the

information you gave, you

said any guy you date,

either breaks up with you

or stop calling you on

phone, hmm…well I don't

know what you meant by

the word 'dating', but all

the dating you had, were

they all well-defined? I

hope you know there is a

big difference between a

mere dating and being in

a serious relationship.

And if you can have a non-

deceptive definition of your

relationship with these

guys, then we can think of

what to advice you on.

What exactly do you want,

i s i t d a t i n g o r a

relationship? If it's dating,

then I'm sorry to tell you

that this will keep on

repeating itself; people

choose to date for a

particular period of time

they want, once they are

through, they back off. I

think you need to be sure of

what you want, either mere

d a t i n g o r a t r u e

relationship, this will help

to know where to start.

sometimes causes irrevocable

damage to the relationship

that hastens its end. There are

many things that can occur in

the wake of an infidelity. If you

are married, an infidelity

could lead to divorce. If you

a r e i n a c o m m i t t e d

relationship, it could lead to a

break up.

So what happens after

infidelity occurs in your

r e l a t i o n s h i p ?

There are distinct stages a

relationship goes through in

the wake of an infidelity.

1. Roller Coaster Stage: This is

the stage where strong

emotions arise - emotions

such as anger and self-blame

followed by a period of

i n t r o s p e c t i o n a n d

a p p r e c i a t i o n o f t h e

relationship. Just like it says,

your emotions go for a roller

coaster ride, up and down,

round and round and it's a bit

hard to figure out exactly

w h e r e y o u a r e .

2. Moratorium Stage: This

stage is a less emotional stage,

at least for the person who

was cheated upon. In this

stage, the person affected tries

to make sense of the betrayal.

They may ask for more detail

about the affair or retreat into

themselves or quietly seek

help from others regarding the

i s s u e .

3. Trust Building Stage: This

stage takes place when the

couple has decided to stay

together. During this stage, the

couple really tries to make

their marriage work. They

decide that a continued

commitment to the i r

relationship is important

and with time, eventually

forgiveness and trust can

b e a c h i e v e d .

After an infidelity occurs,

you may still find yourself

o f t en doub t ing you r

partner. Don't lose heart,

there is hope. Here are some

signs that may indicate if a

person is still worthy of your

l o v e .

● Expresses s incere

remorse and regret for

c h e a t i n g o n y o u

● Heartfelt apologies feel

true when you hear them

● Accepts total blame for

h i s o r h e r b e t r ay a l

● Cuts off all contact with

t h e t h i r d p a r t y

● Shows a renewed

appreciation, admiration,

respect and devotion to

o n l y y o u

● Displays a willingness

and openness to talk about

w h a t h a p p e n e d

● Is willing and eager to go

into marriage counselling

w i t h y o u

If both of you are willing to

participate in a deep, open,

and honest conversation

regarding your relationship

and how you would like it to

After Infidelity: Make up or

Break up

An infidelity is a betrayal, a

loss of trust. It is lying or

disloyalty to one's partner or

lover. Infidelity may be sexual

or emotional in nature and

typically involves a third

person. Infidelity does not

necessarily involve physical

separation, but can be

characterized by emotional

d e t a c h m e n t a s w e l l .

Emotional detachment can

happen when you lose your

partner's trust or if you lie to

your partner or tell them half-

truths. Betraying your partner

may inflict a deep pain that is

d i f f icu l t to repair and

few weeks ago,

I watched a TV

p r o g r a m m e Awhere a panel of

d i s c u s s a n t s h a d

gathered to talk about

the problem with

Nigeria at 53.

One of the discussants

simply called the

problem with Nigeria

N a r c o t i z i n g

d ys fu n c t i o n . N o t

b e i n g o f t h e

paraplegic crinkum

crankum and of the

plutomobokakistocra

cy school of grammar,

I quickly checked out

t h e p h r a s e t o

ascertain if its indeed

the problem with my

dear country. This is

w h a t I f o u n d :

N a r c o t i z i n g

Dysfunction refers to

a social consequence

of mass media. The

theory claims that as

news about an issue

inundates people,

t h e y b e c o m e

a p a t h e t i c t o i t ,

substituting action

on that issue for

knowing about it. In

the case of our nation,

it is our experiences

that have caused us

to become numb to

t h e h a p p e n i n g s

around us. It brings to

my mind the subject

of spiritual pollutants

that we are learning

in my church. It is so

sad that today, being

smart and sharp is

used to describe

someone who is

obviously defrauding

a fellow man. Some

people will say “Na

Naija be this na!!! Na

you dey dia dey

mumu yourself!” It is

now as if it is a crime

to trust your fellow

human being.

I re m e m b e r t h e

Nigeria of yesterday

when parents used to

make their children

return books and

pens found in their bags

that didn't belong to

them. But today, while

some parents don't even

have no time to check

their kids' bags, others

parents think their own

kids are smart. Shame!

Recently, I heard the

story of a prominent

Nigerian whose dad

travelled from their

No Be Naija We Dey?

village to Lagos to ask

the company how much

they pay his son for him

to have given him such a

huge amount of money.

But today parents will

ask: “Are you not in the

same company as

Ralph? He just bought

his dad a Pathfinder

and has put up a two –

storey building in the

village. Whatever he is

doing, do it or are you

not a man? Welcome to

my Nigeria!

There was a time when

people would keep

oranges for sale in front

of their houses with no

one manning them and p a s s e r s b y w o u l d

simply take the portion

they want to buy and

drop the equivalent

cash. Try it today, and

your oranges, tray and

stool will simply grow

wings and fly.

Are we like this today

because of our culture?

I don't think so. But

somehow, over the

years we've somehow

began to associate

committing a crime as

being smart and doing

good as foolishness. We

used to have a culture

where elders spoke the

truth at all times. But

today, elders pervert

justice in favour of the

rich and powerful. Only

the rich are respected.

No matter how wise

your counsel, is you are

nothing without money.

So why wouldn't people

d e v e l o p a p a t h y

towards things that are

going wrong today?

Use your position in

office to defraud the

country and you'll be

given a chieftaincy title

in your village or made

a sorry Knight in the

church. No one cares

about the source of

anyone's income as

l o n g a s y o u a r e

'performing or showing

working'.

O f fenders are not

punished but praised

a n d g i v e n m o r e

o p p o r t u n i t i e s t o

continue in their ways.

Tell me, why won't

anyone be numbed as

not to care anymore or

e v e n j o i n t h e

bandwagon? After all,

they say that if you can't

beat them join them.

The good book tells us

that r ighteousness

exalts a nation but sin is

a reproach to every

people. Until Nigeria

returns to the ancient

paths of truth, justice

and equity, it can only

get worse. This country

is slowly but surely

going over the edge. The

time to act is now.

Peace and goodwill to

us all.

progress, there is a good

chance you will be able to

work through your issues.

If, on the other hand, your

partner is not open to

discussing these things with

you and not demonstrating

a n y o f t h e p o s s i b l e

reconcilement signs listed

above, it may be time to cut

your losses and get out.

Additional signs that it might

be time to end the relationship

are: your partner seems to be

more agitated than usual and

seems to emotionally and

physically withdraw from you.

They may go out alone more

often and may be making

clandestine phone calls or

working late hours. You might

even receive anonymous

phone calls at the house. If

several of these things are

occurring, then most probably

your partner is cheating on

you. If you can find concrete

evidence of this infidelity, then

it's probably a good idea to

break up. A relationship that is

based on lies, lacks trust and

lack of commitment is doomed

t o f a i l .

After an infidelity occurs, be

aware of any signs that may

indicate your par tner ' s

willingness to stay and work it

out or clear intention to follow

along the path of continued

betrayal. Just be careful and

pay attention. Make the best

decision for you.

assumes that i t 's

bigger than Nigeria,

and w i l l happen

Government and its

decis ions wi l l be

b i n d i n g o n t h e

g o v e r n m e n t a n d

everyone. Sovereignty

means that you can't

touch this decision;

you have to abide by it.

You can't influence or

change it. Whatever

we decide is final.

While this is fine in

theory, the practicality

is suspect to me. Who

are the we in the

s o v e r e i g n

arrangement? Who

calls the shorts? Who

d e c i d e w h i c h

decisions are to be

carried? Who is the

u m p i r e ? W h o

mediates? We all have

our own individual,

sectional or ethnic

positions, so who can

we trust? In addition to

that, we also have our

n a t i o n a l i s t i c o r

federated tendencies,

and I am yet to see a

Nigerian who does not

have a position of

preference in all of

these permutations.

So who will help us run

a conference that is so

sovereign as we want.

My submission is that

this is an impossible

r e q u e s t . S u c h a

conference cannot be

sovereign. So let's

move on to the next

reality. A national

d i a l o g u e i s n ow

offered, and it is

welcome by most

people as the way to

go. What to talk about?

We have heard people

say everything. That's

not a def in i t ion ,

because that can be

going on for the next

decade. When do we

stop. How do we know

we have come to

agreement. In this kind

o f c o n f e r e n c e ,

democracy is usually

practiced, but wont the

same people who are

c o m p l a i n i n g o f

marginalization now

still be complaining of

marginalization when

their vies are not

carried? Would we not

be hearing about how

votes were rigged in the

conference chambers?

Even if we appoint

u m p i re s t h at a re

untainted, are we going

to be civil enough to

accept their umpirage?

A re we g o i n g t o

compromise our stand

when it is obvious that

the majority does not

want it.

Next question? How are

we going to appoint or

elect those who will

represent us. Will the

government appoint

them, or will each

e t h n i c g r o u p i n g

appoint their own? No,

that wont work. We are

also divided within

these ethnic lines, so

perhaps we should do

along tribal lines. But I

also know that this will

also be tough. How will

every Nigerian be sure

that the people that

have been invited from

every part of Nigeria

h a v e t h e s a m e

intention in their mind

to work for the good of

t h e p e o p l e t h e y

represent?

How are we sure that

they will say what we

want them to say? Will

they be selected (or

a p p o i n t e d ) b y

Government or elected

by us? Will the teacher

be able to participate?

W h a t a b o u t t h e

barber? Which level of

intellect would we

need, and can this

tower of Babel stand?

Another quest ion?

W h a t w o u l d o u r

currently elected law

makers be doing? Will

they be waiting to

rubber stamp what the

conference agrees

w h e n t h e y a r e

empowered by the law

of the land to make and

changes laws on our

behalf?

How does the National

Conference conform to

our Constitution? If we

a r e p r a c t i c i n g

democracy, we should

practice it well. Laws

can only be made by

the Legislatures, not by

a body constituted by

the Executive.

If there are contentions,

w h i c h p a r ty w i l l

interpret the law for us?

I don't know the extent

o f the Jud ic ia ry ' s

involvement in this

con fe rence . When

points of the law

require interpretation,

would we call on the

Supreme Court to be

the arbiter! Would they

b e a c t i n g i n

accordance with the

laws of the land?

Assuming that by some

stokes of miracle, we

manage to come up

with a list of things that

needs to be changed,

how are we going to

implement it? If any of

these changes will

mean that there will be

a marked departure

from the pol i t ical

structure we have now,

would the people that

are currently benefiting

from it not fight it to the

last drop of their blood?

Or do we think we can

have a Frederick De

Klerk that will oversee

his own removal from

power? I don't think

Nigerian's are that

altruistic.

The above are some of

the challenges on our

way as we approach

this national confab. Of

course there will be

serious jostling by a

lot of people to be part

of it. It's always a

j a m b o re e . T h e s e

people will be lodged

f o r m i n i m u m

3months in one of the

most expensive hotels

in the land, fed like

kings, treated like

royalties, given mouth

watering allowances

that they have never

seen before in their

lives perhaps. Thus

there will be serious

lobbying going on.

There will also be

people who have

interests in either

maintaining status

quo or changing it

trying to get as many

of their people as

possible into the

confab and into the

key decision making

c h a i r s i n t h e

committees. That way,

they can protect their

interests.

confab! I didn't Fwatch the televised

speech President

Jonathan gave on the

eve of this year's

independence, but

from reports, he

national conference.

This is a pull out from

the exact transcript

where he mentioned

this:

“In demonstration of

my avowed belief in

the positive power of

dialogue in charting

the way forward, I

have decided to set

up an Adv i so ry

Committee will also

design a framework

and come up with

recommendations as

to the form, structure

the process.”

If I recall, people are

a s k i n g f o r a

ore than

e v e r

before it is Mbecoming clear that

quality education is

expensive. To get

va lue fo r the i r

money, pa rents

need to be more

involved in their

children's education

beyond just paying

the school fees. A

c h i l d e xc e l l e n t

a c a d e m i c

performance can no

longer be left as the

sole responsibility of

the school. How can

parents help their

c h i l d r e n e x c e l

academically? We

have the following

ideas to share with

you.

1. Get involved: Get

to know what is

happening in your

child’s school. What

curriculum is the

school using? What

is their method of

teaching? What is

t h e r e c o r d o f

a c a d e m i c

pe r fo rmance o f

students? Can your

child match his

counterparts from

other schools?

2. Be interested: Show interest in

how your child is

p r o g r e s s i n g i n

school. Find out the

difficulty he or she is

f a c i n g . B e

concerned to bring

about the desired

p r o g r e s s /

improvement in

your child academic

performance.

3. Relate well with your child's school: Know your child's

class teacher. Have a

cordial relationship

w i t h t h e s c h o o l

authority. Attend the

school functions such

as PTA meet ings ,

foundation laying

ceremonies, end of

session activities, etc.

Let your impact be felt

in the school with your

wise suggest ions ,

cont r ibu t ion and

constructive criticism.

4. Encourage the love for reading in your child: Endearvour to

b u y t h e

recommended school

books for your child.

Buy books outside the

recommended books

that can help your

children. Buy story

b o o k s , m a p s ,

dictionaries, activity

books, etc. See to it

that your child has a

well decorated and

organised reading

corner and time at

home, and make it fun.

5. Support your child: G i v e m o r a l a n d

emotional support to

y o u r c h i l d . B e

supportive in their

homework and during

preparation for an

exam. In preparing for

exams, reduce house

chores, place the child

on study diet and

revise with him or her.

D o n ' t d o t h e i r

homework for them

but guide them on

how to do it. Inspect

what has been done

and see that it is

submitted at the right

time. Don't keep your

c h i l d away f ro m

school for every and

any reason.

6. Regulate your chi ld 's Te levis ion consumption: Limit

t h e t e l e v i s i o n

consumption of your

child. This is one of the

time wasters your

child has to contend

with. Help him or her

to win this battle. Be

interested in what

your child watches on

television and how

much time he or she

spends with it.

7. Motivate your child to excel academically: Expose your child to

stories of great men

and women who

achieved great things

i n l i f e t h r o u g h

education. Motivate

your ch i ldren by

reading to them and

with them. Encourage

your child to set

academic goals and

attach a reward to it.

8 . R e g u l a r l y a n d consistently pray for your child's academic success: Teach your

child to pray for

himself or herself. Pray

for wisdom, for good

health, for retentive

memory. Pray for a

d i l i g e n t a n d a n

excellent spirit. Pray

for God's guidance in

the choice of your

child's career.

9. Pay your child's school fees on time: This helps your child's

psychology of learning.

It helps your child to

participate confidently

in school activities.

10. Be there for your child during this stage of his or her life: One of

the best gift you can

give your child that will

boos t h i s o r he r

academic performance

is the gift of your time.

Your presence is more

needed now at this

formation stage of his

or her life. After they are

grown, your impact will

not be all that effective.

We wish you and your

child the best in this

excellent academic

pursuit.

homework and during

up.Do you want to reduce your

risk of developing a heart

disease? If yes, then the

solution is by lowering your

cholesterol. Can diet alone

b e u s e d t o l o w e r

cholesterol? The answer is

YES, you can reduce your

c h o l e s t e r o l l e v e l s

significantly by making

changes in your diet. So

what foods aid in lowering

cholesterol? There are quite

a variety of foods that do so.

Most nuts including pecans,

groundnuts, walnuts and

almonds help lower

cholesterol. It is unclear

h o w n u t s l o w e r

cholesterol but it might be

because they contain

p l a n t s t e r o l s a n d

monounsaturated fats that

protect blood vessels from

damage. They are also

high in fibre and vitamin

E.Healthy oils like olive oil

and rapeseed oil neither

which contain mainly

monounsaturated fats

neither increase nor

decrease cholesterol

levels, however, they help

make the artery walls

stronger and are also

cleared easily by the body.

Most fatty foods are high in

cholesterol, so replacing

them by f rui ts and

vegetables which are high

in fibre is another way of

reducing cholesterol. High

cholesterol is caused by

eating too much saturated

fat. Red meat, cheese,

butter, full fat milk and

cream all contain high

amounts of saturated fat.

That is why doctors advice

people to cut down their

red meat portions and eat

more of fish and lean meat

or organ meat (liver,

kidney, heart etc). Eggs are

high in cholesterol and

s h o u l d b e e a t e n

moderately. An egg a day

isn't bad but eating a plate

o f f ou r f r i e d e g g s

alongside a meal does one

no good. Many people

think that chocolate and

coffee push up your

cholesterol levels. This is

not true. Both can be

enjoyed but obviously not

in excessive amounts. Summarily, foods like

nuts, fibre, soya, healthy

oils, oats etc are heart

f r iendly and aid in

m a i n t a i n i n g g o o d

cholesterol levels. So if

you are one of those

people who indulge in lots

of junk food, large plates of

fried eggs, large pieces of

red meat etc, do your heart

some good by eating right

and if you happen to drink

lots of beer, you can

substi tute that with

moderate amounts of

wine.

Sudoku helps your logical thinking!

Sudoku is a very popular number puzzle game.

The rulers are simple and the games

can range from very easy to very hard.

The Sudoku puzzle is a 9x9 grid that

starts with some numbers filled in.

The object is to fill the entire

grid such that the numbers 1 through 9

appear uniquely in each row, column,

and 3x3 block. It sounds

complicated until you give it a

try but the rules are simple to understand

once you have played one Sudoku puzzle.

we may well be

having a confab of

proxies. People who

represent their lords

and masters and not

t h e 16 0 m i l l i o n

people of Nigeria who

are desperate for a

change. That will

really be sad! Really

said!

D o w e n e e d a

national confab? If

there is a chance that

we will be able to put

honest, forthright,

proven Nigerians in

there who will only

speak on the side of

development and the

well being of the

peoples of Nigeria

without any ethnic,

national or sectoral

bias, then we should

have a nat iona l

dialogue. But I don't

think that Nigerians

will agree on this

'almost non-existent'

group of people. It is

like forming a jury in

an American court,

no matter how good

you are, the opposing

side does not want

you!

In the absence of this,

I don't think we

should waste our

time, and tones of

money in this exercise. I

don't think we should

raise people's hopes

that we will achieve a

result when we already

know that this will go

the way of other such

arrangements.

If you ask any Nigerian

what our problem is, I

don't think it wil l

include any of the issues

of our continued unity

o r p o l i t i c a l

arrangement. Everyone

knows that the problem

of Nigeria is corruption.

C o r r u p t i o n i s n o t

common to Nigeria or to

Nigerians. It is woven

into the fabr ic of

mankind. It is prevalent

h e r e b e c a u s e w e

c o n d o n e i t , eve n

c e l e b r a t e i t . O u r

institutions have failed.

There is no enforcement

of our laws. There is no

accountability at any

level. If we are able to

deal with corruption, we

would have solved all of

our problems. Our

problem is not NEPA, or

ASUU, or Boko Haram, or

Niger Delta Militants! It

is Corruption and the

kid gloves with which

we treat it. God forbid

that we have a situation

like the early years of

Jerry Rawlings in Ghana,

but i f we had an

enforcer, and we had

laws that are current

and realistic, and we

h a d i n s t i t u t i o n s

strengthened to make

this nation governable,

then we will see that we

will begin to progress.

Finally, we are a nation

that talks too much. We

talk too much but we do

nothing afterwards to

change our lives. I don't

think talking is the next

thing. I think we simply

need a government that

does not care whose ox

is gored. We need a

government that will

t a k e c o r r u p t i o n

seriously, make good

governance a cardinal

principle, and treat

c o m m i t m e n t

s u s t a i n a b l e

d e v e l o p m e n t a s

sacrosanct as the pope's

cap! In addition to that,

we need a people who

see our diversity as

strength, who will see

o u r s i z e a s a n

advantage, who will

look at the nation and

see its potential, who

wil l stand and be

counted as, first and

foremost, a NIGERIAN.

Thereafter, we can talk!

hen you

h e a r

people say Wthey want to tone it

up, it may just evoke

a feeling that they

want to lighten up

their complexion a

little. This may be

correct in certain

cases, but these

d ays , t h e m o re

acceptable life style

use of the word tone

is for the muscles,

not the skin colour.

Toning from a fitness

perspective is when

the amount of fat

you have covering

your muscles is

small enough to allow

the muscles to be

seen. It means more

muscles, less fat. The

process of toning

actually burns up

your fat so you have

more muscle instead.

The more muscle you

have and the less fat

you have covering it

the more toned you

are. Whenever anyone

says they want to tone

up, they are actually

saying they want to be

able to see their

muscle more than

before.

Let me sound a note of

c a u t i o n h e re ! A

balance needs to be

achieved between

muscle toning and

muscle building. A lot

of us simply want to

tone up, and not

become Mr or Ms

Universe. Therefore to

a c h i e v e m u s c l e

toning, you must be

careful that your

exercise regime is not

making you build

muscle instead.

Below are 7 important

things to do if you

desire to achieve a

toned body:

·Warm up: Warming

up is very important

for blood circulation

and this also helps to

get your body ready

f o r y o u r t o n i n g

exercise. You should

never simply jump

into the exercise

r o u t i n e w i t h o u t

warming up. Simple

warm up routines can

include running on

the spot, jumping (or

skipping) for a few

minutes.

·Swing: You can do

this holding a heavy

object like a dumbbell

or medicine bal l

between your legs in a

deep squat position,

then you stick out

your butt and avoid

leaning backward.

Then stand as fast as

you can and use the

force to swing the

weight overhead. Do

this 10-20 times.

·Pull up (jumping pull-

up): Jumping pull is a

very simple exercise. It

involves standing

with both legs apart

underneath a pull up

bar and jumping. You

will need to use the

momentum of your

jump to pull yourself

up as high as possible,

and then you will

lower yourself as

slowly as possible

back on to the floor.

The repeated jumping

and lowering helps

you burn up calories

and it also stimulate

your muscle cells.

Repeat this 10-20

times too.

·Lunge: If you desire to

achieve a lower body

toning you could try

the walking lunge

technique. Using this

technique, you step

forward with one leg,

dropping into a lunge

position, then take

one big step forward

and lunge with your

legs at the back. You

can add a little weight

by holding upright

2 k g e a c h o f

dumbbells while you

are lunging.

·Lose fats that are

covering the muscle: We all know what to

do when we are

determined to lose

our body fats, by

e x e r c i s i n g , a n d

cutting down on our

fatty food intake.

Cutting down the fat

intake actually helps

prevent the fat from

going back there.

·Don't be tempted to

build some more muscles: You can tone

up your muscles by

lifting lighter weight

both in upper part of

the body and lower

part of the body.

However, Do not do

higher repetition of

weight lifting, as it will

not make you tone

b u t b u i l d y o u r

muscle.

F l o o r e xe r c i s e s : Lifting weights help,

but they are not

enough. Do a lot of

floor exercises. Get

your mat and keep

moving.

Finally, remember

that no matter how

good your toning

workout is, you will

really need to follow

your diet strictly. You

will not move fat off

your body by adding

more calories and

eating the wrong

meals, so be sure you

p a i r t h e t o n i n g

w o r ko u t w i t h a

healthy diet fruit and

vegetables and be

steady.

Keep keeping fit.
