What is MOLD?

Molds produce tiny spores to reproduce. Mold spores waft

through the indoor and outdoor air continually. When mold

spores land on a damp spot indoors, they may begin growing

and digesting whatever they are growing on in order to survive.

There are molds that can grow on wood, paper, carpet, and

foods. When excessive moisture or water accumulates

indoors, mold growth will often occur, particularly if the

moisture problem remains undiscovered or un-addressed.

There is no practical way to eliminate all mold and mold spores

in the indoor environment, the way to control indoor mold

growth is to control moisture.

Can MOLD cause health problems?

Molds produce allergens (substances that can cause allergic

reactions), irritants, and in some cases, potentially toxic

substances (mycotoxins). In haling or touching mold or mold

spores may cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.

Allergic responses include hay fever-type symptoms such as

sneezing, runny nose, red eyes, and skin rash (dermatitis).

Allergic reactions to mold are common. They can be

immediate or delayed. Molds can also cause asthma attacks

in people with asthma who are allergic to mold. In addition,

mold exposure can irritate the eyes, skin, nose, throat, and

lungs of both mold-allergic and non-allergic people.

Concerned about MOLD in your home?

Does your home have a musty smell, dampness, water stains

under the kitchen or bathroom sinks, stains on the walls,

ceilings or floors? If so, you’re encouraged to call Dry Effect

right away to perform a mold inspection and testing.

Dry Effect can determine where the problem is and by testing

the suspected areas, we can establish what kind of mold is

present and its hazards to you and your family. We will also

advise you on how to remedy the problem to create a healthy

environment for your family.

Where is Mold Found in a home?

Mold can be found in any room of a house. It can be on

walls, floors, ceilings inside closets under carpeting and even

inside the walls.

Mold is commonly found in bathrooms and kitchens because

of the high moisture levels in these areas. But it can be

anywhere that there’s excessive moisture.

It is usually accompanied with a musty odor and appears as

small black circles, or sometimes a green, brown or grey

discoloration.

Mold Remediation / Cleanup

The purpose of mold remediation is to remove the mold to

prevent human exposure and damage to building materials

and furnishings. It is necessary to clean up mold

contamination, not just to kill the mold.

Mold Remediation Process 1. Identify and correct the source of moisture.

2. Seal off all surrounding contaminated areas with (6) mil

plastic and microbial free zones of the building/home by

use of a negative air pressure containment system. This

system will isolate the work area and prevent the mitigation

of contaminants to the unaffected areas of the home.

What is a MOLD Inspection?

A thorough inspection by Dry Effect involves a visual

investigation of the attic, crawlspace, roof, HVAC system

and any stains, discolorations or signs of moisture intrusion.

Samples will then be taken to provide a better assessment

of the problem areas.

Tape and/or Swab samples are collected from visible moldy

surfaces by wiping the area with a sterile swab or tape.

This type of sampling is used to identify specific mold types.

Air sampling is a means to determine the type and amount

of airborne contamination in an area. Air sampling may be

necessary if the presence of mold, allergens or toxins is

suspected (musty odors, allergies) but cannot be identified

by a visual inspection. When air sampling is performed,

both the indoor and outdoor air are samples so the results

can be compared to see if a problem exists.

Once the home has been evaluated and the test results

have been reviewed, action can be planned to clean the

affected areas and prevent future contamination. In all

situations, if mold exists, the underlying cause of water

damage must be corrected.

All Samples are processed and analyzed by a local

environmental laboratory.

Mold Removal Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best way to prevent mold?

The best way to prevent mold growth is to keep materials dry and if they get wet to dry them as quickly as possible.

How is it the remediation criteria determined?

The areas are identified by conditions not square footage: Condi-tion 1, 2 and 3.

What are the differences between the 3 conditions?

Condition 1- normal mold spore type and counts. Condition 2- con-taminated with settled spores (viable or nonviable) but does not have to be active growth. Condition 3- affected areas are visible and/or active growth of surfaces is present.

What is this large machine and purpose of it running all day?

After cleanup is complete a negative air machine is utilized such as an air scrubber. HEPA air scrubbers are capable of removing 99.97% of dry particulate down to 0.3 micron. Most of all mold spores are greater than 1.0 micron size. It is critical that the ma-chine runs continuous unless instructed otherwise to obtain optimal results.

Is it necessary to discard all my contents in my home?

No. Prior to cleaning the contents they will be categorized by their composition and level of contamination they contain. This will de-termine how and if the contents can be cleaned.
