Microsoft Surface (Codename: Milan ), is a Multi-touch product from Microsoft which is developed as asoftware and hardware combination technology thatallows a user, or multiple users, to manipulate digitalcontent by the use of natural motions, hand gestures, or

    physical objects .

The product behind the Milan project is called the MicrosoftSurface, and the company's unofficial Surface showman isJeff Gattis.

The name Surface comes from "surface computing,"and Microsoft envisions the coffee-table machine asthe first of many such devices.

Surface computing uses a blend of wireless protocols, special machine-readable tags and shape recognitionto seamlessly merge the real and the virtual world an idea the Milan team refers to as "blended reality.

The table can be built with a variety of wirelesstransceivers, including Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and(eventually) radio frequency identification (RFID).

It was announced on May 29, 2007 at D5 conference.

The preliminary launch was on April 17, 2008, whenSurface became available for customer use in AT&T

    stores.

It has at least a 25-year history, beginning in 1982, with pioneering work being done at the University of Toronto

(multi-touch tablets) and Bell Labs (multi-touch screens).

The product idea for Surface was initially conceptualized in2001 by Steven Bathiche of Microsoft Hardware and AndyWilson of Microsoft Research.

In October 2001, a virtual team was formed with Bathicheand Wilson as key members, to bring the idea to the nextstage of development.

The technology behind Surface is called Multi-touch.

Microsoft Surface applications can be written in WindowsPresentation Foundation or XNA. The development

process is much like normal Vista development, butcustom WPF controls had to be created by the Surfaceteam due to the unique interface of Surface.

Surface has no cables or external USB ports for plugging in

peripherals. For that matter, it has no keyboard, no mouse,no trackball no obvious point of interaction except itsscreen

Its an interesting product in that its completely out of leftfield.

Microsoft gives examples of ordering a beverage during ameal with just the tap of a finger and quickly browsing

through music and dragging favorite songs onto a personal playlist by moving a finger across the screen .Build this into a bar and youd get one-touch beer service

although Im not sure if theyve found a way to work outwhen your beer glass is empty so replenishment becomesautomatic, maybe in a later version.

A Surface computer is able to recognize physical objectsfrom a paintbrush to a cell phone and allows hands-on,direct control of content such as photos, music and maps.Surface turns an ordinary tabletop into a dynamic surfacethat provides interaction with all forms of digital contentthrough natural gestures, touch and physical objects.

    (1) Screen: A diffuser turns the Surface's acrylic tabletopinto a large horizontal "multitouch" screen, capable of

processing multiple inputs from multiple users. TheSurface can also recognize objects by their shapes or byreading coded "domino" tags.

    2) Infrared: Surface's "machine vision" operates in the near-infrared spectrum, using an 850-nanometer-wavelengthLED light source aimed at the screen. When objects touchthe tabletop, the light reflects back and is picked up bymultiple infrared cameras with a net resolution of 1280 x960.

    (3) CPU: Surface uses many of the same components foundin everyday desktop computers a Core 2 Duo processor,2GB of RAM and a 256MB graphics card. Wireless

communication with devices on the surface is handledusing WiFi and Bluetooth antennas (future versions mayincorporate RFID or Near Field Communications). Theunderlying operating system is a modified version of Microsoft Vista.

    4) Projector: Microsoft's Surface uses the same DLP lightengine found in many rear-projection HDTVs. The

footprint of the visible light screen, at 1024 x 768 pixels, isactually smaller than the invisible overlapping infrared projection to allow for better recognition at the edges of the screen

    Surface is a 30-inch (76 cm) display in a table-like formfactor, 22 inches (56 cm) high, 21 inches (53 cm)deep, and 42 inches (107 cm) wide.

The Surface tabletop is acrylic, and its interior frame is powder-coated steel. The software platform runs on acustom version of Windows Vista and has wiredEthernet 10/100, wireless 802.11 b/g, and Bluetooth2.0 connectivity.

Surface applications are written using either WindowsPresentation Foundation or Microsoft XNAtechnology.

Direct interaction refers to the user's ability to simply reachout and touch the interface of an application in order tointeract with it, without the need for a mouse or keyboard.

Multi-touch contact refers to the ability to have multiplecontact points with an interface, unlike with a mouse, where there is only one cursor

Multi-user is a benefit of multi-touch -- several people canorient themselves on different sides of the surface tointeract with an application simultaneously.

Object recognition refers to the device's ability to recognizethe presence and orientation of tagged objects placed ontop of it.

The technology allows non-digital objects to be used asinput devices
