Each April since 1987, the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (NCADD) has sponsored Alcohol Awareness Month to increase public awareness and understanding, reduce stigma and encourage local communities to focus on alcoholism and alcohol-related issues.

This year’s theme, “For the Health of It: Early Education on Alcoholism and Addiction,” aims at educating people about the treatment and prevention of alcoholism, particularly among youths.

Alcohol use by young people is extremely dangerous — even for those who may never develop a dependence or addiction.

Adolescence is a time of heightened risk taking and young people may not be fully prepared to anticipate all the consequences of drinking alcohol, such as swigging drinks to “celebrate” a special occasion, or being in a car with a driver who has been drinking.

Alcohol is the number one drug of choice for America’s youth, and is more likely to kill young people than all illegal drugs combined.

Using alcohol and drugs before the brain has fully developed increases your risk for future addiction to alcohol and drugs dramatically.  Young people who start drinking alcohol before age 15 are

five times more likely to develop alcohol abuse or dependence than people who first used alcohol at age 21 or older.  Research for drug use and drug addiction has found similar results.

Whether a person decides to use alcohol or drugs is a choice, influenced by their environment — peers, family and availability.  But, once a person uses alcohol or drugs, the risk of developing alcoholism or drug dependence is largely influenced by genetics.  Alcoholism and drug dependence are not moral issues, are not a matter of choice or a lack of willpower. Plain and simple, people’s bodies respond to the effects of alcohol and drugs differently.  If you have a family history of alcoholism or addiction, you are four times more likely to develop a problem. 

FAST FACTS: The Scope of the Problem22.6 million people (9.2 percent) of the U.S. population ages 12 and older have an alcohol or drug problem. 2.4 million adolescents have an alcohol or drug problem. 50 percent of adults have a family member with alcoholism.Approximately one in four children under 18 live in a family with alcoholism, and many more live in a family with drug addiction. Alcoholism is the third leading lifestyle-related cause of death in the nation. Alcoholism and drug dependence cost the nation over $276 billion a year, resulting principally from lost productivity and increased health care spending.
