The Michigan Dairy Cattle News is beginning it’s second year with our first collaboration with Midwest Holsteins. This special feature inserted into our magazine contains breeder ads from

Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa and Minnesota. We have several Michigan breeders who took advantage of this opportunity to be showcased in five different state magazines. We hope you enjoy this special edition of the magazine as we hope to make this an annual feature. If you have suggestions or questions about the magazine, advertising or just want to chat, please contact me at [email protected] or call or text 517-398-1957.

Notes From the Field

Spring is finally here, the sun is shining and the planting season has started! I hope everyone is

enjoying this warm weather as much as I am. Along with warm weather what does that mean… show season is also among us! I wanted to remind you about a couple of things that are coming up. All animals must have two forms of ID to be able to be shown this includes 2 ear tags, a drawing and a ear tag, two sketches, or two pictures! This will make check in as fast and efficient as possible! For national shows, all animals must have a USDA 840 ear tag to be eligible for show!

Please let your Holstein Representative know if you have any questions to any show rules or qualifications. We will most certainly be happy to help you! I hope

everyone is as excited for show season as I am!

Next, there is some big news happening at Holstein USA recently, in regards to ET/IVF Recovery Forms! As of May 1st, Holstein USA Inc is no longer requiring ET/IVF Recovery Forms for registering animals. Instead of the forms, we are requiring more information in regards to these calves when you submit the registration application. Easy ID has been updated to a newer version with these changes. Instead of Recovery Forms, you will be contacted by Holstein USA Inc about genomic testing these animals. If you have any questions about these exciting changes please contact Max, myself or office. We are extremely ecstatic about these changes and we

hope you are too!

If you need anything else in regards to registrations, transfers, or any of our other services please contact one of your Holstein Regional Representatives! We look forward to working with you and we wish you the best of luck in your show and crop seasons!!

Sincerely,

Mandi Ramsburg Regional Representative Upper Peninsula of Michigan

I always hesitate to start my “letter from the president” aimed only at Jersey breeders. I grew up on a Holstein farm

in Hillsdale Co. When my father returned to his home farm in 1957 and started farming with my grandfather, there were mostly Holsteins and a few Guernseys, but no Jerseys.

In my youth I was the county outstanding Holstein girl. I married a Holstein boy. I thought I was thoroughly entrenched. I still own several Holsteins! I didn’t get Jerseys in my life until my daughter Emily begged her Grandpa Green to buy her

a Jersey calf at the District 6 All Breed Calf Sale. That’s Michigan Holstein Association District 6! So I guess you can say it was Holstein folks that got me in the Jersey business. And here I am, president of our state Jersey association!!

I guess what I’m saying is, Jersey breeders, or people who have Jerseys, can come from anywhere. I just read somewhere that years ago the famous Beatle John Lennon and his wife Yoko bought a herd of Holsteins. How cool is that! In the big picture we could take this line of thinking into everything in our lives.

Anytime, anywhere could be opportunity just waiting for us!

So whatever your breed, (or passion), love it, promote it, and tell people about it. You never know who may come knocking at your door!

Have a great summer!!

One of the trademark looks of the Jersey was the rather short head with the distinct dish in the forehead. That was before the larger Jerseys were bred with larger and stronger heads. The Jersey always had the broad muzzle, good for the pasture grazing from the beginning of time. The one trait of the Jersey has always been the best uddered cow of all the breeds but now with the more capacious and still well balanced udders they are able to produce so much milk and do it more efficiently than any other dairy breed. The Jersey remains the gentlest and most pleasing animal to

work with.Speaking of heads, remember the horned Jerseys? We worked harder on those horns preparing an animal for the show ring than any other aspect of the fitting or train-ing. There were the horn weights to bring the horns down, the wires or purchased ap-paratus to turn them in. The endless hours that were spent with sand paper and emery cloth and then the final coat of polish. And to think we never got a drop of milk from those horns. However, many a good cow lost a quarter to the horns of a herdmate who wanted to move her out of the way.

Do you remember the nice looking chain that was over the horns and hung down on the forehead? It was quite a shock at first to see the horns go, but in the end what a blessing.Another chore of fitting for the show ring was the blanketing and keeping the blan-kets on and clean. Nowadays the coats are fit more with better feed rations and experts with the clippers.Looking back at things past when did hand stripping behind the milking machine cease? Probably about the time the one legged or three legged milk stool did.

In Memoriam

Former MMPA President Elwood Kirkpatrick passes away at 79

Former dairy industry leader and Michigan Milk Producers Association (MMPA) President Elwood Kirkpatrick, of Kinde, Michigan passed away on May 16 at the age of 79. Kirkpatrick served the dairy industry for over 28 years in various leadership positions, including 26 years as president of Michigan Milk Producers Association. Throughout his presidency, Kirkpatrick served the cooperative and dairy industry on both state and national levels through his involvement in a number of agriculture and dairy related organizations.

Kirkpatrick was elected to serve on the MMPA board of directors in 1979 where his aptitude in finance quickly earned him the respect of fellow board members who elected him as president of MMPA in 1981. He continued to serve as MMPA president until his retirement from the board in March 2007.

“The dairy industry lost a great leader.

Elwood Kirkpatrick made a tremendous impact on the dairy industry on both the state and national level,” MMPA President Ken Nobis said. “He played an important role in shaping today’s dairy industry, and his vision will live on.”

In Michigan, Kirkpatrick served as chair of the Michigan Dairy Industry Committee, was a member of the United Dairy Industry of Michigan board of directors and had served on the Michigan Agriculture Commission.

On the national level, Kirkpatrick served on the executive committee of the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) for 23 years, including serving as NMPF vice president from 1983-2003.

An example of his leadership character emerged in the late 1980s when he helped lead the charge to unify the promotion and marketing efforts of the U.S. dairy industry, bringing together the activities of the United Dairy Industry Association and the National Dairy Board through the formation of Dairy Management Incorporated, creating greater efficiencies in the national dairy promotion program.

Kirkpatrick accomplished many notable successes for the dairy industry, but one of his most influential roles was serving as the first chairman of the U.S. Dairy Export Council. From its inception, Kirkpatrick worked tirelessly to establish and grow the U.S. dairy export sector. At the time of its start, dairy exports represented less than 3 percent of annual U.S. milk production. Today, exports of U.S. dairy products exceed over 15 percent of U.S. milk production.

Kirkpatrick served as Chair of the U.S. Agricultural Technical Advisory Committee for Trade in Animals & Animal Products (ATAC) and was a member of the U.S. Agricultural Policy Advisory Committee for Trade (APAC).

As an accomplished dairy farmer, Kirkpatrick had been recognized with

Michigan State University’s “Dairy Farmer of the Year” award in 1986 and the “Distinguished Service to Agriculture” award in 1987.

Upon Kirkpatrick’s retirement in 2007, the MMPA board of directors established the Elwood Kirkpatrick Dairy Science Research Fund at Michigan State University. The endowment fund pays tribute to Kirkpatrick’s dedication to advancing the research needs of the dairy industry. Kirkpatrick was instrumental in the establishment of the Revitalization of Animal Agriculture Initiative signed into Michigan law in 1993.

Kirkpatrick was born in Dwight Township on January 30, 1937 to the late Ross A. and Eula (Arnott) Kirkpatrick and was a lifetime dairy farmer.

He is survived by his wife, Michelle Kirkpatrick of Dwight Township; daughters: Lisa (Craig) Iden of Kinde and Rebecca Waling of Texas; sons: Dean (Maureen) Kirkpatrick, Ron (Andrea) Kirkpatrick, both from Kinde and Brad (Amy) Kirkpatrick of Traverse City; granddaughters: Corey, Casey, Brooke, and Natalie; grandsons: Randy, Dallas, Sean, Eric, Derek, Nathan, Colin and Ryan; and a special cousin, Beverly (Arnott) McFarland from Bay City. He was preceded in death by his cousin, Leslie Arnott.

Memorials may be offered to Heartland Hospice or to the Bad Axe Free Methodist Church.

Elwood Kirkpatrick, dairy industry leader, passed away May 16, 2016. Kirkpatrick served the dairy industry for over 28 years in various leadership positions, including 26 years as president of Michigan Milk Producers Association.

Sunshine, blue skies, green grass and cows being let out on the pasture for the first time this spring, running wild, are just a few of our favorite sites to see as farmers. Spring shows have already come and gone, new winners in the show ring are being talked about and our state shows are quickly approaching. With these events happening all around us it has made for an eventful few months for the Michigan Junior Holstein Association!

We had an extremely successful annual semen and embryo sale this past April. Our sale consisted of four embryo lots, eight semen lots, and a flush and freeze package graciously all donated to us. Jerry Jorgenson and RI-VAL-RE Genetics donated the four embryo lots. Dr. Jon Gunther donated the flush and freeze package. Our generous semen donators are as followed: Sunrose Holsteins, Hardys Holsteins, Class Holsteins, SEMEX, ABS, Northstar Cooperative, Michigan Livestock Service and International Protein Sires. We can’t even begin to express how much we appreciate the support of all of those who donated! You are what keep the youth in Michigan going and are helping tremendously in developing the future leaders of Michigan’s dairy industry. During our semen and embryo sale the Westendorp family and owners of MOO-ville creamery hosted a breakfast table full of delicious dairy products, fruit and biscuits and gravy! A big thank you to the Westendorp family for always being eager to help out the juniors in any way possible. It is GREATLY appreciated and you gave everyone fuel for a long day of sales!

Our board is very excited to announce that we officially have a group of 15 kids headed to the National Holstein Convention in Saratoga Springs, New York this June to represent Michigan in various contests! We are so happy to have a big group of young representatives going and look forward to seeing what we can bring to the table!

With all of that being said, I wanted to take a minute to reminisce on my time here as President of the Michigan Junior Holstein

Board as my term and junior membership is coming to an end this July. For all of you who don’t know, I have been a part of this board of directors since I was 12 years old. Over the past 10 years this board has taught me leadership, networking, planning, responsibility and a million other positive skills I could list. Not only has being a part of this board taught me these crucial skills, it also helped me develop life-long friendships that I know I will have forever. It may sound cliché, but you truly do become family with the people you work side by side with all year around. It has been such a cool experience starting on the youngest side of the spectrum and now ending my time as the oldest one on the board. It is an awesome feeling to be able to watch the younger members grow and develop just as I did through my years with Michigan Junior Holstein. It is my goal that all of my board members, and other youth members get to have the best experiences of their lives as I did being a part of this board. I want to encourage anyone who has thought about running for a director position on the board to go for it and not be intimidated. When I was 12 I was extremely nervous to dive into this opportunity, especially since everyone else was way older and more experience than me. It turned out to be one of the best decisions of my life and has opened so many doors that never would have been opened for me.

As I sign off for the last time as a junior in this magazine, I just wanted to end by

saying THANK YOU. Thank you to the youth in Michigan for being so eager to be involved in this industry and always being enthusiastic. Thank you to my board members that have cycled through. You guys have worked so hard and have been some of the best friends a girl could ask for! Thank you to my adult advisors who have put many hours of work into helping us succeed as young professionals and never getting frustrated with our many questions! A special shout-out to the adult advisors: Jessica Jakubik, Melissa Hart, Louisa Westendorp and Laura Moser, as well as Jennie Koebel (who isn’t a current advisor, but was an amazing one in her time as one.) You are five of the most influential women I could’ve asked to work besides and grow up, looking up to. Thank you SO much for constantly supporting me and helping develop me into the woman I am today as I end my junior Holstein career. Finally, THANK YOU to the dairy industry for providing so many amazing, unique opportunities that I never could’ve dreamed of having. I am truly blessed to be a part of the best industry in the world and look forward to the next chapter of my life.

Respectively Submitted for the final time as a junior member,

Hayleigh Geurink
