    AUGUST M K , M I S S I O N A R Y A N D T H I R D - C U L T U R E A D V O C A T E 2011

What a busy few months these have been! Since I last wrote, Ive had major surgery (it was NOT cancer!), returned to

Germany to pack up and move permanently to the States (see video, p. 2), and spent an intensive summer of ministry.

LEAVING HOME: Just six weeks after surgery, I boarded a plane for Germany. I had ten days to pack up 20 years of

life there and load it all into a container bound for Wheaton. As you can imagine, the tearing-away from everything that

has been home to me for so many years held its measure of pain, but it was beautiful too. I was blessed to revisit

favorite places and to reconnect with former students in the days before and after graduation, to brush lives again and

gain a better understanding of what being an MK means to each of them. I left with a sad heart (all transition requires

loss), but with the certainty that God has orchestrated this move to a different and broader ministry to the MKs I love.

    MINISTRY NEWS:

It was so exciting to see my new ministry take wing during the summer

months...I even had to turn down several invitations because of time constraints!

TeachBeyond: I spoke at their pre-field orientation, preparing MK

educators (and new missionary parents) for the special needs of TCKs.

TEAM: I was honored to be invited to be the main speaker at TEAMs MK-

Reentry conference. It took days (weeks?) to prepare the sessions on loss,

identity, relationships and transition... Theyve asked me back for next year!

Church at Sandhurst: This large church in SC flew me down to speak to

the congregation about the need for MK ministry and to spend a day

debriefing with local MKs. Fascinating conversations about the MK experience!

Operation Mobilization: While in South Carolina, I was invited to speak

at the OM Ships headquarters. Though the majority of those present were

parents of MKs, many had never considered the issues I raised. I was excited

to be asked if Id be willing to fly to one of the ships this spring and bring

similar sessions to the missionary families who live between worlds.

Wheaton College: I served as a consultant for its International Student

Orientation. Well be strategizing how to improve an already great program.

Phone, Email, Skype, Facebook: The rest of my ministry this summer

took the form of modern communication. The calls and messages came nearly

daily. Whether from missionary-care organizations looking for insight into

specific cases, from MKs struggling with identity or from missionaries

preparing to head to the field, the conversations have been challenging,

enlightening and sobering. Im so humbled by this vital new ministry!

And now... The next few months will be filled with mentoring MKs starting

college in North America, with seeking new places and opportunities to

minister, and with creating more modern and pertinent materials than those

currently available on these topics. No rest for the ... blessed.

I will lead you on unfamiliar roads. I will turn darkness into light before you.I will make rough places smooth. I will never abandon you.
