The famous ‘Sacra di San Michele’ abbey is

a religious complex of matchless beautyand value, symbol of the Piedmont region. It grows up on Mount Pirchiriano, in anextraordinary dominant position on theentrance of the Susa Valley.

Seen from below, this mountain seems torise into the sky as if suspended in avacuum.

Originally it was called Mount Porcariano, the Swine’s Mountain.

Then the name was changed in Pirchiriano,

that means "made by fire", in honour of the

archangel Michele.

In the Holy Bible the archangel Michele isthe prince of the Heavenly army, fightingagainst Satan. This is why Saint Michele isrevered as the defender of the Church andof Christian people.

He is often depicted with his sword in theact of fighting against evil, surrounded byflames.

Legend has it that St. John the Bishop, called Vincent, who retired in prayer on a mountain nearby, decidedto build a church, but inexplicably the material used to build it disappeared during the night. The bishop decided to discover what was really happening. One night he saw angels flying and carrying thestones on the top of Mount Porcoriano. The archangel Michele suddenly appeared to him and pointed outthat rock as the place to build his church. Then the bishop moved the site in the place shown.

In fact, at the end of 900 A.D., some chapels of the Benedictine monks were located all over that mountain,

but were no longer able to accommodate pilgrims.

Around 1000 A.D. a nobleman went to the Pope asking to be forgiven of his sins: the Pope agreed but asked

him to build an abbey and to live according to respect and devotion of the catholic believes.

A century later the sizes of the abbey were not even enough to accommodate travelers, so the Sacra wasfinally erected in early 1100 A.D.

Another legend says that a girl namedAlda, to escape the soldiers during theFranco-Spanish war, he decided to get out

a window of the tower because she refuced to live without the respects of the rules she received during her life .

She was saved by angels thatlaid her down gently on the ground.

The girl thought she could throw herselfagain in the air, because of vanity andmoney, and was sure that she can besaved again: but this time the angels didnot help her.

Due to its strategic location, the abbey was the scene of

several wars and military facts.

Over the centuries has lost its importance and declineduntil it was deleted. Then, thanks to the interest of theSavoy Family, there were renovation and consolidation.

In 1836 King Charles Albert took away from theCathedral in Turin the bodies of 24 Savoy princes,

whichare currently in the church in stone sarcophagi.

Today the Sacra is guarded by the Holy FatherRosminiani. The building is well worth visiting to admire the steepStaircase of the Dead (so called because the bodies ofmonks were exposed there during funeral ceremonies),which ends with the Door of the Zodiac, a masterpieceof Romanesque sculpture of the twelfth century. Insidethe church you can admire the beautiful frescoes andpaintings. From the left side of the church you can get to a

lookoutpoint, where you can enjoy an impressive view over theSusa Valley.

On 14 July 1991, the abbey was visited by Pope JohnPaul II.
