Friday 09 June 2006 Issue No. 146 If you wish to have something featured in a future edition of aspire please email [email protected] or call ext. 2163 “Putting people at the heart of everything we do” There are many discounts available for NHS Staff and a whole list of them is kept on the Trust’s own directory of local companies. The staff Discounts section on TrustNet holds information about restaurants, shops and other organisations that offer a discount to NHS staff in this local area. You can access this list from any PC within the Trust that can see TrustNet. Simply click the link that says ‘staff discounts’. If you know of a local company that may be able to offer a discount to NHS staff and they would like to advertise this with us, we can add them to the directory. Simply email [email protected] If Discounts are of interest you should also have a look at NHSdiscounts.com. There are links from there to places like NHS Electric where you can get great discounts on all sorts of household electricals. Matron Carole Webster is pictured here with Staff Nurse Lanny Burke on Aspen ward where the signs are being trialled with much success. Please ask permission before you enter As part of the special month - the Privacy and Dignity group have implemented a trial of new signs on Aspen and Kestrel wards to help patients preserve their privacy when they are behind closed curtains. The new signs remind all who approach the closed curtains that they should ask permission before entering the area. The trial has been running for a couple of weeks already and is proving very successful. The signs are acting as a reminder to both staff and visitors that the curtains are closed for a reason, and that you should always check that it is okay to enter before you go through. The signs will be rolled out across all wards in the near future as the trial has been considered a success. This month we are launching a focus on Clinical Care, and will be concentrating in particular on Privacy and Dignity, Patient Comfort and Patient Nutrition. We appreciate that everyone is under a lot of pressure within the Trust at the moment, concentrating on capacity, budgeting and future planning, but the purpose behind these themed months is to really focus in on the ‘patient experience’ and to come up with some measurable improvements. There is some really excellent work going on around the Trust that we know about, and probably an awful lot that we don’t know about. The purpose behind these themes is to concentrate on certain areas so that we can produce ‘real’ outcomes that really do improve our patients’ experience with us. For example, during Communications Month, a patients’ relative was invited to the Medical Unit’s Joint Sister’s Meeting to discuss communication issues for patients with dementia. This was a really positive experience, as communication had been poor, and acted as a good learning tool for the Sisters and to cascade down to staff. Similarly, many wards have had a drive on ‘meeting and greeting’ visitors and patients, and our Matrons have been on a series of walkabouts to improve communication with patients and their relatives. During Risk Month, the Clinical Site Nurse Practitioners ran some training at night on fire evacuation, specifically for the night staff and a series of Risk Awareness sessions was put on by Colin Matthews and Marty Williams as part of their ongoing programme. This time next month we hope to be able to report in a similar way on this month’s theme, so put your thinking caps on and let’s really focus in on these key areas. We will be supporting the month with the usual Daily Tips on the E-bulletin, starting again this week, and would welcome any features for the next Aspire Bulletin. Focusing on Clinical Care Michaela Morris Joyce Winson Smith Congratulations to all those who have successfully completed their NVQ and who were presented with their certificate at an award ceremony on 26th May. The certificates were presented by Christine Jones (Head of Workforce and Organisational Development). The presentation was followed by lunch organised to celebrate the achievement of NVQ candidates who have gained their awards in the past year. H/MCA Development Sister Dolly Bhaskaran said: “We are very proud of all our NVQ achievers this year. Congratulations to you all.” Care level 3 Michael Craig, Hilda Millroy, Emma McColl Health & Social Care Level 3 Anne Curran, Rose Foster, Maria Hackett Care Level 2 Karen Hudson, Sarah Rogers, Angela Wade Health & Social Care Level 2 Maureen Bush, Kim Pegado, Michelle Rawson, Wafa Ibrahim NVQ Assessor Award (A1) Baksho Bolino (Arnold ward), and Jane Sinclair (Maternity) NVQ candidates are pictured here with, Peripatetic NVQ Assessor Sue Shaw, Head of workforce and organisational development Christine Jones (third from right), H/MCA Development Sister Dolly Bhaskaran (extreme right) Congratulations on your NVQ! Discounts available for all staff Adult Protection Awareness Week 12 th – 18 th June Adult Protection Awareness Week will be taking place throughout Surrey next week, from 12 to 18 June 2006 and is being co-ordinated by the Surrey Adult Protection Committee. The campaign will include a range of activities, involving partner agencies and the general public across Surrey, to raise awareness for safeguarding vulnerable adults. The Department of Health has defined a vulnerable adult as; ‘A person who is, or may be, in need of Community Care services by reason of mental or other disability, age or illness.’ The Surrey Adult Protection Committee (S.A.P.C.) includes members from the mental health trust, acute hospital trusts, including Ashford & St Peter’s, local primary care trusts, including North Surrey and Surrey Heath and Woking PCTs, the Police, local borough councils, Surrey County Council, the independent voluntary sector and adults and community care. The group meets bi-monthly to discuss issues around vulnerable adults whilst providing a range of training seminars and workshops. A Communications and Publicity sub-group also produces information for staff, members of the public and vulnerable adults to identify and report abuse. Look out for our awareness stands in the main reception area.
