DANIEL 12:1

• “At that time Michael shall stand up,

The great prince who stands watch over the sons of your people;

And there shall be a time of trouble,

Such as never was since there was a nation,

Even to that time.

And at that time your people shall be delivered,

Every one who is found written in the book..

WHO IS MICHAEL?

• Scripture gives us the names of two good angels, who play important roles in human

history. One of these two angels is Michael.

• Gabriel

• Michael

• While we are not given the name of every angel, the fact that hear these two names in

Scripture is quite significant.

THE NAME MICHAEL MEANS

•  The name Michael means, “Who is like God.”

MICHAEL APPEARS IN THE OT AS AN ANGEL OF THE LORD

• Exodus 3:2-4 The angel of the Lord who appears to Moses in the burning bush

• While tending the flock of his father-in-law at Horeb, Moses saw that a burning bush

was not being consumed by the fire. As he approached the bush, v. 2 clearly states

that the angel of the LORD appeared to him in the flames of the bush. It is stated in v.

4 that the LORD spoke to him from within the bush. In v. 6 the Being in the bush further

identifies that He was the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. As the conversation

continues between these two, the Being in the bush announces His name, “I AM WHO

I AM” (v. 14). Thus, this passage indicates that the angel of the LORD mentioned in v.

2 is clearly identified by Himself and accepted by Moses as the infinite God.

THE ANGEL OF THE LORD WHO TAKES AWAY SIN

• Zechariah 3:1-10 - The angel of the Lord takes away the sin of the high priest Joshua

• The content of Zechariah’s fourth vision focuses on Israel’s future cleansing from sin and reinstatement

as a priestly nation. Verse 1 introduces the participants: “Then he showed me Joshua the high priest

standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right side to accuse him” (NIV 2011).

More specifically, these participants are Joshua the high priest, the antecedent of “he” is the interpreting

angel (he is referred to in 1:9, 14, 19; 2:3; 4:1, 3, 5; etc.; in light of 1:9 the interpreting angel was

apparently present to explain some of the details of these visions to Zechariah), the antecedent of “me”

is Zechariah, the angel of the LORD, and Satan. In this verse Joshua is described as standing before

the angel of the LORD, and Satan is pictured as standing at the right hand of the angel of the LORD to

resist him. With this introduction to the vision we should note that the angel of the LORD is the focal

point around which the following context revolves.

Page 9: Michael standing up - ewcsda.com · • Michael is usually shown with a sword, or carrying the scales of justice. Renaissance paintings show him wearing armor. These are all symbols

THE ANGEL OF THE LORD WHO TAKES AWAY SIN

•The first half of v. 2 reads like this: “The LORD said to Satan, ‘The LORD rebuke you,

Satan!’” In light of the participants mentioned in v. 1, we could read this verse in this

fashion: “And the LORD, that is the angel of the LORD, said unto Satan, ‘The LORD

rebuke you, Satan.’” Therefore, v. 2 identifies the angel of the LORD as the LORD and

indicates that there is a distinction between the angel of the LORD and the LORD. This

identification is further substantiated in v. 4. If we follow the context of vv. 2–4 carefully, we

should notice that it is the angel of the LORD who forgives sin in v. 4. Since God is the

only one who forgives sin, it is readily apparent that the angel of the LORD is God.

Consequently, this passage provides solid support for both the deity of the angel of the

LORD and his distinctiveness from the LORD.• (https://www.biblestudytools.com/blogs/theologically-driven/who-is-the-angel-of-the-lord-in-the-old-

THE ANGEL OF THE LORD WHO APPEARS TO MANOAH AND HIS WIFE

• Judges 13:3-22 The angel of the Lord appears to Manoah and his wife and, in

verse 16, tells them to offer to the LORD if they are to make an offering ("And the

angel of the LORD said unto Manoah [...] if thou wilt offer a burnt offering, thou

must offer it unto the LORD. For Manoah knew not that he was an angel of the

LORD."). Later Manoah thought he and his wife will die for they "have seen God.”

• Zechariah 1:12 The angel of the Lord pleads with the Lord to have mercy on

Jerusalem and the cities of Judah.

THE ANGEL OF THE LORD WHO MEETS GIDEON

fears for his life because he has seen an angel of the Lord face to face.

THE CONCLUSION WE DRAW FROM THE OVERVIEW OF BOTH TESTAMENTS IS THAT

• Michael is deity who manifested himself as an angel. Since no one has ever

seen God the Father (John 1:18; 1 Tim 6:16) and since the Holy Spirit never

takes on bodily form, this suggests that the supernatural Being to which the

expression Michael refers is the second member of the Trinity. His manifestation

was a temporary manifestation of the LORD Jesus Christ in a preincarnate form.

• In his incarnate form, Jesus never manifests himself as an angel. He was limited

by his humanity.

THE PORTRAYAL OF MICHAEL IN HISTORY

• Most angels in the Bible are portrayed as messengers, but Michael is described

in all three books as contending, fighting, or standing against all evil spirits and

principalities.

MICHAEL CONTENDING AGAINST THE ARCHENEMY OF GOD AND HIS PEOPLE

• Jude 1:9: “But when the archangel Michael, contending with the devil, was

disputing about the body of Moses, he did not presume to pronounce a

blasphemous judgment, but said, ‘The Lord rebuke you.'

GOSPEL WORKERS 327.1

• Satan is standing ready, burning with zeal to inspire the whole confederacy of

satanic agencies, that he may cause them to unite with evil men, and bring upon

the believers of truth speedy and severe suffering. Every unwise word that is

uttered by our brethren will be treasured up by the prince of darkness. How dare

finite human intelligences speak careless and venturesome words that will stir up

the powers of hell against the saints of God, when Michael the archangel durst

not bring against Satan a railing accusation, but said, “The Lord rebuke thee”?

GOSPEL WORKERS - 327.2

It will be impossible for us to avoid difficulties and suffering. Jesus said, “It must

needs be that offenses come; but woe to that man by whom the offense cometh.”

[Matthew 18:7.] But because offenses will come, we should be careful not to stir

up the natural temperament of those who love not the truth, by unwise words,

and by the manifestation of an unkind spirit. GW 327.2

GOSPEL WORKER’S 327.2

Precious truth must be presented in its native force. The deceptive errors that are wide-spread,

and that are leading the world captive, are to be unveiled. Every effort possible is being made to

ensnare souls with subtle reasonings, to turn them from the truth to fables, and to prepare them

to be deceived by strong delusions. But while these deceived souls turn from the truth to error,

do not speak to them one word of censure. Seek to show them their danger, and to reveal to

them how grievous is their course of action toward Jesus Christ; but let it be done in pitying

tenderness. By a proper manner of labor some of the souls who are ensnared by Satan may be

recovered from his power. But do not blame and condemn them. To ridicule the position held by

those who are in error, will not open their blind eyes, nor attract them to the truth. GW 328.1

PATRIARCHS AND PROPHETS - PP 761.5

• Christ is the One through whom God has at all times revealed Himself to man. “But to us there is

but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by

whom are all things, and we by Him.” 1 Corinthians 8:6. “This is he [Moses], that was in the church

in the wilderness with the Angel which spake to him in the Mount Sinai, and with our fathers: who

received the lively oracles to give unto us.” Acts 7:38. This Angel was the Angel of God's presence

(Isaiah 63:9), the Angel in whom was the name of the great Jehovah (Exodus 23:20-23). The

expression can refer to no other than the Son of God. PP 761.4

Again: Christ is called the Word of God. John 1:1-3. He is so called because God gave His

revelations to man in all ages through Christ. It was His Spirit that inspired the prophets. 1 Peter

1:10, 11. He was revealed to them as the Angel of Jehovah, the Captain of the Lord's host, Michael

the Archangel.

THE STANDING UP OF MICHAEL

• In Daniel’s last vision, an angel describes how the last days Michael will stand up

for the people of God will play out for the Jews. It is at this time that Michael, “the

great prince who stands guard over the sons of your people will arise” (Daniel

12:1). The angel also refers to Michael as Daniel’s prince (Daniel 10:21).

MICHAEL COMING BACK FOR HIS PEOPLE

• 1 Thessalonians 4:16 NKJV

• For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an

archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise

first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with

them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with

the Lord.

THE PROTECTION

• Michael is engaged in a ceaseless war against the forces

of evil.
