01 REINHABITING THE CITYAssisted Living Facility & Housing Development
Fall 2014
Birmingham, AL
Alagasco Design Competition Honorable Mention
The generation now moving into assisted living facilities was among the first to move out of downtown Birmingham and into the expanding suburbs. This was due to prejudices against the city, racial tension and an idealistic concept of suburbia, which still must be overcome today. The assisted living facility translates the positive aspects of suburbia into a densified urban development in downtown Birmingham. The design references suburbia in scale and function where necessary to allow the suburban notion of independence to remain intact within a dependent living condition.
Revit, Sketchup, AutoCad, Maxwell Render, Adobe Suite
All units have access to daylight and fresh air from two sides.
Public front porches and private back porches
Residents without a full sized front porch enter through an exaggerated threshold
The arrangement of the units provides a removed visual connection with the neighbors above, below and on either side, similar to watching a neighbor over a suburban hedge. This creates a sense of community without compromising the suburban sense of security and ownership.
The building is broken up into four neighborhoods to provide a sense of street identity.

HILL HOUSE
The house along the Chattahoochee River balances the primary living space in a box truss over a thick, structural wall, with tension cables pulling the north end to the ground so that the south end could be kept free of significant structure. The front entrance bridges over the automobile entrance, separating the guest bedrooms from the master bedroom and living space. The form of the house also takes advantage of prevailing winds from the river by allowing the breeze to pass under and cool the home.

04 RURAL STUDIO 20K HOUSESFall 2013
Footwash, AL
The Auburn University’s Rural Studio is a design/build program in which students create socially aware buildings in the impoverished community of Hale County, Alabama. The 20k house project seeks to develop a product line of affordable and dignified homes to replace mobile homes. As 3rd year students we analyzed, modified and built two existing 20k designs for a client and her adult son.

Rome, Italy
The study abroad program with the University of Arkansas Rome Center focuses on urban and historical context within the eternal city through design charette and on-site drawing to understand nuance of space and form. The design proposal is a rare book library spanning over layers of ancient and medieval ruins, acting as a barrier between the Imperial Forums and a modern neighborhood.
