Large-print bulletins are available.

Welcome to Grace! We're glad you've joined us as we gather to be encountered by God in Word and Sacrament. We

believe that God is at work here to create and sustain faith in God’s promise of love and

forgiveness through Jesus Christ. We use a rich, traditional pattern of worship that dates back to

the early days of Christianity. We recognize it comes with a bit of a learning curve, but we’re

convinced that it’s worth the effort. Don’t feel like you have to get everything the first time.

We’ll “carry” you until you get a feel for it.

Helpful information for first-time visitors:

Restrooms are in the hall to the left of the entrance, on the right opposite the elevator.

Our staffed nursery for children 4 and younger is on the right past the restrooms.

Clipboards with crayons and activity sheets are on a table in the Narthex (Lobby).

Other activities for young children are in the pink and blue totes.

Our pastor enjoys meeting visitors. Please introduce yourself.

Please sign the Friendship Register located on the pew, next to the center aisle, and pass it to

the person next to you during the Offering portion of the service.

Key to the order of service:

Regular type: spoken by a leader

“Favorite Hymn” request

As We Gather: The archangel Michael is pictured as a prince and a general of the

heavenly army, defeating the dragon (the ancient serpent, the devil, Satan). It is

important, though, to see in Revelation 12:11 that God’s victory ultimately comes by

Jesus’ death and the testimony of his followers. The power of God’s truth gives us

confidence in the face of evil on earth, even in the face of our own death.

Note: This bulletin is available electronically on the worship menu of the Grace web site.

Gathering

Prelude

The assembly stands.

Confession and Forgiveness The assembly faces the baptismal font. All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins.

Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God,

the strength of our ancestors, the host of this meal,

the builder of the city that is to come.

Amen.

If we have died with Christ, we will also live with Christ.

Let us confess our sin to the one who is faithful.

Silence is kept for reflection.

God our helper,

we confess the many ways

we have failed to live as your disciples.

We have not finished what we began.

We have feasted with friends but ignored strangers.

We have been captivated by our possessions.

Lift our burdens, gracious God.

Refresh our hearts and forgive our sin.

Raise us to the new life you have chosen for us

in Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

There is rejoicing in heaven when sinners repent.

Put your trust in these promises:

God will never leave you or forsake you.

You who were lost have been found.

For the sake of ☩ Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven.

Rejoice with the angels at this good news.

Amen.

Gathering Hymn Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence ELW 490

Greeting The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God,

and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

And also with you.

Prayer of the Day Let us pray.

Everlasting God, you have wonderfully established the ministries of angels and mortals.

Mercifully grant that as Michael and the angels contend against the cosmic forces of evil,

so by your direction they may help and defend us here on earth, through your Son, Jesus

Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God whom we

worship and praise with angels and archangels and all the company of heaven, now and

forever.

Amen.

The assembly is seated.

Word

Children’s Sermon Pastor Chris Repp

First Reading Daniel 10:10-14 Daniel trembles in the presence of an angel. That angel tells the prophet about the good and terrible future when the dead will be resurrected and the archangel Michael will usher in the deliverance of the nation.

10A hand touched me and roused me to my hands and knees. 11He said to me,

“Daniel, greatly beloved, pay attention to the words that I am going to speak to you.

Stand on your feet, for I have now been sent to you.” So while he was speaking this word

to me, I stood up trembling. 12He said to me, “Do not fear, Daniel, for from the first day

that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God,

your words have been heard, and I have come because of your words. 13But the prince of

the kingdom of Persia opposed me twenty-one days. So Michael, one of the chief princes,

came to help me, and I left him there with the prince of the kingdom of Persia, 14and have

3

come to help you understand what is to happen to your people at the end of days. For

there is a further vision for those days.

12:1“At that time Michael, the great prince, the protector of your people, shall arise.

There shall be a time of anguish, such as has never occurred since nations first came into

existence. But at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone who is found written

in the book. 2Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to

everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. 3Those who are wise shall

shine like the brightness of the sky, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the

stars forever and ever.”

Word of God, word of life.

Thanks be to God. Psalmody Psalm 103:1-5, 20-22 1Bless the Lord, O my soul,

and all that is within me, bless God’s | holy name.

2Bless the Lord, O my soul,

and forget not all God’s benefits— 3who forgives all your sins

and heals all your diseases;

4who redeems your life from the grave

and crowns you with steadfast love and mercy; 5who satisfies your desires with good things

so that your youth is renewed like an eagle’s.

20Bless the Lord, you angels, you mighty ones who do God’s bidding,

who obey the voice of God’s word. 21Bless the Lord, all you hosts of God,

you servants who do God’s will.

22Bless the Lord, all you works of God, in all places where God rules;

bless the Lord, O my soul.

Second Reading Revelation 12:7-12

Armed with the power of God, Michael and the angels of God fight those armed with the power of evil, the devil and the devil’s angels. The “blood of the Lamb,” our crucified Lord Jesus, gives Michael the power to force the devil from a place in heaven. 7War broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels fought against the dragon. The dragon

and his angels fought back, 8but they were defeated, and there was no longer any place

Page 6: Michael and All Angels SundayRejoice with the angels at this good news. Amen. 2 Gathering Hymn Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence ELW 490 Greeting The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,

4

for them in heaven. 9The great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is

called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the

earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.

10Then I heard a loud voice in heaven, proclaiming,

“Now have come the salvation and the power

and the kingdom of our God

and the authority of his Messiah,

for the accuser of our comrades has been thrown down,

who accuses them day and night before our God.

11But they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb

and by the word of their testimony,

for they did not cling to life even in the face of death.

12Rejoice then, you heavens

and those who dwell in them!

But woe to the earth and the sea,

for the devil has come down to you

with great wrath,

because he knows that his time is short!”

Word of God, word of life.

Thanks be to God.

The assembly stands.

Gospel Luke 10:17-20

The missionary church (“the seventy-two”) is given magnificent power. Greater than this gift of power over the enemy, however, is the gift of salvation: their names are written in heaven.

The Holy Gospel, according to Luke, the 10th chapter.

Glory to you, O Lord. 17The seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, in your name even the demons submit to

us!” 18He said to them, “I watched Satan fall from heaven like a flash of lightning. 19See,

I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the

enemy; and nothing will hurt you. 20Nevertheless, do not rejoice at this, that the spirits

submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”

The Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, O Christ.

Hymn of the Day By All Your Saints v. 1,2, last ELW 420

Page 8: Michael and All Angels SundayRejoice with the angels at this good news. Amen. 2 Gathering Hymn Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence ELW 490 Greeting The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,

Apostles’ Creed With the whole church, let us confess our faith.

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried;

he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again;

he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father,

and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church,

the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,

the ☩ resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

Amen.

Prayers of Intercession Sustained and nurtured by our generous God, we gather as one to pray for the church, the

world, and all of God’s creation.

Each petition concludes:

… Lord, in your mercy,

hear our prayer.

The prayers conclude:

Assured by your promise to hear us, we lay our prayers before your throne of grace;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Peace The peace of Christ be with you always.

And also with you.

The people may greet one another with a sign of Christ’s peace, and may say, “Peace be with you,” or similar words. After the Peace, the assembly is seated.

Meal

Offering An offering is gathered for the mission of the church, including the care of those in need.

At this time, please fill out the Friendship Register and pass it to the person next to you if you have not already done so. When all have signed the Register, please return it to the center aisle for later collection.

Offertory

The assembly stands as the offering is brought forward.

Offering Prayer Let us pray.

God our provider,

we bring nothing into this world

and we can take nothing out of it.

Accept the gifts you have first given us,

which we bring to your table,

and with them the offering of our lives.

Nourish us now with the life that really is life,

revealed to us in Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

Amen.

Great Thanksgiving The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Page 10: Michael and All Angels SundayRejoice with the angels at this good news. Amen. 2 Gathering Hymn Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence ELW 490 Greeting The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,

3

It is indeed right, our duty and our joy,

that we should at all times and in all places

give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God,

through our Savior Jesus Christ;

who on this day overcame death and the grave,

and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life.

And so, with all the choirs of angels,

with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven,

we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

THANKSGIVING AT THE TABLE Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord,

heaven and earth are full of your glory.

In great love you sent to us Jesus, your Son,

who reached out to heal the sick and suffering,

who preached good news to the poor,

and who, on the cross, opened his arms to all.

Page 11: Michael and All Angels SundayRejoice with the angels at this good news. Amen. 2 Gathering Hymn Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence ELW 490 Greeting The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,

In the night in which he was betrayed,

our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;

broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:

Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.

Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks,

and gave it for all to drink, saying:

This cup is the new covenant in my blood,

shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin.

Do this for the remembrance of me.

Remembering, therefore, his death, resurrection, and ascension,

we await his coming in glory.

Pour out upon us the Spirit of your love, O Lord,

and unite the wills of all who share this heavenly food,

the body and blood of Jesus Christ, our Lord;

to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit,

be all honor and glory, now and forever.

Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be

done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we

forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from

evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

The gifts of God for the people of God.

Thanks be to God.

The assembly is seated.

Communion We believe that Christ is truly present for us in the bread and wine of Holy Communion, forming us into his body for the sake of the world. We welcome to the Lord’s table all baptized Christians. Those who are not baptized we invite to explore with us the Christian faith and consider baptism. Those who do not commune are invited to come forward to receive a blessing. Please hold this bulletin in your hands as a sign to the pastor that you would like a blessing. To receive communion, please join the line on your side of the aisle and proceed to the pastor. (Note: gluten-free, dairy-free, wheat-free wafers are available. Just ask the pastor.) To receive wine, take an empty glass from the acolyte and proceed to a deacon with a pouring chalice. (Pre-poured glasses of grape juice are also available from the acolytes). Place your used glass in the basket provided near the stairs on the side you leave. Please notify an usher if you need to have communion brought to you in your seat.
