DESCRIPTION

Mallorca’s worldwide potential as a tourist resort is already well known. Its situation in the heart of the Mediterranean, its wide selection of hotels and ancillary services and the high quality of the professionals in this sector have made this an unquestionable fact. This same infrastructure has now been adapted to comply with the highest standards in other tourism segments, such as MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions & Events), soon to be reinforced with the opening of Palma’s Congress Hall (Palacio de Congresos de Palma), which is due to be finished at the beginning of 2011. Mallorca is much more than sun and beach and the Mice Mallorca Annual Guide aims to demonstrate this by providing a detailed overview of what the island has to offer the more than 5000 meeting planners who make up our own data base.

On behalf of the Ministry of Tourism of the Balearic Islands Autonomous Government, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome the initiative of the Mice Mallorca Annual Guide, a project which will finally materialise this year, following several months of investigation and development, in order to situate Majorca as a MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions & Events) destination in Europe, by means of direct distribution and active promotion amongst professional events organisers. This first edition of the annual directory, which we hope will attract growing support and development in the future, serves to reinforce what the Ministry of Tourism and Ibatur have been explaining in our new Marketing Plan: that the Balearic Islands, and, in this particular case, Majorca, are much more than simply “sun, sea and sand” and, therefore, it is essential to give those markets and segments which enable us to commercialise our destination, the attention they deserve, thereby opening up a wide range of possibilities and thus contributing to improve the results that will eventually put our Autonomous Region in a better position, both financially and socially. For this reason, we are grateful for all those projects such as this one, that result from private initiative and which help to achieve a decline in seasonal variation in tourism so that we will gradually be able to see an increase in the number of establishments that open during low season, thereby improving annual results and increasing the number of jobs. Furthermore, by giving Majorca greater prestige as a brand, this will then be able to diversify, thus multiplying business opportunities.Together with the development of segments such as MICE, in this case we also add one of our main objectives which is to increase the average amount that our visitors spend and, in order to achieve this, as you know, both private companies and public institutions are making a great effort to make investments which will improve and modernise our hotels and ancillary services. Finally, I would also like to congratulate those businessmen and women who, in one way or another, have shown their faith in this initiative by demonstrating an open mind with regard to change and an improvement in our tourism product.

Congratulations

Miquel Nadal

It is a pleasure to be able to greet event organisers from all over Europe, as well as MICE Mallorca clients (current and future) who have received a copy of this directory. This initiative arose as part of a strategy, the main aim of which is to promote

the infinite possibilities that Mallorca offers for accommodating all kinds of groups, especially bearing in mind that our island is fully conversed in the needs of clients, due to its experience and an infrastructure and know-how difficult to beat, all of which relate to a destination that, until now, has been mainly known for its vacational facet. Without a doubt, Mallorca has all the necessary ingredients to become a MICE leader in Europe. Its proximity to the main European capital cities, good connections by air, its mild all year round climate, the Mediterranean Sea, a deep-rooted culture, which has preserved the key to a way of life that respects the environment, Mallorca is proud of its heritage and combines all this with a determination to prosper as a business, offering products and services designed to satisfy the most demanding clientele.Today, Mallorca has an excellent variety of establishments, highly suitable for the organisation of all kinds of events and in our directory, our portal www.micemallorca.com and the workshop which will take place at the beginning of November 2009 (and which will be repeated every year), we wish to introduce them to the large number of meeting planners throughout Europe, whom we are going to approach personally. We would like to thank all those people, business associations, and institutions who have supported this initiative, for having understood that it forms part of a necessary strategy to diversify our offer as a destination. We are fully aware that the “sun, sea and sand” concept remains and will continue to be of vital importance to the Balearic economy but there are also other segments, such as MICE, which require greater support in order to increase the diversification of Mallorca and which cannot help but improve our current position as a leading tourist destination.MICE MALLORCA ANNUAL GUIDE will be back next year and we are sure that in our second edition, we will have considerably increased the opportunities that Mallorca has to offer. Nevertheless, we would like to thank all those who have supported this initiative in such a difficult year. Our thanks to you all.

Mice Mallorca: Thank you very much for agreeing to meet us. We wish other entities would have shown the same interest. To go straight to the point, do you think that enough is being done to sell Majorca with all its potential, or should the current per-ception that the market has of the island be changed? In other words, do you think that the traditional “sun and sand” model has finally run its course?Aurelio vázquez: Without a doubt, Majorca is a great product but we have to realise that it is totally necessary to diversify the offer. More and more activities are being geared towards the summer months and this is unwise. More alternatives need to be found, new focuses, new formulas and ways of viewing the product, of globalising it and integrating it into compartments. We should be seeking alternative products to the conventional ones. We have a great infrastructure but we haven’t yet found the right way to make it profitable.MM: What role can MICE play in this new approach?Av: With MICE, we are looking at a very interesting segment due to the economic effect that it will have on the destinations, not only with regard to the time of year involved, but also the spending tendencies of this type of client.MM: One of the things that surprised us when we carried out our market study prior to the launching of our directory, was what we perceived as a kind of “conformism” from some hoteliers who seem to take it for granted that their establishments will be closed for part of the year. We also observed a tendency to prolong the periods of closure, instead of seeking to reduce them. What is your opinion in this respect?Av: My point of view is that this tendency comes from a mentality very much focused on the “sun and sand” concept. This segment is concentrating its activities more and more on the summer months in the middle of the high season, due to a lack of profita-bility. The businessman or woman who works with an “exclusively sun and sand pro-fitability” is taking decisions in that direction because the market is pushing them and forcing them to do so. As a destination, what we should do is to seek alternatives in order to make good use of the infrastructures that we already have (with very important assets and investments). We should unite, in order to take greater social-economic advantage of both public and private infrastructures.MM: The question now is what should we do about it?Av: Exactly. We should ask ourselves: what should we do? We already know that “sun and sand” is not the only possibility and certainly not if we want to work in the low sea-son and the beginning of the season, because it is becoming more and more difficult to attract clients at those times of the year. I believe that we should seek commercial alternatives, both in means of commercialisation, as well as in means of defining the products that we are selling.MM: We have spent more than two years preparing our MICE Mallorca Annual Guide for the market, yet we are surprised that at this stage, and even earlier, there has been no similar institutional incentive. Av: Nevertheless, we are beginning to see actions being taken in the same direction. Institutionally, and, more specifically, in tourism, Baleares as a product is currently in a moment of confusion and change. I can understand the differences between each island and that they should all be treated differently. Also, each one works with different feeder markets. However, there is a certain transversal aspect lacking in the promotional activities. I am referring to the way in which not only businessmen and women in the sector, but also institutions, are generally tackling the problems which

INTERvIEw

As Managing Director of Iberostar

España and Chairman of the balearic

Association of Hotel Chains, Aurelio

Vázquez is certainly a very busy man.

Perhaps this is the reason why he

is able to comment these matters

concisely and with total honesty.

During this interview we were able to

discuss some of the questions that may

determine the future of tourism in our

islands.

are affecting the Balearic tourism market. As far as I am concerned, it is a question of perception: in the tourist industry over here, it seems that everything has to take care of itself. We think that as we have always clearly been number one, we will continue to be so and we are not realising that the situation has changed. We are working along the same lines as 15 years ago and they are not now applica-ble to the current market situation. It is very difficult to understand why we are only spending 28M Euros on promoting a sector that has an annual turnover of more than 600M Euros. At the same time, other destinations which are our competitors are being very well promoted and the level of technology in this respect has grown considerably. There have also been changes in the type of demand, the consumer and the rules of commercialisation and we should be responding to this challenge with the same intensity and in the same direction. What was good enough 10-15 years ago, the way of working and of seeing things, is not enough nowadays, at least with regard to many of the actions that need to be taken in our field.MM: What do you consider are the advantages of the MICE segment? Av: The main advantage is seasonal adjustment, something which we talk about a great deal but to which we do not dedicate sufficient, nor adequate resources. Fur-thermore, and basing our experience on other markets, the MICE segment works with higher average rates, thereby contributing to increase the profitability of the hotels. Finally, I should point out that this is a segment that not only provides work for hoteliers but also transport companies, restaurants, bars, organisers, etc. and it is precisely those which we define as ancillary services, which are the ones that benefit most from groups.MM: Which destinations should we consider as Mallorca’s strongest competitors?Av: All of them! There are lots: the list is really very long. Nowadays any destination in the Mediterranean area is a competitor and we also have to bear in mind something that is easily forgotten, the national city destinations, some of which are making an enormous effort to position themselves within the congresses and conventions seg-ment. I think that we have very fierce competitors in this segment of the market but, at the same time, we have an excellent product with which to challenge them.MM: Which are the main MICE feeder markets that we should be considering? Av: As far as the feeder markets are concerned, I always divide them into three groups. Firstly, we have the large national accounts: the traditional ones, which we have always looked after well and which provide the main part of the island’s business: the British and the Germans, not forgetting of course the national market. On the other hand, we have France and Italy, our closest neighbours but ones who, until now, have not been great fans of Balearic tourism, despite their proximity, size and importance. The third group comprises those that are usually defined as the “middle class”: countries, to which we should pay more attention than we have done in the past: Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria and, of course, Sweden and the other Scandinavian countries. It is important to point out that this group is being less affected by the global crisis and that makes them especially interesting in the short term. Finally, we have Russia, one of the great MICE potentials on a worldwide scale, although greatly affected by the crisis, and the East European countries to which an important part of European in-dustry has gravitated during recent years, converting them into a priority for the MICE segment in the mid/long term.MM: Thank you for your time and explanations of these concepts. We hope that some of your suggestions will be put into practice in the near future.Av: I wish you every success. Yours is a very interesting initiative and one which we will follow with interest.

We should take more social-economic advantageof both public and private infrastructures”

Aurelio vázquez“

Page 8: Mice Mallorca Annual Guide 2010 Eng

MICE Mallorca: What is you general impression about the touristic development in the balearics?

Tom Jenkins: Spain, and especially the balearics, has enjoyed fifty years of being Europe’s principal beach destination. Normally we would expect such a track record to convert itself readily into being a conference destination. This has happened throughout Europe: towns develop a tourism infrastructure on the basis of leisure demand, and then use it to facilitate business meetings. but Spain – until now – has been careful to stick with what it has always done and done well, which is cater for plane loads of warmth seeking northern Europeans.

MM: So who is ahead of us?

TJ: Any meeting planner in Europe knows Malta. Tunisia, Morrocco, Croatia hold proportionally more events yearly than Spain. Hotels in Germany or the South of Italy have got over 20% of their yearly turnover out of MICE. The Greek Islands are Europe’s Nr. 1 destination for Incentives. Apart from barcelona, Spain is not relevant as a MICE destination.

MM: You named it: what is MICE?

TJ: It stands for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Events. It’s a really common US description for the market segment which has always been named as Groups in Europe. but slowly the MICE concept is also being used here. I still can’t believe that you guys were able to register it as a brand in Spain!

MM: Are there different types of MICE?

TJ: As the name implies there are several sub segments, which might vary depending on the destination as well as on the planner.

MM: Any trends in MICE? Which is according to you the future of European MICE?

INTERvIEw

Tom Jenkins is Executive Director of ETOA (European Tour Operators Association), where he has been for over ten years. He was previously in charge of opera-

tions at American Express.

TJ: There is no crystal ball, but I do feel that companies will increasingly look for value: this is a trend which was happening before the current “crunch”, now the economic situation is going to accentuate companies hunting for bargains. The phenomenon whereby clients were prepared to pay more simply because they were “business customers” is going to disappear. The notion of a business tariff on the airlines has been eroded, and it is starting to occur with hotel bookings as well. So the MICE market may becoming a LOT more competitive and interesting very quickly.

MM: If you were to promote Mallorca as a MICE destination where you would start?

TJ: I think the way MICE MEDIA has planned the promotion is the right thing to do. First step is to get meeting planners to know the destination, how to get there, what it can offer. Preparing an annual guide is a very good start-up option. The other thing you need to do is get Palma on the map as a City destination, rather than just as a gateway to a beach holiday. barcelona has become important for MICE because people want to go there: Palma has to achieve the same level of desirability.

MM: Is this something ETOA is actively involved in?

TJ: Well ETOA is traditionally interested in leisure travel rather than MICE. One of our roles (beyond lobbying) has been to introduce suppliers to tour operators. but increasing the “desirability” of a destination is something we are very interested in and that is why we are involved with the City break show.

MM: Thank you vey much, Tom. It’s been a pleasure talking to you.

TJ: The pleasure is mine. best of luck for the future. I’m confident of the success of MICE MEDIA.

Will MICE change our lifes?Tom Jenkins

Mallorca is, and has been throughout its history, one of the main tourist resorts in the Mediterranean. The reason for this is due to its beautiful countryside, its

hidden natural treasures, its mild Mediterranean climate, together with a culture steeped in tradition and much, much more.

Mallorca: To cut a long story shortby José villalonga, historian

Page 10: Mice Mallorca Annual Guide 2010 Eng

Mallorca: to cut a long story short

All these factors have attracted, as far back as the 19th Century, the cultured and the curious, all of whom found what they were seeking on their visits to the island. Today, well into the 21st Century, its ability to adapt to market demand, as well as the search for new horizons, has enabled the island to continue attracting millions of visitors throughout the year.

The first visitors to the island wrote volumes about the wonders that have been preserved here since time immemorial. They were attracted by architectonic jewels such as the 13th century gothic cathedral, bellver Castle and its imposing situation, the Carthusian monastery of Valldemossa, an old convent which has been converted into a museum, the old houses of the nobility and bourgeoisie, or the farms or “possessions” (estates) with their sober, monumental architecture.

As well as the human influence on the landscape, the countryside itself has also attracted many visitors: geological treasures such as the Caves of Drach (which has been a tourist attraction since 1878), the sheer Tramontana mountains with the little villages surrounding

them, the wide, sandy beaches or the calm waters of the Mediterranean Sea, also played their part in welcoming tourists.

Famous people such as the illustrious Jovellanos, the composer Chopin and the writer George Sand have left their mark with some of their works, which explain in detail the island’s characteristics, its customs and its people.

However, the person to whom the island of Majorca owes its greatest debt is the Archduke Luis Salvador, one of the sons of Leopold II, Grand Duke of Tuscany. Since his first visit to Majorca in 1867, his relationship with the island became deeper and deeper until he became like a Majorcan himself. He also left written testimony of his visits in numerous works, accompanied by engravings and paintings which show the main wonders and treasures of Majorca and the rest of the balearic Islands.

The arrival of inquisitive travellers and visitors heralded the beginning of a fundamental element for any tourist destination: hotels. The first hotels to be built on the island were characterised by their elegance, comfort and their

situation in incomparable settings. The Miramar Hotel in the Port of Pollensa, the Maricel on the Cala Mayor coast, or the Gran Hotel, situated in Palma city centre, are just some examples of this initial style of tourism.

Some of the most famous people of our time have stayed in these hotels: actors, writers, musicians… the list is never-ending but some of the most well-known are the actor and actress, Errol Flynn and Ava Gardner, artists, such as Santiago Rossiñol, writers, such as Agatha Christie, not to mention numerous members of European royal families, who have been seen around the island.

From the 1960s, a change began to be seen in the style of tourism with the introduction of mass tourism, seeking sun and sand. This was the beginning of the tourist boom, which resulted in a large number of visitors, attracted mainly by the climate and the numerous pretty beaches. The hotels multiplied and the destinations widened their limits to include the city of Palma, Alcudia, Pollensa, Llucmayor…

Page 11: Mice Mallorca Annual Guide 2010 Eng

Mallorca: to cut a long story short

Since the 1990s, the situation has changed considerably. The explosion of new tourist resorts in the eastern Mediterranean countries, or the Caribbean, implying increased competition, necessitated a reconversion of the style of tourism by means of readapting the existing formula and the creation of new ways of more sustainable development.

As a result, old farmhouses have been reconverted into small rural hotels, which perfectly combine the comfort of the place with its original character. Another way of converting these rural houses, or “possessions” has been to transform them into places for celebrating all kinds of events, taking advantage of the incomparable setting in which they are normally located.

The number of city hotels has also increased considerably, enabling visitors to get to know the city of Palma and the culture and traditions of the city’s residents. These new, modern hotels have also been built with the aim of enhancing the offer of congress tourism, while fully integrating the idiosyncrasies of the city.

This type of tourism has also attracted business initiatives. Many businesses have sprung up to take advantage of the island’s resources which make visitors’ stays more enjoyable, such as various activities relating to nature, culture, tradition, sports…

The regional authorities have strongly encouraged this reconversion process, both through close collaboration with businesspeople, or by their involvement in the changes that are being developed. A clear example of their interest is the construction of the new Congress Hall, which will be a flagship enterprise in the Mediterranean area.

but Majorca also offers endless possibilities for the organisation of events in unusual settings, such as churches, grottos, beaches, mansions, ports, terraces, museums, libraries, schools, stations, warehouses, old factories, etc.

Today, Majorca has everything necessary to make it the leading destination in the Mediterranean for groups,

conventions, incentives and even medium-sized conventions, and those of a certain category who seek to avoid conventionalism and prefer a touch of creativity.

Having already missed the “first generation MICE”, which has been captured by other Mediterranean destinations, and which is the most traditional, being held in auditoriums, conventional congress halls and meeting rooms in large hotels, the Majorcan tourist industry should concentrate on exploiting this type of scenario as much as possible, yet in a consequential, orderly way, in order to offer meeting planners a top class destination, based on experience, professionalism, originality and, above all, quality, avoiding the traditional products, which can only be profitable if competitive prices are offered.

Page 12: Mice Mallorca Annual Guide 2010 Eng

What we meanwhen we talk of MICE

And we are not referring to Steinbeck’s famous story (Of Mice and Men)

by Dr. MICE

ilustration: gabibeltran.com

Page 13: Mice Mallorca Annual Guide 2010 Eng

¿what is MICE?“MICE” is an acronym, which is used internationally in the tourist

industry and is based on the initials of the English words “Meetings

Incentives, Conventions and Events. It also has its humorous side,

as the word is also synonymous with the plural of MOUSE: a lightly

ironic way of describing a group of events and one which unjustly

implies a lack of seriousness.

Although the name MICE is used in Spain, it is more commonly

known worldwide as G&C (Groups and Congresses), CCI or C+C, or

simply Groups. In my opinion, this last word is the most simple, as

well as being the one that most clearly defines the services to which

we refer. It covers any trip (usually organised by professionals) for

whatever kind of group.

¿why MICE?

The reasons why MICE are especially interesting for the hotel,

restaurant and ancillary services sector are so obvious that the

treatment that this segment has received in Spain in the past and,

in some cases, even today, seems incredible.

These groups contribute to seasonal adjustment, as they are not

so connected (indeed, sometimes quite the opposite) to the tourist

seasons, as is FIT tourism or traditional holidaymakers.

Groups generate more income. Indeed, there are some destina-

tions, for example, the United States, where hotels rooms are pri-

ced at higher rates per person for groups than for individual clients!

Putting aside these extremes, it is true that groups, and more spe-

cifically, business groups, spend more in hotels, restaurants, etc.

Also, the fact that these expenses are covered by the company, or

organisation, encourages these clients to spend more.

Although the “experts” would have us believe otherwise, groups

usually constitute the basis of the occupancies of many hotels,

which later increase their rates for individual clients, once they have

achieved their minimum numbers. We only have to look at examples

of establishments that are used to working with series (groups that

repeat periodically). Good Revenue Managers are truly enamoured

of MICE, because if they treat this segment properly, they can achie-

ve considerable improvements in average room rates.

MICE tourism, on the whole, generates a much lower ratio (and infi-

nitely more justified when the case arises) of complaints and claims.

Groups tend to be more conformist and grateful.

Furthermore, as far as business and multinational company groups

are concerned, the mere fact that a tourist brand or establishment

works with MICE clientele, helps to position them in the market and

enables them to achieve more international awareness. The busi-

ness clients of today may be the holidaymakers of tomorrow.

How many MICE?

Although the percentage varies, depending on the interests of the

operating establishment, or company in question, depending on

whether its situation is city-based, rural or resort and depending

on its specific characteristics, according to experts the MICE seg-

ment should account for between 20 and 25% of their total income.

This percentage is, today, higher on the American continent than

in Europe, although the difference tends to diminish as time goes

by. Each owner, Sales Director or Sales Manager should carefully

analyse the characteristics of their establishment, its surroundings

and the area in general, and, consequently, plan their MICE objec-

tives on a short, mid and long term basis. This will, without a doubt

facilitate the achievement of the same, which will result in a more

profitable segment.

where do MICE travel?

This is the million-dollar question and maybe the most important

of those that concern us. In the first instance, meeting planners

travel all over the world to any place where they can plan their event

easily and in an easily accessible destination which meets a series

of minimum requirements. BUT… there are many more factors to

be taken into consideration, which vary, according to the characte-

ristics of each group: price, accessibility, availability of technological

and logistic equipment, ancillary services, climate, etc. Despite what

we tend to believe, price is not one of the three main factors taken

into consideration when taking decisions.

who moves MICE?

In the past, the most simple and effective way of contracting MICE

was to contact the most important business travel consortiums

(American Express, Lufthansa Citycenter, Carlson-Wagonlit, TQ3,

Martiz, PGI, etc). However, today, due to the delocalisation of the

decision-makers of these consortiums, the constant increase in in-

dependent meeting planners, the increase in implants in compa-

nies and the fact that more and more travel agencies are organising

groups, in addition to their normal business of package holidays,

it is very difficult to pinpoint a single source of origin for groups.

Furthermore, even traditional tour operators and large online travel

agencies now have their own MICE departments, in order to try to

capture part of this ever-growing segment. The best way to develop

and increase MICE is to cooperate personally with meeting planners

and ensure an excellent promotion.

Page 14: Mice Mallorca Annual Guide 2010 Eng

MICE Mallorca’s aim is to bring the worldof MICE to the attention of Majorcan business people, thereby helping them to bring more groups, congresses and events to the

The island’s landscape is marked with bays, beaches and cliffs on the coast, whilst the interior is characterised by typical Mallorcan villages and mountains reaching heights of 1.500 meters. A wealth of beautiful scenery and culture with 383.107 inhabitants, invites visitors to explore every inch of the island and to discover the island’s gastronomy.

HERITAGEIn times gone by, the island was coveted by Romans, Arabs and pirates. It was the Catalonian monarch, James I, who ended the Mediterranean island’s Muslim rule in the 13th century and to whom we owe Palma’s most important buildings. The old quarter was built behind the ancient city walls, which repelled pirates and corsairs, and set in the bay which is named after the city. Ancient churches, palaces and mansions depict a past marked by prosperity. Opposite the Cathedral is the Almudena Palace, which was previously an Arabian palace and residence of the Mallorcan monarchs but has now been converted into a museum.Following the path of the Passeig Sagrera, we arrive at the Es Baluard museum of modern art, with a collection of works featuring the most significant international tendencies from the end of the 19th century to modern day. This centre also exhibits the works of artists such as Cézanne, Gauguin, Picasso, Tàpies, Kiefer and Barceló, amongst others.Crossing the Plaza Major, we walk through the old quarter, visiting the Plaça de Cort, the Council Offices, the Palau Vivot and the church of Santa Eulalia. The baroque structure of the town hall, commonly known as Cort, was previously a 16th century hospital. Two kilometres from the centre of Palma, we come to Bellver Castle, situated on a tree-covered hill overlooking the bay. Its name comes from the old Catalonian words bell veer, meaning

“beautiful view”. These are some of the places not to be missed. Fishing boats, pine groves and palm trees surround the most beautiful monuments.

CULTURE AND FIESTASApart from the being a typical Sun and Sand destination, Palma has many other facets. Culturally, it has a wealth of art galleries and museums, such as the Pilar Miró Foundation, the Joan March Foundation, the Bartomeu March Foundation, the Barceló Foundation, the Casal Solleric, the La Caixa Foundation in the Gran Hotel and the Es Baluard Museum of Con-temporary Art, amongst others.Palma is also known for its fiestas. One of the most popular is San Sebastian, which is held on the 20th January. San Sebastian is the city’s patron saint and bonfires (Foguerons) are traditionally lit in all the streets of the city centre to toast bread and sausages.

CONGRESSESPalma is the ideal place to hold congresses and conventions, with ample experience in this type of events, perfect infras-tructures and providing a setting full of attractions which, year after year, enable it to host all the most important national and international gatherings. Our most significant congress and convention centres are:Auditórium de Palma: Right on Palma’s Paseo Maritimo promenade, where all the city’s best Hotels, restaurants and bars are located. Well connected with Son Sant Joan Airport. The staff have years of experience in organising conventions and congresses. Can Domengece Technological Centre: Multipurpose area covering over 2000 m2, situated in Soldat Arrom Quart Road in

The capital of Mallorca and the island’s main city, covering a total area of 3.600 sq. kilometres, Palma offers a combination of landscapes, architecture, services and, at the same time, the tranquillity of its lovely coasts. It has a beautiful old quarter, profoundly influenced by its historic past.

GASTRONOMYBalearic cuisine may be enjoyed at the variety of restaurants located all over the city of Palma. dishes which should not be missed. Game, fish, seafood, fruit and vegetables all reflect the island’s varied gastronomy and for dessert, nothing more deli-cious than an ensaimada and one of the typical liqueurs that are distilled locally (palo, gin or hierbas).

SPORTSPalma’s fantastic climate enables the city to offer a wide variety of sports for outdoor enthusiasts: cycling, scuba-diving, sailing, golf...Palma has also developed a great infrastructure for organising sporting events, thanks to one of the most important events which was held in 1999, The Uni-versiada, for which the new Son Moix football stadium was built. This evolution continues today with two of the most important sailing com-petitions, The King’s Cup and the Princess Sofía Trophy. The latest and most important building to be constructed is the Palma Arena, one of the largest cycle tracks in the world, which was built to hold the World Indoor Cycling Championship.

COMMERCE AND LEISUREPalma has become a true shopping centre. The avenues and streets of the city’s old quarter (Oms, Via Sindicat, Sant Miquel), are home to a variety of establishments offering a wide selection of articles, from the typical leather and footwear to outlet products and top class brands.A wide variety of restaurants, theatres, cocktail bars and discotheques com-plete the capital’s attractions and Palma has several leisure centres such as La Lonja, Bahía de Palma and Porto Pi, where nightlife and tourism go hand in hand.

As well as contradicting, with his generous portions, the idea that nouvelle cuisine is synonymous with tiny rations, and featuring in the place of honour that distinguishes the best chefs on the island in all the gastronomic guides edited, Joan Torrens is also well known due to the fact that he comes from a family which has earned its prestige from the many years that they have run the Celler Ca’n Amer, in Inca. His parents, Antonia Cantallops and Pep Torrens are, in their own right, well known amongst the famous personages of Mallorcan haute cuisine. It was from these auspicious beginnings that Joan began his own personal career, combining the wisdom that he had learnt with a passion for investigation, which has led him to create dishes that are simply astonishing. All these ingredients: tireless work, perfection, tradition and innovation, are brought together in Es Baulard’s catering service, which few others in Mallorca can match. Carefully prepared menus, truly luxurious presentation and a highly professional service, while at the same time offering excellent value for money.A choice which will guarantee a delicious personalised menu, adapted to suit the occasion, as well as the assurance that comes from an excellent selection of wines and the certainty that everything will turn out perfectly on the day of the event.Es Baluard has catered for numerous companies and private events and has all the necessary infrastructure and professionalism to cope with any number of guests at any venue.

UNIQUE DESTINATION Alcudia is a privileged area in the Mediterranean. Its nature reserves are one of its most important tourist attractions and this small peninsula offers a unique landscape: sandy beaches, bays, mountains, marshes…… all set against the background of the deep blue Mediterranean Sea. Its mild, all year round climate makes Alcudia the ideal place for practising innumerable outdoor sports and leisure activities.

LOCAL ECOTOURISM

As far back as 1992, Alcudia was already a pioneer destination, dedicated to the protection of the environment with its declaration of Local Ecotourism. Over the years, a constant effort has been maintained to create harmony between progress and the environment and to ensure sustainability of natural resources. Year after year, the hotels and restau-rants that have adhered to this philosophy have intensified their determination to achieve it.

HERITAGEAs well as its natural beauty, this unique resort offers a wide variety of cultural resources and heritage. Its strategic position has attracted a variety of civilisations, whose legacy continues to characterise the area. The passing of the centuries has left a profound mark on the region, on its customs and its people, since prehistoric times up to the present day.

One of the most outstanding elements of its heritage is the Roman City of Pollentia, which is one of the archaeological jewels in the crown of the Balearic Islands. Built in the 1st Century BC by the Roman Consul, Quinto Cecilio Metelo, it still conserves important structures such as the theatre, forum and The Portella. Some of the items found in the archaeological excavations are exhibited at the Pollentia Monographic Museum. One of the most unique and representative features is the medieval city. Its original outline still exists and its impressive fortifications have withstood the test of time. It has a charm of its own that invites visitors to explore the hidden picturesque corners of this edification. The Yannick and Ben Jakober Foundation is a jewel located in a uniquely beautiful setting, offering art lovers the opportu-nity to enjoy a fantastic collection of portraits, as well as a splendid rose garden and a sculpture park, all well worth a visit.

CULTUREAlcudia oozes culture from every pore, conserving historical traditions and ancestral fiestas, yet at the same time inventing new cultural features to delight both residents and visitors. Various local fiestas and newly-created events are held throug-hout the year, enabling Alcudia to offer one of Majorca’s most attractive and varied cultural agendas.

NATURENature continues its uninterrupted reign in this part of Majorca. A large part of the territory comprises protected areas where interesting and peculiar local flora and fauna may be found. Its coasts, mountains and marshes make this whole

UNIQUE DESTINATION / MARINE RESERvEIn 2007 the area was declared the Llevant Marine Reserve. Special mention should be made of the quality of the beaches and facilities of the various resorts, for which, year after year, the blue flag is awarded.

HERITAGEThe town has a walled enclosure, ”El Castell”. which was built in the 14th century, in the interior of which is the governor’s house, currently offering a permanent exhibition of work made out of palm; there is also a small church with a very valuable carving of a 15th century crucifix. The parish church of Capdepera was built in the neo-classical style between 1829 and 1849. Next door is a country house, where all kinds of exhibitions are held. The Capdepera lighthouse is situated on top of a hill and provides a spectacular viewpoint of Cala Ratjada. The Cala Ratjada church was built in the 1950s and designed by Gabriel Alomar. In the direction of Canyamel, there is a well preserved, rectangular tower of Arabian origin, with various outhouses for animals.A visit to the spectacular Caves of Artá is a must, with their 30 m. high rooms and a 22 m. long stalagmite.Canyamel is the home of a pre-talayotic archaeological site, called “ Es Claper des Gegant”.

CULTURE, FIESTAS AND MARKETSVarious activities are held throughout the year to coincide with the different annual festivities, the most important of which are the Sant Antoni ,Sant Roc,Sant Bartomeu and Carmen fiestas. There is a theatre, which is used alternately as a cinema and for plays. The most important festival held there is the International Piano Festival, featuring leading pianists, but other music shows are also programmed, such as Cuban music, concerts, various exhibitions and the well-known “Serenates d’estiu”, which take place in July in the gardens of the March Palace. The prestigious medieval market, held in May is renowned, as it is held in the unique setting of an authentic 15th century castle in the old quarter of the town of Capdepera. Two markets are held each week throughout the year and a craft market is held at night during the months of May to October.Be sure to visit the gastronomic “Mostra de la Llampuga” fair in October. As from November, there will be a new Auditorium in Cala Ratjada, with exhibition halls, conference rooms and concert halls.

NATUREThe contrast between sea and mountain provides an alternative to the hubbub of the summer months,

Situated on the east coast of Majorca, visitors will be pleasantly surprised by the calm atmosphere. Covering an area of 54.000m2, the area retains the peaceful tranquillity of a seaport, with its quiet beaches and the majestic surrounding forests, making Cala Ratjada, Cala Gat, Capdepera, Canyamel, Cala Mesquida and Font de Sa Cala the ideal place for an enjoyable stay.

offering the possibility of enjoying spectacular landscapes that encourage all kinds of outdoor activities: rambling, cycle tours, horse-riding, sports such as golf, tennis and athletics, sailing…Cala Agula is surrounded by pine trees and a protected area of dunes. In Cala Mesquida, the conifers and pine trees suggest an air of somewhat wild beaches, with their own special charm. Font de Sa Cala is a beach at the end of a semicircular bay, very quiet and with a strong family atmosphere.Other beaches in the area are white sandy Cal Gat and Son Moll.Es puig de S´Aguila and Es puig des Telégrafo are clearly signposted for rambling and offer wonderful views from their peaks. Here is a sort of cape, partly surrounded by water and highly recommendable for excursions around the coast. As from 2007, the coastline here has been designated the Llevant Marine Reserve.

SPORTS AND THE PORTThere is a sports centre with an athletics track and football pitch and a public indoor swimming-pool will soon be added to the complex. There are also 90 clay tennis courts, as well as gymnasiums, skating rink, indoor rock-climbing gym and children’s playgrounds to provide more varied options, not forgetting the two golf courses.Horse-riding, diving schools, balloon and paratrike trips satisfy the appetite of the most adventurous. Ciutadella are connected by four daily ferries.Rambling, cycle tours and organised excursions are also available.

GASTRONOMYThis maritime area provides the best ingredients for fresh fish dishes. One of the main events here is the gastronomic Golden Mackerel fair, which is held every year and offers the opportunity to sample the tastiest recipes made from this delicacy. The somewhat mountainous terrain of the area is ideal for breeding livestock in small farms, which provide lamb and pork.

SHOPPING, LEISURE AND FREE TIMEThe shops in the area are many and varied and there are also all kinds of restaurants serving typical Majorcan fare, as well as international cuisine. The atmosphere on the terraces that line the promenade is cosmopolitan, with various different types of establishments. At night, the modern pubs, chill-outs, and rockers come to life and the evening finishes at any of the many discotheques which are open until the early hours of the morning.

ACCOMMODATIONThe hotel association has a web page offering a good selection of all kinds of establishments, depending on the tastes and possibilities of each potential client; from hostels to 5 star hotels. Another alternative is the rural hotel sector, a more relaxed and personalised option.

Son Servera, situated in the Levante region of Mallorca, between the Serra de Llevant mountains and the sea, offers a multitude of possibilities throughout the year. Cala Millor has a white sandy beach, three kilometres long, with calm, crystal clear water. However, there is also a wealth of infrastructures to enable visitors to practise all kinds of sport, from cycling to tennis, as well as many other activities. Cala Millor is also the main commercial centre in the area, where you can spend a day shopping and find all you could possibly need.Cala Bona is a small coastal village, famous for its fishing port, its small Mediterranean fishing boats and its restaurants and bars where visitors can soak up the atmosphere during the warm summer evenings. Costa de los Pinos in Costa de Sant Jordi is a mountain range which runs into the sea, where there are a multitude of bays such as Sa Marjal, or Es Rajoli, with perfect sandy beaches for those seeking quiet places to dive and discover the peaceful marine fauna of our coasts. Costa de los Pinos is famous both for its architecture and its residents, as many well-known artistes and business magnates have set up their summer residences in this area. The natural beauty of this coast, together with its exceptional climate, have led to one of the pioneer golf courses in Mallorca being installed here: the Son Servera Golf Club. The Pula Golf was also recently added. Son Servera is a village featuring traditional Mediterranean architecture and fragrances and characterised by its Saint John Square, housing the church

of the same name, with its fortress tower from the ancient estate of Fray Gari and the Església Nova, (New Church), an unfinished architectural work of art, designed by Joan Rubio, one of the architects who worked with Antonio Gaudi. If you look closely, you can see elements that coincide with the best of the modernism that characterised the work of this genial Catalonian architect. The uncovered central area of the Església Nova, is the scene of a multitude of activities that are organised during the summer, such as traditional Mallorcan dances “Sa Revetla”, that are held every Friday night, or the wonderful “Serenates” concerts that take place in the summer. Son Servera also holds a market every Friday morning, which is attended by a large number of both visitors and residents Special mention should be made of the history of the interior of this municipality, as walking through the countryside of Son Servera is the best way to discover historic estates – some of which have now been converted into rural Hotels – and old prehistoric settlements, such as Na Gatera.

Mild temperatures and a spectacular environment make Son Servera the ideal place to enjoy a multitude of outdoor activities, thus converting this town into a first class tourist attraction.

The traditions and customs of Son Servera, which are celebrated on special days, are also very interesting:Saint Anthony: 16th and 17th JanuarySaint Ignatius: 1st FebruaryClown Festival during the last week of April.Fiestas of Saint John: during the month of June.Fiestas of Carmen in Cala Bona during the month of JulyCala Millor Tourist Fiestas during the whole of the last week of September. The recently opened Cinema/Theatre La Unió, where exhibitions and cultural shows are held (theatre, dance, music, etc.), as well as small conferences and forums. We look forward to welcoming you to Son Servera.

The Sa Maniga Auditorium celebrated its 10th anniversary in June this year and was built in order to provide the area with a modern establishment suitable for cultural events, such as music, theatre, dancing and other artistic activities. Situated in Calla Millor on a 1600m2 plot, it has a Great Hall with 466 seats.

AUDITORIUM

Since its opening, cultural events, such as musicals and plays featuring well-known artistes, are often held in the auditorium. The auditorium was also built to provide the area with a suitable establishment for conventions, business meetings and congresses and to attract groups or incentives and is the result of a project designed to increase the social and economic potential of the area, as well as to promote its culture. As a congress centre, the Sa Maniga Auditorium offers specialised services (and for many years was the only establishment in the area to do so). It has several spacious areas for conventions or meetings, with an auditorium seating 466 people and 5 workrooms, each holding up to 60 people. Additional services such as simultaneous translation, or coffee breaks and bar service, are also available. Hotel accommodation in the area is ideal for a sector as demanding as this one and there are several four and five star establishments (Hotel Hipotels Hipocampo Palace 5*, Hotel Hipotels Flamenco 4*, Hotel Bahía del Este 4*...), offering excevllent value for money. It is also a centre that fulfils all the cultural needs of the area, with the aim of adjusting the tourist season and creating complimentary leisure opportunities, as well as increasing competitiveness and the quality of the residents’ lifestyle, while at the same time optimising the social use of the natural and cultural resources. The Sa Maniga Auditorium is one of the three best establishments of its kind in the Balearic Islands and its architectural beauty and quality make it especially outstanding, as well as a reference for future multicultural buildings.

Plenty of sunshine, fine, white sand, transparent blue waters, verdant landscapes, the main natural resources of Cala Millor are protected and unspoilt. A wide range of different types of accommodation and complimentary services offer comfortable, high quality holidays to the growing number of tourists visiting the area, resulting in a new style of tourist phenomenon within the high-class tourism sector.Amongst the most outstanding congresses and conventions held at the Auditorium are Ericsson, BMW, Mercedes Benz, Sony, Consorci Europeu Millenium, PSOE Congress, Balearic Urology Association, Sociedad Española de Atención al Usuario de la Sanidad (Spanish Society for Patient Assistance in the National Health Service), Youth Congress, 1 Jornadas de Cuidados Integrales a los Pacientes Ostomizados de las Illes Balears (1st Workshop for Integral Care of Stoma Patients in the Balearic Islands), Eurodendro Conference.

The Café del Sol is in Cala Millor, right on the beach, in a privileged location, where you can take in the spectacular views, while enjoying a typical Mediterranean evening.

CHILLOUT RESTAURANT

Try their delicious salads, tasty sandwiches and hamburgers and their suc-culent Italian pasta dishes, or exquisite, homemade pizzas, always accom-panied by those breathtaking views.

And in the evening, you can relax and listen to the Café del Sol music, while sipping one of their delicious cocktails, or choosing from their extensive menu of international brand whiskies, rum and vodka.

Right there, where the land meets the sea.

In a place where the wind is infused with the aroma of salt.

Where the shade and light awake with the Sun.

Right there … in the Café del Sol.

In Café del Sol  the toilets are open to the public and there are special facilities for the disabled, with showers in each cubicle.

Events may also be held for between 100 and 150 people, always provided that the occasion is planned in advance , in order to be able to offer the best service.

Magic, created by XISCU, predominates in the kitchen. His cuisine is very creative, always using the freshest local produce.

The Café del Sol’s capacity varies, but it has room for 200 people inside and a large outdoor terrace with chill-out areas in the gardens and fantastic views of the bay.

Music is another of their strong points. They have edited 3 Café del Sol CDs, which are now on the market, produced under the brand name Café del Sol Music and they have DJ sessions and groups playing (Chill-out, Flamenco-chill, Jazz, Soul) throughout the year.

For these and for many other reasons, the Café del Sol is the meeting point for everyone, both in summer and winter. Free Wi-Fi is available, as well as Internet (1€ - 20 minutes).

Son Amar opened in 1963, during the tourism “boom” This restaurant-show, which is set in a 16th century Mallorcan estate that belonged formerly to the Marquis of Raiguer, Don Juan Amar, is only 11 kms from the centre of Palma de Mallorca and 20Kms from Son San Juan Airport.

THE SHOWThe opening of Son Amar created a real revolution, presenting an idea that still lives on today: a fusion of local Mallorcan culture with the best national and international acts and the most up to date technology. For years, or rather, decades, no tourist’s visit to the island was complete without including dinner at Son Amar, followed by what has been considered by many artistes and professionals in the sector as one of the best shows in Europe. The results bear this out, as more than 15 million people have visited Son Amar since it first opened. The prime material used here is the key to its success: spacious installations holding more than 1500 people, a choice selection of national and international dancers, singers, comedians and the latest technological equipment exceeding 10.000 watts of sound and 500.000 watts of lighting, together with an excellent and varied gastronomy, all in the style of a Las Vegas show.

TOTAL CAPACITYSon Amar has a large number of rooms holding from 250 to 1800 people.

MEETING ROOMSSon Amar organises events, both large and small, to suit all tastes. Son Amar is able to offer all kinds of services, from a welcome with singers in the 16th century patio, to the most tasteful decorations, with torches, table centres and high quality crockery and glassware. They organise all kinds of events, from congresses and incentives to political rallies, and have a great technical team available to give the necessary

support for presentations, product launches, and other commercial events, commemorations, celebrations and award ceremonies. Their enthusiasm for promoting the island’s culture and local traditions has led Son Amar’s restaurant and show in Mallorca to restore its ancient tafona - a rustic house covering 350 square metres, ideal for holding meetings, banquets, weddings, or First Communions and holding up to 300 people. Without a doubt, Son Amar is the ideal place to celebrate any event.

CATERINGIn Son Amar it is the client who chooses the menu to be served at their event, from amongst a wide selection of products, and with live music. All this accompanied, if you wish, by the great Son Amar show, from which you may choose the acts most suitable for the occasion.Son Amar is able to cater for all kinds of gala dinners, (congress closures, incentive trips, conventions), presentations, launches, political rallies, award ceremonies, weddings, etc.

ADDITIONAL SERvICESAs well as photography, decoration, flowers and plants, hostesses, coach service, car hire, etc, Son Amar also has its own discotheque.

SITUATIONThe Son Amar estate is set amid almond and olive trees and surrounded by the Tramuntana mountains. The city of Palma is close by and Son San Joan Airport is only 20kms away.

HOTELS NEARbYThere are several hotels in the picturesque village of Sóller, which is only 15 minutes away by car, and numerous hotels in the city of Palma (also 15 mins by car).

GOLF SON TERMENS GOLF COURSE

The Golf Son Termens golf course was opened on the 11th May 1998 and is only 10 kms from Palma in the direction of Valldemossa, between S’Esglaieta and the Sóller road.Son Termens is probably the golf course most integrated into its natural surroundings in the whole of the Balearic Islands.
